Beachway Therapy Center facilities are specifically designed to move our guests from the chaotic grips of addiction and alcoholism to the peaceful acceptance of recovery.

It is our mission to provide every client with the utmost care and offer the highest quality of treatment for those in need. While other centers treat clients like patients, we treat everyone in our program like guests in our home. By offering a high standard of quality services along with professional recovery support, we are able to provide guests with the assistance they need to get their lives back on track.

Each therapist at Beachway Therapy Center has a caseload of 4-8 clients. Overall, Beachway Therapy Center only accepts 54 clients at a time. This allows us to provide unsurpassed individual attention to each and every client. Beachway Therapy Center specifically designs each client’s treatment plan to meet his or her individual needs. By offering multiple weekly individual therapy sessions, a therapist is able to truly identify the core problems and provide clients with the time needed to effectively handle and move past their issues.

All therapists at Beachway Therapy Center are educated, trained and licensed to treat addiction, alcoholism and mental health. Beachway Therapy Center is a dual diagnosis capable facility. Dual Diagnosis is defined in this instance as “a primary of substance abuse and a secondary occurrence of a mental health disorder.” A treatment plan will be written for each client by his or her therapist. The client’s treatment plan will address, if applicable, both substance abuse and any mental health disorders.

Beachway Therapy Center believes in going beyond the minimum care standard set forth by most other treatment facilities and the State of Florida.

Every day, the facility offers addiction education and dual diagnosis therapy groups that cover a wide variety of subjects such as:

The Disease Concept Addresses the disease of addiction and how it affects the body, mind and spirit of a client.

Relapse Prevention Teaches a client about the triggers and signs that are common in relapsing and what to do to prevent personal relapse upon conclusion of treatment.

Family Dynamics The effects of addiction on the family are addressed and the role of addiction in the client’s family unit is highlighted.

Psychological Education Psych education is a well-established component of cognitive-behavioral therapy in adult patients.

Process Group Here, we focus on the establishment of trust. During this time, the group therapists and group members work towards establishing a level of trust that allows them to communicate openly and honestly. In a climate of trust, people feel free to care about and help each other. The client is provided with the skills to recognize certain emotions, and how to effectively act upon impulse and feelings of spontaneity.

12-Steps of Alcoholics AnonymousProvides the client with an introduction to the12-step approach and highlights the importance ofsponsorship.

Grief and Loss Many clients have lost someone or something important to them. The loss could be instrumental to the life and addiction of a client, and needs to be handled accordingly. Beachway Therapy Center teaches a client about the grief process and what to expect while grieving.

Codependency Clients learn that behaviors, thoughts, and feelings that go beyond normal kinds of self-sacrifice and caretaking can lead back to using. Clients learn how to gain independence from these behaviors.

Relationships Clients learn how to set healthy boundaries, build and strengthen relationships that have been damaged by their addiction.

Self-Esteem While in treatment, a client is taught about self-esteem. The client is given the skills and tools needed to build a positive and stronger sense of self-esteem.

Gender-Specific Groups Beachway Therapy Center’s therapists recognize that men and women recover differently, and that there is a definite need for gender-specific groups. In these gender-specific groups, men and women meet separately to discuss issues related to their recovery.

Caseload Therapeutic Process Groups Clients will have the opportunity to meet in small group settings with their individual therapists. These groups allow the client to discuss issues that may require intensive therapy or a group perspective.

Parenting Group A group for parents to discuss the issues common to parents in recovery and the consequences of their addiction on their children. Clients are given specific assignments related to parenting and are encouraged to share their assignments in group. They are also encouraged to discuss current issues and pertinent problems related to being a parent in recovery. ACOA issues are also a common topic of discussion, with a focus on how parents of alcoholics/addicts are oftentimes alcoholics/addicts themselves. The family nature of the disease is discussed, as well as codependency, relationship issues and co-parenting concerns. This group is usually quite small and intimate, affording a high level of honesty and support. Elizabeth Ossip, MSW, LCSW is certified in Triple P Parenting (Level 6) and incorporates this philosophy into the group setting, along with Beyond Consequences and other similar parenting programs.

