Ribbon

The menu structure has changed to a new Ribbon, which is organized in tabs by common functionality. Within each of these tabs are the items that are relevant to the topic. The operations that are used most frequently are placed towards the left-hand side of the tabs. The following are the tabs included in the Ribbon: Home Basic usage, i.e. Open, Save and Print inquires, as well as export to Excel and Permissions.

Ability to display data in different languages The Insight

® product now has the ability to display data in different

languages. Unicode support is now provided as standard, meaning any Unicode data stored in JD Edwards™ EnterpriseOne or JD World can now be displayed correctly.

The following examples in Figure ‎3-17 and Figure ‎3-18 show Japanese

characters being displayed.

Localization The Insight

® Localization functionality allows a user to utilize any of the

alternate language captions stored within JD Edwards™. The functionality will allow a user to tailor the display of the product for their given language.

Figure ‎3-19 displays a standard GL Balances Template with Spanish

Localization enabled. All captions that are present within the associated JD Edwards™ system are displayed within the Inquiry.

ODBC Free Connections To aid client installs and upgrades, the Administration Application has been enhanced with new code to remove the need for ODBC Connections. This functionality works in association with all supported databases of Microsoft™ SQL Server™, Oracle, IBM™ DB2™, and IBM™ UDB™. The major benefit of this is the removal of the ODBC configuration for large multi PC Insight

® installations.

Connections to Microsoft™ SQL Server™ databases now can use the

SQLClient Data Provider connection (shown in Figure ‎3-20). This was

previously available in version 8.1 for the Object Repository.

Figure ‎3-20: New SQLClient Data Provider

For clients using Oracle, IBM™ DB2™, and IBM™ UDB™, there is now an

opportunity to use the Built-in Data Provider (shown in Figure ‎3-21).

Figure ‎3-21: New Built-in Data Provider

Please note that clients can continue to use ODBC, these new connection options are provided as an additional feature.

Advanced Logging The Administration Application has been upgraded with advanced logging functionality, allowing users the ability to diagnose, review and monitor both the Administration Application and the Insight

® application.

With any new v9 repository a new log stream called default is provided (as

shown in Figure ‎3-22).

Figure ‎3-22: New Logging Option

The default settings are shown below in Figure ‎3-23, but can be configured to

provide as much information as required.

Figure ‎3-23: Default Log Stream

InsightSoftware.com Whats New

The default log stream is only the start for this functionality. Users can add multiple log streams, enabling them and disabling them for specific situations. All the data collected can be viewed easily through a view history dialog

shown in Figure ‎3-24.

Figure ‎3-24: View History dialog

The information displayed can then be narrowed down by the extensive filter

criteria. In the following example (shown in Figure ‎3-25) the Categories filter

is being used to see who is logging into Insight®. This filter could be also

combined with a date range or user name to narrow down the results further, ensuring full visibility of the applications usage.

New Install Mechanism – ClickOnce With the release of V9, Insight

® now has its own built-in database connectivity

layer which has eliminated the need for the database vendor’s connectivity software, e.g. Client Access or the Oracle client. This built-in connectivity layer has allowed InsightSoftware.com to offer an alternative deployment method, ClickOnce from Microsoft. The benefits of this installation approach are:

Applications can be installed via a network deployment, web or file server, making the installation process streamlined and faster. Users will not have to re-create ODBC data sources or manually install software on their workstations

A non-administrative user can install and upgrade with minimal technical assistance. With a traditional installer, the user needs to have Administrator privileges on that PC

The upgrade process is also streamlined via:

Easier Upgrade Path – Upgrades can be provided automatically on startup of the application. Only portions of the application that have changed are downloaded

Intelligent downloading: If the network connection is down at the time, ClickOnce will check again for updates the next time the application runs

Providing different upgrade strategies: o Checking for updates on application startup o Providing a user interface for updates

Providing different upgrade delivery times: o The application can be also set to check each time the

application runs or potentially once a week or once a month Please note: A condition of the ClickOnce deployment process is that users have network access through which they receive automatic updates. These updates can be downloaded from the Web or from a Network Share. Please feel free to talk to customer services for more information on how ClickOnce may suit your business model.

The ClickOnce streamlined deployment can be seen in the following screen shots

Formatting Upgrade – double underline In response to client feedback, Final Totals in a balance sheet can now be formatted with a double underline ensuring compliance with accounting standards. The formatting dialog now supports the double underline option, as shown in

Update Links As a result of customer feedback, the new Update Links function was added to the Administration Application. It allows a user to quickly analyze multiple inquiries and uncover instances where Links to other inquiries/templates are not functional. ‘Right click’ on a specific document folder, or the entire document folder as

per Figure ‎3-31 and you will see a new option called Update Links.

Figure ‎3-31: New Update Links Right Click Option

The new Update Links Functionality allows users to display quickly any

broken links within the object repository (as shown in Figure ‎3-32).

Links can be easily changed within this dialog by ‘highlighting’ the Inquiry, ‘clicking’ on Change Link and ‘specifying’ a new inquiry to link to as per

Figure ‎3-33 and Figure ‎3-34.

Manufacturing Module Overview The new Manufacturing module provides greater analysis for your Product Data Management (PDM), Shop Floor, and Production Costing aspects of your business. The Insight

® manufacturing module allows you to create reports based on

direct access to the following JD Edwards™ files: • Bill of Material Master File (F3002) • Routing Master File (F3003) • Item Cost Component Add-Ons File (F30026) • Work Centre Rates File (F30008) • Work Order Parts List File (F3111) • Work Order Routing File (F3112) • Work Order Master File (F4801) • Work Order Time Transactions File (F31122) • Work Order Variance File (F3102)

The following templates are currently what are proposed for v9. Modifications will be made as more client feedback occurs.

Manufacturing Module: Product Data Management (PDM) The manufacturing module allows you to see real-time, summarized cost information, while allowing you to drill down to more detailed information. Bill of materials, Work centre’s with rates applied and routing and engineering order information for manufacturing are now easily displayed and analyzed. Users have the ability to drill down on the net added values for a costed item, as well as the material cost components. Another important feature of this module is the ability to track yield percentages to plan for discarded products. In this module, Insight

® always takes the cost from the Item Cost Component

Add-Ons File (F30026) to ensure it is correct. The following are the standard manufacturing templates associated with Product Data Management.
