G race N O T E S Our Mission: To serve and unite those we touch with the Grace of God. Our Vision: Transforming lives to become the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus in the world. MAKING DISCIPLES OF JESUS CHRIST Dear Friends, Greetings, and may the fullness of God’s blessings be upon each of you as we enter this new year. I celebrate where we have come to as a church over this past year, and look forward to all that 2015 can bring. I am excited about moving into our new Administrative Board structure, and pray for God’s guidance as we work with this new way of ordering our life of ministry together. It is important to remember, however, that as much as we have emphasized this restructuring over these last months, the purpose is to enable us to better engage in active ministry and to live into the goals that we as a congregation adopted to guide our ministry. In May, after much prayer, study, and discussion, we adopted the following goals: Live - We shall grow in our faith as we live in community with each other and in the world as the people God has created and gifted us to be. Worship - We shall regularly offer praise and thanksgiving to God and will seek to open ourselves to God who, by the Holy Spirit, is present with us. Share - We will share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with our neighbors through our words and our actions. Care - We shall care for and be responsive to the needs and wellbeing of each other, our neighbors, and God's creation. As we enter this New Year, may we, through prayer, study, and worship, be open to how and where God is calling and guiding each of us and all of us together as Grace Church. Through study, outreach opportunities, ministry trainings, and small-group and fellowship opportunities, I ask each of you to commit this next year to discover at least one way that God is guiding you to grow in your faith, to nurture and support others within our congregation, to reach out to share God’s love beyond the walls of our church, and to participate regularly in the worship. If we will all faithfully and prayerfully make this commitment, we will see our ministry flourish, and we will truly make a difference in the lives of God’s people in our community and beyond. This is my pray- er, and my commitment as your pastor, to do all that I can for its fulfillment. God’s blessings, Pastor Kevin

    ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL

In January, we will continue our study of the Gospels. Each hour is “self-contained”, so you won’t have missed anything. The sessions include a DVD on the earliest Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – and one on the other Gospels. There are 25-30 of these writings that have survived, some complete and some just small fragments.

During Lent, our source will be 24 Hours That Changed the World, again by Adam Hamilton. The format is the same. There is a DVD presentation supplemented by discus-sion from the participants guide, which includes 40 days of devotions. The guide is available on most screens or you may purchase the paperback book for $10.00.

All are welcome to join us at 9:00 a.m. in room six, just to the left of the sanctuary. Even if Sunday morning is not an option for you, sharing in the daily devotions brings us closer in the community of faith that we treasure at Grace. For more information, please contact Nancy Milne

STILL TIME TO GIVE A PRESENT! The gifts have all been opened, and chances are not one of them was a glass of clean water. Throughout January the glass pitcher will be in the gathering area to accept your donations to Causelife, which strives to provide just that to much of the world. Please consider contributing what you would spend on bottled water and other bottled beverages. For more infor-mation, please contact Nancy Milne aor their site at causelife.org.

All-Church Quarterly Town Hall Meeting Sunday, January 25th ~ 8:45-9:45 a.m. Please plan to attend. These Town Hall type meetings are an important part of how we can com-municate with one another as a church. There will be important information about our strategic planning, specific discussion of plans for the next year, and an update on our finances. As always, this is a good time to bring any questions, concerns, or ideas that you may have for discussion by the whole body.

FROM DIANE MARTIN, GUMC LAY LEADER Grace UMC will only be able to fulfill its calling and Pastor Kevin’s vision of reaching those within 2 ½ miles of our door when we all realize how great God is and Jesus’ saving grace by his life, death, and resurrection. It is only as we set all else aside, seeking and putting God’s will first, that anything truly meaningful can be accom-plished. Certainly some good may happen, but the work of the Lord must be so important, so paramount to GUMC, that our neighbors can’t help but see and be drawn. Revival is an old word that has meaning from the past. Is revival seen as real and viable today, or old, antiquated, and quaint for our time? Could “quaint” really mean that I am too sophisticated, busy, tired, scared (fill in your own honest answer). As we enter this New Year, are you ready to seek a revival of faith, a new commitment to God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Bible, and study in your life? As we allow ourselves to study, to discover, to remember the magnitude of God’s love for us, shown in the saving grace of Jesus, all else pales by comparison. God has great plans for us! But too often we think that we need to be self-sufficient, take-charge people, and the result is that our God is too small, our faith is too small, our joy is too small, our life in Christ is too small, and our vision is too small. Let’s learn together to let God be large and in charge, and by God’s grace, we will make a real difference for Christ in our community and in the lives of God’s people.

    RELATIONAL EVANGELISM WORKSHOP JANUARY 24th ~ 10:00 A.M.– 4:00 P.M.

    SPIRIT RIVER COMMUNITY CHURCH, ISANTI

How do we reach new people in a world where people don’t wake up on a Sunday morning thinking, “Where should I go to church today?” One of our most important tasks and one of our primary goals for GUMC is to share our faith with our neighbors through our words and our actions. Please plan to join Pastor Kevin in this important training being offered by the Minnesota Annual Confer-ence on relational evangelism, that is, learning how to reach out to our neighbors to build relation-ships and invite them to join in a life-changing journey of faith.

This workshop will teach participants how to develop a system of invitation so that their congrega-tions are continually building relationships with new people. Participants will learn practical ideas for using existing networks to build new relationships, holding “just-for-them” events, planning a fishing expedition sermon series, and more.

The training will be led by Kay Kotan, a church coach and consultant, and coauthored the book Get Their Name: Grow Your Church by Forming New Relationships.

We want to send a team of at least six, including Pastor Kevin and five lay members. Please contact Pastor Kevin at [email protected], or 925-435-5696 by Sunday, January 11th regard-ing your interest and/or questions.

On behalf of 360 communities and specifi-cally Armful of Love a BIG THANK YOU to all who contributed gifts for the two families that Grace UMC sponsored.

We’ve been lucky so far this winter with our snow fall, but who knows what the upcoming months have in store for us? Volunteers are needed to help keep our sidewalks clear! If you need to shovel your walk at home, chances are the church needs clearing too—so put this on your “to do” list and help keep our side-walks safe. Shovels are at the church, but you might like your own better. For heavy, serious snow we have a snow blower and you can contact Gordy Peters for information.