Family Dynamics Group This group focuses on how each individual’s addiction has impacted his or her family system. The group’s activities include receiving “impact letters” from family members. The letters describe how the addiction has impacted the family members emotionally, financially, spiritually and within their interpersonal relationships. These impact letters are read in a psychodrama setting by establishing relationship dynamics prior to the readings. This approach allows for clients to see the impact their addiction has had on the people they love the most. This technique provides insight into patterns of behaviors and often challenges the idea that “My addiction only affects me.” These readings also allow family members to share openly and honestly with their loved ones in a therapeutic environment.

Coping Skills Groups These groups assist clients in developing new and healthy coping skills in preparation for the emotions they will experience in sobriety. Clients participate in a range of psycho-educational and experimental groups designed to engage and enlighten them to develop alternative skills to better handle emotional stress, anger, anxiety and fear. This groups allows each client to developing emotional tools and skills to replace avoidance, numbing and manipulative patterns of behavior. This group allows the clients an opportunity to begin managing emotions in a healthy, proactive manner.

Equine Therapy (seasonal)For over 40 years, horses have been recognized and extensively used in Europe for their therapeutic value in helping to improve cognitive, physical, emotional, social and behavioral skills. Equine therapy is a combination of many horse-related activities. Horses are responsive animals with awareness and sensitivity to their surroundings and to people. They are large and powerful and create an environment to overcome fear. Horses are considered a valuable partner in physical and emotional healing to develop confidence.

Breath Work Process Group This group focuses on the use of a breathing technique that is akin to meditation. It is used to increase relaxation, reduce anxiety, help reduce insomnia, increase mindfulness and focus, integrate emotions and increase energy. It is practiced either lying down on yoga mats or seated. The breathing is a deep, continuous, connected and circular breath, preferably through the mouth or just through the nose. It is slightly more vigorous than a resting breath, but not so vigorous as to create hyperventilation. It can induce a very relaxed, meditative state that can create a sense of well-being, insight and relaxation. Its origins are in pranayama yoga and meditation techniques. Clients are coached to breathe in this fashion and guided to a deeply relaxed state for the 45-minute duration of the group.

Music Therapy Music Therapy has been shown to have significant effect on an individual’s relaxation level, respiration rate, self-reported pain reduction and behaviorally observed and self-reported anxiety levels. Clients attending music group have the opportunity to express themselves in several forms. Activities include: songwriting, music trivia with a focus on team-building and performance group where clients perform the music they’ve written, with the counselors’ help. Participants have a concert group where the counselor brings a local musician in recovery to perform and tell his or her story. Other options include an animated “drum your

family group” where clients use percussion instruments to describe family dynamics, lyric analysis and, on occasion, a biographical film on a popular musician.

Art Therapy Art Therapy is the therapeutic use of art-making, within a professional relationship, by people who experience illness, trauma or challenges in living, and by people who seek personal development. Through creating art and reflecting on the products and processes of art, people can increase awareness of self and others while enjoying the life-affirming pleasure of making art.

Recreational Therapy A therapy to encourage the development of healthy habits and routines into sobriety, Recreation Therapy is also a positive demonstration that clients can have fun in sobriety. Activities are determined by client feedback and are performed with a licensed trainer, as well as our very own therapist. Everyone is encouraged to join in, regardless of gender, age or athletic ability. The counselor generally facilitates two activities, including Kickball, Volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee or Wiffle Ball. Clients can also chose to do a circuit training activity that is comprised of walking/jogging/running and body weight exercises. The circuit training is preceded by a dynamic stretching routine that all clients can participate in, even if they are doing the other activity. Throughout the session, clients are able to discuss nutrition and setting goals for engaging or re-engaging in healthy activities moving forward in their sobriety.

Spa Services We offer spa-like services, including massage, chiropractic services, manicures, pedicures, and haircutting. These activities are important for our clients’ self-esteem, and can also be therapeutic for clients with pain management issues.

Our specialty series is a therapist recommended program for clients who have specific issues and/or dual diagnoses. The specialty series gives the therapist and the client time to address specific issues in more depth. The small group format of this series allows the client to share more openly and not be intimidated. This format also allows the group to discover that they are not alone in their challenges. They are apble to share their experiences and gain strength from each other. Each specialty series runs for two weeks. This gives the client time to work on these specific issues while simultaneously addressing their alcoholism and/or addiction. Our ability to provide these specific services vastly improves our client’s mental health and strengthens their recovery process.

