Colours of Christmas

Colours of Christmas

The colours most closely

associated with the Christmas season are: red, white and

green. Some say that this is because of

the red and green plants of

wintertime contrasting with the

white snow.

Page 13: рождество обычаи и традиции

Red

means love and reflects our warmth and

love for each other. It is also the colour that is

considered the greatest excitement. As a religious symbol it

stands for fire, blood, and charity.

Page 14: рождество обычаи и традиции

means hope and the eternal longing for spring and all the promises of the future. Green is the symbol of

nature, youth, and the hope of

eternal life.

Saturnalia was adopted by the Roman Christians and

became Christmas, celebrated on the 25th of December.

The Romans celebrated

Saturnalia in honor of the god Saturn.

It was supposed to be the period of chaos between the old and the new year when the normal rules of society could be ignored. People drank a lot, went wild and gave presents to each other.

The Candy Canes of Christmas

•Candy cane sweet treats made primarily from boiled sugar seem to have first appeared in Europe in the late 1600’s to early 1700’s.  They were made in many different colors (most often white) and shapes (most often straight sticks), evolving to the familiar cane or upside down J shape with the red and white stripes in the early 1900’s.
