Introduction

Acts 8 records the preaching of Philip.

“Philip the evangelist,” not Philip the apostle: Acts 21:8; 6:1-2

One of the persecuted disciples who “went everywhere preaching the word”: Acts 8:4

Preached to the Samaritans (vv. 5-12), Simon (v. 13), and the Ethiopian treasurer (vv. 26-39).

The cases of conversion in the book of Acts provide us with a wealth of instructive teaching.

He Went to Worship

He had come to Jerusalem to worship: v. 27

Obviously a proselyte to Judaism: Deut. 16

Imagine how much he sacrificed to come so far and stay so long!

Is worship as high a priority with you?

5

He Read the Scriptures

On the return trip he read the Scriptures: v. 28, 30; Isa. 53

We need to spend as much time as possible reading the Scriptures: Jn. 6:68; 1 Cor. 10:13; Matt. 4:1-11; 2 Tim. 3:16-17

God’s word is understandable, but sometimes we need some help: Eph. 3:1-5; 2 Pet. 3:16; Eph. 4:11-12; Rom. 10:14-15

6

He Asked a Question

When he didn’t understand he asked an honest question: v. 34

Such questions are important and reveal one’s character: Lk. 8:15; Jas. 1:21; 1 Thess. 2:13

For various reasons many fail to ask such questions about the Scriptures.

All of us need to imitate the eunuch in this regard!

7

He Heard Gospel Preaching

Philip answered the eunuch’s question with gospel preaching: v. 35

Preached the same message in Samaria: v. 12

Preaching is so important: 1 Cor.1:21; Rom. 10:17; Mk. 16:15-16; Matt. 28:18-20

We need to take advantage of every time we have the opportunity to hear the gospel! Matt. 5:6

8

He Applied the Sermon to Himself

Proper application of a sermon is not always easy to find! v. 36; Matt. 23:3; 2 Sam. 12:1ff; Isa. 66:2

Eunuch had the spirit of Isaiah 66:2.

Obeying the gospel is an individual affair: Prov. 4:23; Psa. 119:2, 11, 36

9

He Confessed His Faith

The eunuch made the “good confession”: v. 37; 1 Tim. 6:12

The “good confession” is absolutely required for salvation: Rom. 10:10; Matt. 10:32

The “good confession” is an acknowledgement of His claims: Rom. 1:4; Eph. 5:23; Acts 4:11-12; 2:47; 1 Cor. 3:11

Have you made the “good confession”? Phil. 2:9-11

10

He Was Baptized

He made his intentions to be baptized NOW crystal clear: v. 38; 22:16

The necessity of baptism for salvation is one of the clearest teachings of the NT: Mk. 16:16; Acts 2:38; Gal. 3:26-27; 1 Pet. 3:21; Col. 2:12

The mode of baptism is also a clear teaching: Acts 8:36; Col. 2:12; Matt. 14:13

Is something hindering you from being baptized?

11

He Went on His Way Rejoicing

What was the result of his conversion? v. 39

There are many reasons to rejoice: Now “in Christ” : Gal. 3:27; 1 Pet. 2:9-10 Now a new creature: 2 Cor. 5:17 Access to “all spiritual blessings”: Eph.

1:3 Receive redemption: Eph. 1:7 Reconciled to God: Col. 1:19-22 Receive salvation: 2 Tim. 2:10; Acts 2:41,

47; Eph. 5:23 Hope and promise of eternal life: 1 Jn.
