My Dear Friends in Christ,

The ashes on our forehand have been washed away, and perhaps by now we have decided (and undecided and

decided again) on our Lenten observances and practices. As always, the First Sunday of Lent presents to us one of the three Gospel accounts of Jesus’ temptations. Note that Jesus’ temptations are both specific to Him, but also speak to

us more generally. In other words, Jesus is tempted by sins specific to his own life; at the same time, don’t all of us experience the temptations of power and prestige from time to time?

I am so taken by the last words of this Gospel:

When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time

Though it may seem strange to consider, I found myself reflecting upon what the devil may have done when he did

return to Jesus. Of course, the next temptations are never explicitly written about in Scripture, though perhaps we can make educated guesses that at different parts of Jesus’ life, and more specifically during this Passiontide, He

experienced moments of temptation.

I wonder, then, what these temptations could have been? A more pressing question for each one of us during Lent is

what our own temptations? Let us pray together not solely to overcome temptations, but to recognize them in the first place.

Make sure to be aware of the Lenten resources available in the back of the Church. This year we are making “mite”

boxes available for the support of own Vincent de Paul Fund that supports the parish’s efforts to live and practice the Corporal Works of Mercy.

With prayers,

HEALTH CARE WORKSHOP SERIES

April 7th, 1:00 pm PALLIATIVE CARE vs HOSPICE CARE:

Understanding the difference

Palliative care and hospice care share the same primary focus - patient dignity, comfort and quality of life - but, they are not the same.

Come and learn what the differences are and when it’s appropriate to choose one over the over.

Our presenters are:

Sr. Joseph Paul Manderine, C.S.JB., is a member of the Sisters of St. John the Baptist. She currently works for Hospice of

Westchester as a Registered Nurse. She has been actively involved in the health care field most of her religious life. She previously

worked in administration at Providence Rest Nursing Home in the Bronx. Sister has also served her community in various

administrative positions.

Lorraine Campanelli currently serves as the Director at Cabrini Immigrant Services in Dobbs Ferry, NY. She has a Master’s Degree

in Social Work from Yeshiva University, NYC and a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s Degree in Education from St. John’s

University, NY. She received a post-Master’s certificate in Health Care Management (Palliative Care) from Fordham University.

She also has post-Master’s certificates in Health Care Ministry Leadership and Spiritual Direction. She serves on the social work

Advisory Boards for Westchester Community College and the College of New Rochelle.

Dr. Paulette Sansone is a social worker, researcher and grant writer who holds both a Master’s Degree in Social Work and a PhD in

Social Work and Gerontology from Fordham University. She has been the recipient of over 2 million dollars in grant money, of

which $750,000 was designated for researching palliative care in long-term care. Several of these studies, conducted for the

Department of Health, resulted in education and resource manuals which were distributed to all nursing homes in NYS.

All workshops will be held in the school cafeteria at 1:00 pm.

Refreshments will be served.

Please call the Parish Office to Register for the April Workshop.

OUR LENTEN JOURNEY

Distributed with the bulletin last weekend was a Lenten Journey Calendar. Additional copies are available in

the vestibule this weekend. Our Lenten Journeys are varied and we hope that you will take advantage of

creating your own. On the insert are suggestions for Prayer and Faith in Action that we can all do

to make this a meaningful Lent

LENTEN LUNCH – STATIONS OF THE CROSS St. Francis of Assisi is credited with popularizing the devotion known as the Stations of the Cross. It is a particularly

Franciscan devotion because it asks us to look at and reflect on images of Jesus in his final hours of suffering and glory

and respond from our hearts in prayer. Join us for a Lenten Lunch (Soup and Salad) hosted by the various parish or-

ganizations each Friday at 11:45 in the Church Hall followed by the Stations of the Cross at 12:30 in the church.

This Friday, March 15th is sponsored by the Parish Council.

“No-Food Dinner”

The Parish Council will be hosting a “No-Food Dinner” on Friday, March 22nd at 6:30 pm

in the Church Hall. We have been asked “What are we doing?”.

We will remember that there are people who cannot gather around a table and who have nothing to eat. Admission will be a donation of canned goods for the Food Pantry.

NO food will be served.

There will be prayers, a Reflection and a Lenten Musical Presentation

from our own Andy Bauer and John Callison. Then spend some time in conversation with your friends and fellow parishioners.

We hope you will take the time to remember those who are in need.

Cardinals Annual Stewardship Appeal

I know that many of you have received the letter from the Cardinal’s Annual

Stewardship Appeal. I would like to thank all who have already responded with a

contribution or a pledge toward our Parish goal of $85,000. The Cardinal’s

Appeal helps us at Sacred Heart along with all of the other parishes in the

Archdiocese to support: Religious Education Programs, Seminarians and Diaconate at St. Joseph’s Seminary,

Family Life Office and All of the offices and ministries that we rely on and so much more!

Please send your contribution to the Stewardship Appeal Office,

drop it in a Sunday basket or to the Parish Office.

Thank you for your support.

Out of the mouths of babes…..

Our first and second graders answered the question, “What can I do for Lent?”

Their responses were the Dos and Don’ts that remind of us that simple things mean so much.

I will….. Make my bed everyone morning, help with the dishes, help my parents clean the house,

help my aunt feed the dog, play nice with my brother, help my friend when he’s hurt, be kind,

LISTEN,

Go to Church!

I will give up….cake, juice, TV, chewing gum, i-pad, video games and fighting with my brother.

Sometimes we learn more from them!
