His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa yesterday commuted the death sentences

handed down to four defendants by the Military Cassation Court to life in prison.

Mubarak Adel Mubarak Mohanna, Fadhil Alsayed Abbas Hasan Radhi, Alsayed Alawi Hussain Alawi Hussain, and Mohammed Abdulhassan Ahmed Al Mitghawi are the four convicts whose death sentences are commuted.

The King’s decision is as per Article 41 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bahrain and Article 84 of the Military Judiciary Law issued by Law Decree 34/2002, Chief of Military Judiciary Dr Major-General Yousef Rashid Flaifel said. Article 41 stipulates that “the King may abate or commute a sentence by Decree.”

The Military High Court had on Wednesday upheld the death sentence of the four men for attempting to assassinate Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, the Commander-in-Chief of Bahrain Defence Force (BDF), last year. The four men were also charged with various terror crimes, the major being the

assassination attempt on BDF Commander-in-Chief.

In the case, six defendants, including one soldier, were sentenced to death and to 15 years in jail while seven other defendants were sentenced to seven years in jail. The court had ordered the revocation of the citizenship of the 13 defendants. Five suspects were acquitted by the court in the case.

The verdicts were appealed and six defendants appeared before the High Military Court of Appeals on February 21.

The court reduced the sentence of two defendants from seven to five years but upheld all the other verdicts. These included the death sentence for four defendants and the seven-year prison terms for two defendants who were present at the trial.

The death sentences handed down were the first to be issued by the Military Cassation Court against civilians. It was in December the six men were first sentenced to death and their citizenship revoked after they were convicted on charges of forming a terrorist cell and plotting to assassinate the BDF chief.

Eviction of envoy to Kuwait:Manila demands explanationManila

Manila demanded an explanation yesterday

after its ambassador to Kuwait was expelled, shocking Philippine authorities and deepening a diplomatic row over the treatment of domestic workers in the Gulf state.

The two nations had been working to resolve differences sparked by the murder of a Philippine maid, whose body was found stuffed in her employer’s freezer in Kuwait earlier this year.

But relations plunged after the Philippines released videos last week of embassy staff helping Filipino workers flee from allegedly abusive employers, which Kuwait called a violation of its sovereignty.

Philippine Foreign Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano apologised, but Kuwaiti officials announced Wednesday they were expelling ambassador Renato Villa and recalling their own envoy from Manila.

“The department (foreign ministry) served a diplomatic note to the Embassy of Kuwait conveying its strong surprise and great displeasure over the declaration of Ambassador Renato Pedro Villa as persona non grata,” the ministry said in a statement.

In the note, Cayetano also demanded the Kuwaiti government explain “the continued detention of four Filipinos hired by the Philippine embassy and the issuance of arrest warrants against three diplomatic personnel”.

Manila has said its embassy hired three of the detained Filipinos for the rescues.

Speaking to reporters in Singapore, Cayetano said he disapproved of the release of the videos but defended the action of the embassy staff, citing urgency.

“We’re still optimistic, we’re hoping for the best but also preparing for the worst,” he said late Thursday, adding there are around 262,000 Filipinos in Kuwait, nearly 60 percent of them domestic workers.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s spokesman

Harry Roque said he hoped bilateral ties would not worsen further.

Tensions rose earlier this year following the murder of maid Joanna Demafelis, prompting Duterte to ban Filipina workers from deploying to Kuwait for work.

Duterte had alleged that Arab employers routinely rape their Filipina workers, force them to work 21 hours a day and feed them scraps.

Relations appeared to recover after a Kuwaiti court sentenced to death in absentia a Lebanese man and his Syrian

wife for Demafelis’ killing.Following the verdict,

Duterte this month announced plans to visit Kuwait to seal an agreement on workplace safety guarantees for the 252,000 Filipinos working in the Gulf nation.

But Cayetano on Thursday expressed doubt about the deal because “the ambassador (of Kuwait)... was suddenly recalled and is not answering our inquiries at this point in time”.

The proposal sets terms for vacation leaves, food and custody of passports, Duterte’s spokesman Roque said.

Some 10 million Filipinos work abroad and the money they send home is critical to the Philippine economy. (AFP)

Iran messed with Obama, but not with me: TrumpUS President Donald

Trump said that his administration has kept Iran in check where former president Barack Obama had failed to do so in a special interview with Fox & Friends Thursday

“They used to scream ‘death to America,’” Trump said. “They don’t scream it anymore. They screamed it with him [Obama], but not with me.”

Earlier Thursday, Iran’s supreme leader called on Muslim nations to unite against the United States, saying Tehran would never yield to “bullying.”

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has said he may have failed in efforts to persuade Donald Trump to stick to an international nuclear deal with Iran.

“My view is... that he will get

rid of this deal on his own, for domestic reasons,” Macron said at the end of a three-day state visit to the US.

Trump has until 12 May to decide on the deal, which aimed to prevent Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.

He has been a strong critic of the accord, calling it “insane”.

