According to the CDC bullying is an aggressive behavior that is repeated over time and involves a real or perceived imbalance of power or strength
Fun Fact: 500 years ago the term bully meant sweetheart
Physical: hitting, kicking, shoving, intimidating, stealing/hiding personal possessions
Verbal: name calling, teasing, insulting, taunting
Social: spreading rumors, shunning, setting up
Cyber: using the internet, mobile phones, or other digital technologies to harm someone
Anywhere that the bully thinks he/she can get away with it
Most common locations in schools are the playground, cafeteria, hallways, & locker rooms…why is that?
Within the last year:◦ 20% of high school students were bullied on
school property◦ Numbers were highest for 9th graders @ 24.5%,
and lowest for 12th graders @ 13.5%◦ Numbers were higher among females @ 21.2%,
and lower among males @ 18.7 %
People who bully are insecure or have low self-esteem
Bullying usually occurs when there are no students around
Only boys bully Reporting bullying will only
make the situation worse Teachers often intervene to
stop bullying
Don’t cry or get upset Tell an adult you trust Stick together Remove yourself from
the situation Ignore the bully Firmly tell them to stop
Take a stand against the bully
Walk away and get an adult Support the person being
bullied Utilize anti-bully programs Bring the issue out in the
open DO NOT USE VIOLENCE
Think of a time when you or someone you knew was being bullied. How did it make you feel? How did it make your friends feel? Did you do anything about the situation or did you sweep it under the rug?
