1. INFINITY CO-EXTRUDED COMPOSITE DECKING

1.1 An Introduction to Bamboo-Plastic Composite

Wood-PlasticComposites(WPC)arecompositematerialsmadeofwoodfiber/woodflourandthermoplastic(s).WPCareproducedbythoroughlymixinggroundwoodparticlesandheatedthermoplasticresin.WPCmaybeproducedfromeithervirginorrecycledthermoplasticsincludingHDPE,LDPE,PVC,PP,ABS,PS,andPLA.Themostcommonmethodofproductionistoextrudethematerialintothedesiredshape.Thesematerialscanbemoldedwithorwithoutsimulatedwoodgraindetails.ExtrudedWPCareformedintobothsolidandhollowprofiles.Injectionmoldingisalsoused.

WPCarestillfairlynewmaterialsinthemarket,relativetothelonghistoryofnaturalwoodasabuildingmaterial.WPCwerefirstintroducedintothedeckingmarketintheearly1990’s.WPCareoneofthefastestgrowingbuildingproductmaterials.

1.2 What is Infinity Decking and What Are the Benefits?

2. TRANSPORTING FORTRESS INFINITY DECK BOARDS

2.1 Stacking

Thebestmethodofstackingisthepyramidmethodorbricklayersmethod.Byshiftingthelayersofboardshalfwayacrossaboard’slength,thechancesoftheboardsslidingapartarelowerandthereforesafer.

Thoughthepyramidmethodissaferforstoragepurposes,itisnotalwaysthemostpractical.Ifitisnecessarytostackboards,besurenottostackthemtoohigh.Makecertainthattheheightofthestackdoesnotexceedthewidthofthestack.

Whenstackingboardsfortransportation,pleasemakesurethattheboardsaresecure,andthatthereisanevendistributionofload.

2.2 On-site

EnsureInfinityDeckinghasacclimatedtotheenvironmentbeforeinstalling.Itisimportanttounderstandthatwheninstallingincolderweatherthatthecompositeboardswillexpandmorethanwheninstallinginhotterweatherandgappingshouldbeadjustedaccordingly.

Oncetheboardshavereachedthebuildingsite,ensurethattheyarestoredonlevelground.Itisrecommendedthattheboardsnotbestoreddirectlyonthegroundandthattheboardsarecovered.

Iftheboardsneedtobestoredforlongperiods,packtheboardsontopofpallets.

KeepinmindthestandardlengthofInfinitymaterials.Iftheprojectallows,tryworkwithstandardsizesof12’,16’and20’piecesinordertokeepcostsdownandreducewaste.

WhencalculatingtheamountofInfinityproductyourequire,remembertotakewasteintoaccount.10%wasteisagoodaveragetoworkwithforasquaredecks,andround/curveddeckswillhaveapproximately15-20%waste.However,pleasekeepinmindthatyouwillstillneedtocalculatethisasitcanvarydependingontheshapeanddesignofthedeck.

Whenplanningadeck,consideritasanextensiontotheoutdoorlivingarearatherthanjustanoutdoorfloor.Deckscanincorporatecomfort,funandinterestingelements.Youmaywanttosuggestafirepit,grill,pergola,sittingarea,diningareaetc.toyourclient.There are no limits to what is possible.

Combinationsofcolors,particularlyonaborderaroundthedeckoronthefasciawillhighlightandaccentadeck.Experiment,exploreandtrysomethingthatwillgivetheprojectthatWOWfactor.

YoucouldsuggestaddinglightingsuchasFortressAccents,eitherleadingtoand/oronthedeck.Downlights,spotlights,stairlights,anythingispossible.Lightingaddslife,looksimpressiveandbringsawonderfulambiencetothedeck.

Inspectandassessthegroundand/orsurfacebelowyourprojectsitebeforeinstallingInfinity.Thisshouldbeadryflatarea.ForunevensurfacesallowforsubstructurealterationstocreateanevenbaseforInfinityDecking.Thegroundshouldbewellcompacted.

Ensurethebuildingsiteallowssufficientdeckventilationanddrainage.Fornon-sleepersystem,planaminimumof2”elevationspacebetweenthegroundandthebottomofyourlowestjoistorbeams.