On Wednesday, Macron used similar language to describe frequent shifts in the US position on global issues, including climate change and the Iran agreement.

“It can work in the short term, but it’s very insane in the medium to long term,” he is quoted as telling reporters following a question-and-answer session with students at George Washington University.

Macron made changing the

US president’s mind on Iran a top priority for his visit but ended up admitting there was a “big risk” Trump would abandon the deal.

He agreed with Trump that any deal should include a wider agreement on Iran’s influence in the Middle East and should cover the country’s nuclear activities longer term, as well as its ballistic missile programme.

He said he would work with Trump to build a “new framework” in the Middle East - and especially in Syria.

His comments came at the end of a state visit in which the two leaders discussed differences on global trade and the environment, including the possibility of the US rejoining the Paris climate accord. (Jpost, BBC)

I hope we the people of Bahrain will always live in peace together and there is nothing we can wish for more than this for us and for our beloved country,” he

said.DT News spoke to

Abdulhassan Ahmed Al Metghawi, convict Mohammed’s father who said the reduction of the penalty by HM the King is a very happy news for his family. He said HM was highly appreciated for this fatherly gesture that will make many homes and families in Bahrain happy.

“What HM gave us today is not strange when it comes to a wise leader like him and we hope his kindness towards his people will be something they will always

be blessed with,” said Al Metghawi.

“I believe HM’s kind gesture will not only make our families happy but also each and every home in Bahrain. We hope our country will be blessed with safety, security and stability under our wise leadership. I want to ask my son to thank God and to learn from this experience and wish the best for his country so that the people live in peace,” he said.

Mubarak Adel Mohanna’s father said HM’s forgiveness is something he would never forget.

“I want to thank God and I want to thank HM the King and the Commander of the BDF and I want to tell my son that I hope this is a lesson for him and other people who choose the wrong paths in life. Bahrain is too precious to us,” he told DT.

Meanwhile, on February 21, at the High Military Court, two appeals filed by Hussain Mohammed Ahmed Shehab and Mohammed Yussef Marhoon Al Ajmi were accepted.

The sentence was reduced to five years imprisonment.

Bahrain’s leading role in supporting United Nations’

2030 Agenda and 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) was hailed yesterday by a top UN official.

This came as Amin El-Sharkawi, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, spoke about a voluntary or optional report which the UN expects countries to develop detailing their experience in adopting the SDGs.

Bahrain has prepared the report and submitted it for review at the high-level political forum of the United Nations Economic and Social Council in July of 2018.

This, El-Sharkawi said, reflects Bahrain’s “high sense and a moral commitment to achieving these

goals.” The agency, he said, is looking

forward to transferring Bahrain’s experiences to other countries and introducing Bahrain’s advanced programmes, projects and management in the development fields to those countries.

Bahrain’s progress in SDGs is “clearly reflected in the Government’s Action Plan 2015-2018 and the Country Plan signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as well as the Strategic Partnership Framework with the United Nations’ agencies for the years 2018-2022,” said El-Sharkawi highlighting that this is also boosting Bahrain in its economic vision 2030.

“The UN wants countries to

listen to all voices of civil society, the private sector, parliament and academic to enrich this report and include their views and proposals in it,” said El Sharkawi.

The move, he said, will help UN to transfer successful experiences from other countries, which have adopted sustainable development goals, especially with respect to environmental projects, infrastructure, social development and others.

El-Sharkawi stressed that the UN would continue providing technical and technological expertise to integrate sustainable development goals according to Bahrain’s requirements.

“We at the United Nations have taken upon ourselves the task of supporting countries,

both locally and regionally, in their efforts to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals through national initiatives aimed at spreading awareness of the culture of these goals, and how to integrate them into society,” added El-Sharkawi.

“We held different workshops for this purpose for all sectors and components of society in various sectors, notably - youth, women and persons with disabilities,” he pointed out.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator stressed that the UN hopes to achieve maximum cooperation between the educational sector, at all its various stages and levels, and other parties responsible for the production of the report.

The Joint Committee between the Supreme

Council for Women (SCW) and the Bahraini Women Union (BWU) held a meeting at the SCW’s premises in Riffa yesterday on mulling ways to enhance cooperation.

Held as part of efforts to activate the joint memorandum of understanding signed between the two sides, the meeting discussed areas of bilateral cooperation and reviewed the main Bahraini women-supporting laws, resolutions and initiatives,

and ways to follow up on their implementation.

The two sides discussed cooperation in following up on the activation of the National Strategy to Protect Women from Domestic Violence, and laws related to family affairs, such as the Family Law and the Law on the Protection from Domestic Violence and their executive edicts.

The meeting also reviewed initiatives aimed at enhancing women’s economic participation, including the Women Development Centre (Riyadat) and the Women’s

Business Finance Portfolio Programme “Riyadat” to support women in business.

Preparation regarding this year’s Bahraini Women’s Day devoted to honouring women in the legislative field and municipal work was also discussed.

The joint meeting also focused on activating the BWU’s participation in this year’s Bahraini Women’s Day, which will be devoted to honouring women in the legislative field and municipal work.

