Definition
The process of selecting , ordering, and receiving materials materials for library or archival collections
by purchase, exchange, or gift, which may include budgeting and negotiating with outside agencies, such as publishers, dealers, and vendors, to obtain
resources to meet the needs of the institution's users ,according to the library policy , in the most
economical manner
Acquisition Components
1- Building library collection(or holdings) :collecting a basic group of library holdings in different types ( books, theses, journals, audiovisuals, electronic resources ,etc)
2 -Developing library collections: promotion of library holdings according to the library policy & users interests.
3- Weeding library collections: taking away unused
holdings to make place for more usable materials.