Creative expression is naturally healing. Many in recovery have lost or never had a creative “voice” with which to express themselves. This program offers them the opportunity to reclaim or discover that voice.

Expressive Arts Therapy zeroes in on four points: expression, imagination, active participation and establishing a mind-body connection. While in treatment, we will use expressive forms like drama, music, dance and visual art. Rather than the final product, the creative process itself is the focus here.

Studio Art (creating art in various media)Employing media such as pencil, charcoal, pastels and acrylic paints, studio art sessions will explore the expressive/creative side of recovery. While instructing in the “basics” of art-making, participants will explore creative possibilities through exercises such as giving form to their feelings, brain health copy work, art from memory and imagination, self-portraits and positive and negative space.

These creative studio sessions also incorporate some components of the “Drawing with the Right Side of the Brain” art course. These activities activate and utilize the creative “non-critical,” “non-verbal” right side of the brain as opposed to the “critical,” “verbal” left side.

Improv (creative invention, theatre games, activities)Improv sessions are designed to promote and improve listening, concentration, spontaneity, imagination and interaction skills and access to emotions. They place participants into situations where they are inclined to interact naturally and without self-consciousness: trusting the choices they make. Working from prompt cards players use their bodies and voices to effectively communicate and tell the truth in imaginary circumstances.

Art Journaling (a personal creative journey)Clients will focus more on process than on outcome in these sessions that integrate the handling of various colors, words and images in open-ended art-making. Encouraging creative freedom, clients transform their subjective feelings/thoughts: hopes, fears, goals and dreams into a tangible and objective artistic reality. The group’s aim is experimentation, exploration and discovery.

Drama (acting w/scripts/skitwriting, stage basics)Working freely from short scenes and skits with neither established character types, motivation or given situations written in participants’ brains, we will brainstorm different possibilities and present them. The psycho-dramatic process is designed to bring a person into the experience of the authentic state of being. While there, spontaneity can be released, and creative choices that better one’s life can be made.

Relationship with GodA client will learn more about the love and forgiveness that come from having a relationship with God, and that personal healing begins through God and not self.

PrayerA client is provided with the chance to pray with others, taught how to pray and encouraged to commune in prayer daily with others.

MeditationA client is taught the differences between prayer and meditation. The focus of prayer is to speak to God, while in meditation, clients are focused on listening to God speaking to them.

Bible StudyBible study is focused on helping the client and teaching how beneficial scriptural reading and meditation can be. The word of God can help a client resist the temptation and allure of drugs and alcohol, and can help the client break the cycle of addiction.

12 StepsThrough integration of the 12 steps and the Life Recovery Bible, clients learn how to live a God-centered life without the use of drugs and alcohol.

Each client receives a therapist-designed aftercare plan once the outcome of treatment has been decided. The treatment plan will only be formulated after it has been decided if the client is to return home or remain locally once treatment at Beachway Therapy Center has been concluded.

Every month, the client will be contacted by a case manager who will inquire as to how the client is adjusting to life outside of the treatment program, address any concerns and answer any questions a person might have.

Each client who remains locally after treatment will be relocated into an approved sober living environment.

A client who decides against staying locally after treatment is encouraged to continue aftercare in the area in which they live. A therapist will work with the client to set up a continued care plan prior to completing treatment.

The Alumni Department is designed to offer clients a support group in form of a community built by their fellow alumni. These support groups are paramount in the early stages of recovery, especially once you have completed treatment. The purpose of the alumni department is to create a fellowship and allow for clients who have completed treatment to stay connected and help them provide a platform to build their new lives in sobriety.

We encourage all our alumni who are able to participate to do so and stay in touch. Our alumni have the option of participating in biweekly alumni meetings, as well as fun and exciting events, all of which help the clients find ways to spend and enjoy their sober transition time. In addition, we offer lifetime support in the form of two-day re-entry into the Beachway program for a brief refresher as well as to provide current clients with hope for the future. We also implement optional alumni reunions to provide the community with a show of hope and success in a new way of life. Alumni and Aftercare staff work with current clients, as well as with alumni clients, to help them start their new way of life. We provide a Beachway Resource Center to help them build and work on their goals for the future, such as applying for jobs, creating resumes and cover letters or exploring educational and volunteer options.