Forsleepersystems,deckingmustbeelevatedaminimumof1¼”abovetheground.

11. INSTALLATIONImportant! Please make sure that before you begin construction, you consult building requirements, codes and restrictions regarding spacing and load requirements for rails. All supporting structures and framing must comply with applicable building codes. All local building codes will supercede any recommendations, measurements or techniques in the following installation instructions.

If you have any questions or uncertainties, please contact Fortress Deck before beginning installation.

●Makesureyoupre-drillslightlysmallerholesthanthescrewshaftdiameterfortrimscrewsandensureallscrewsaresecure,butnotovertightenedduringinstallation.Thiswillhelppreventpressurecracksandmushrooming.

●Infinityprofilescontainplasticandwillexpandandcontractmoresothanwood.Theexpansionandcontractionoftheseprofilesmustbeconsideredwheninstalling.Sufficientexpansiongapsmustbeleftatbuttjointsaswellaswheretheprofilesmeetfixedobjects.Considertemperaturesattimeofinstallationforcontraction/expansionpurposes.TherateofexpansionofInfinityprofilesiscalculatedat0.025”or1/40”perfoot(¼”-⅜”onbothsidesofa20’board)overa50°Fswingintemperature.

●EnsureInfinityhasacclimatedtotheenvironmentbeforeinstalling.Itisimportanttounderstandthatwheninstallingincolderweatherthatthecompositeboardswillexpandmorethanwheninstallinginhotterweatherandgappingshouldbeadjustedaccordingly.

●Avoidpre-cuttingInfinity boards,asnoteveryconstructionwallisstraightandcutallFortressInfinityproductsslowlyusingasharpfinetoothbladetoavoidchipping.

●Thefirstboardiskeyinthelayingprocess!Ifitisafixeddeck,placethefirstplankflushwiththerimjoist-makesureitissquareorparallelwiththeexistingstructureorwithyourframe.

●Makesureyourstartingprofileissquareontheframeandlaidperfectlystraight,asallsubsequentplankswillfollowitsline.Makesureofthisbymeasuringedgesanddiagonals.

●Surfacemounttheboardtotherimjoistwiththepreferredoverhang.Dependingonthedesign,youcanhaveabiggeroverhang,butrememberyoucannoteveroverhangbymorethan2”.Aesthetically,itoftenlooksbetterwhenyouoverhangabout¼”-½”overthefascia.

●HULKHiddenClipcanbeusedwhenyouendflushwiththeframeandthereisnooverhang.

●FortressInfinityPostSleevesandModernRailsaremanufacturedforon-centerpostspacingtoaccommodate6’and8’railsections.ModernRailsaredesignedinslightlylongerspanstoaccountforslightvariationinpostplacementandcutendsduringangledrailapplications.NOTE: IT IS IMPORTANT TO MEASURE POST SPACING PRIOR TO MAKING ANY CUTS.

●Thinkaboutallowingyourdeckboardstooverhang(max1”)asopposedtousingtrimaroundtheedgesofthedeckboards.

●Alwayscrossover.Usethelengthoftheprofilesinthedirectionoftheshortersideofthedeck.

●Buildinboxes.Buildingaborderoftwoprofiles(breakerboard)aroundeachprofilelengthareawillpreventprofilesimpactingeachother head to toe and will control expansion.

●Wheninstallingfascia,pre-drillholesthatareslightlybiggerthanthescrewsinthefasciaonlybutnottheframetoensureproperconnectiontothedeckstructure.

●Whensurfacemountingdeckboards,pre-drillholesthatareslightlysmallerthanthediameterofthescrewshaft

Important! Do not sand Infinity Deck Boards

PleaseinsistthatyourclientunderstandInfinitycleaningandcareinstructions.Adeckshouldbecleanedwithahighpressurehoseseasonallyandkeptfreeofdebris.Adeckthatcollectsmoredebriswillneedtobecleanedmorefrequently.Do not let debris accumulate between boards.Foroptimumcleaningandlongevity,ahighpressurehoseshouldbeused. Use at pressures under 1500psiandatadistanceofatleast1¼”awayfromthesurfacewhenspraying.