No special status for Nepal: USWashington

The Trump administration has decided to end special

protections for an estimated 9,000 Nepalese immigrants in the United States.

Immigrants will have until June 24, 2019, to leave or find another way to stay in the country to allow for an orderly transition.

They were granted special protections under President Barack Obama after an earthquake in Nepal in April 2015 killed more than 8,000 people. The Obama administration extended the protections for 18 months in October 2016.

But the Department of Homeland Security says

Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has concluded the disruptions from the earthquake “have decreased to a degree that they should no longer be regarded as substantial.”

The U.S. created Temporary Protected Status in 1990 to provide a safe haven for countries affected by war and natural disasters.

More than 70 countries took part in the two-day event titled “No Money for Terror” convened by French President

Jeddah

Saudi Arabia will provide an additional $100 million of

humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of the people of Syria, through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center.

The announcement of the latest aid package was made by Minister of Foreign Affairs Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir on April 25 at an international conference on the future of Syria and the region, held in the Belgian capital Brussels. He pointed out that the meeting

comes after the suspected chemical attack in the city of Douma, in eastern Ghouta, which killed dozens of civilians, including women and children.

“The world is facing a regime allied with terrorist militias who believe that spreading atrocities and committing crimes will bring victory to it, and that war crimes are bearing fruit,” said Al-Jubeir. “In addition to bombing civilians with explosive barrels, the policies of starvation and siege, ethnic and sectarian cleansing, and the demographic change

of Syrian cities and towns, its use of chemical weapons have shocked the entire world.”

He said that the only acceptable solution to the Syrian crisis is a peaceful political resolution, and that Saudi Arabia has been working to achieve this since the crisis began, while also working with others to end the continuing human tragedy in the war-torn country.

The Kingdom has played a role in unifying the ranks of the Syrian opposition and encouraging them to speak with

one voice, he added. After the Riyadh 1 Conference in 2015, Saudi Arabia hosted the Riyadh 2 conference for the Syrian opposition in November 2017, which succeeded in unifying the factions and establishing a negotiating body to take part in the rounds of talks held since then, earning praise from the United Nations. The foreign minister also reiterated his country’s support for the efforts of the UN secretary-general’s envoy, Stephan de Mistura, to resume negotiations between all sides of the conflict.

Bahrain, world nations to fight terror financing

DT News NetworkManama

Bahrain yesterday jointed world nations in pledging

support to bolster efforts to fight terrorism financing associated with the Islamic State group and Al-Qaida.

This came during a conference held by the Organisation for Economic Co-operat ion and Development (OECD) in Paris under the title “No Money for Terror” with the participation of more than 70 countries.

Interior Minister Lt-General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa and Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa represented Bahrain at the conference.

The two-day event was convened by French President  Emmanuel Macron  to coordinate efforts to reduce the terror threat in the long-term.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, IMF chief Christine Lagarde, and Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir were all present.

Participants at the conference agreed to “fully criminalise” terror financing through effective and proportionate sanctions “even in the absence of a link to a specific terrorist act.”

Iran sponsored terrorismInterior Minister Lt-General Shaikh Rashid informed the conference participants about the terrorist activities witnessed by Bahrain in the last few years and the UN member state responsible for it, which is Iran.

He said that in 2015, for violations of banking laws, the Central Bank of Bahrain had to place the “Future Bank”, under its administration and for its links to terrorism-financing.

Role of Future bankIn 2016, two Iranian shareholders of the Future Bank - Bank Saderat and Bank Melli - sought an arbitration in The Hague. “While preparing our defence, investigators found that Future Bank’s management was involved in the following violations:  Laundering $4.7 billion through ‘wire stripping’ SWIFT messages, laundering $2.7 billion through an old method of inter-bank messaging, using hard one-time codes and physical delivery, granting international business loans, issuing letters of credit and trade finance guarantees worth $1.5 billion that violated the international law, and disbursing funds through illegal means in Bahrain to strengthen the Iranian influence in the country,” the Minister said.

He said that this amounted to almost $9 billion. “Those

amounts we found that reached those involved in terrorist acts. We confiscated the funds in dead points meant for those assigned to carry assassination tasks.”

The Interior Minister said that Bahrain continued to contribute to the international efforts to fight extremism and terrorism and drying up their financing sources. He also highlighted his support for the formation of the International Counter-terrorism Financing Centre in Saudi Arabia and looked forward to co-operating with that institution.

Foreign Minister told the conference that Bahrain was among the first countries to make a call to fight terrorism-financing and held an international conference in Manama in 2014.

The Minister called for the reinforcement of coordination between all countries to tackle terrorism and adopt new multi-dimensional methods to achieve integration based on common principles to contain and check terrorism and fight violence, terrorism and extremism in the social media.

He also made a call to deal with terrorist groups such as Hezbollah, especially those supported by other countries, to eliminate them and list their

members and entities in the international terrorism list.

Daesh and Al QaedaMacron, who has returned to France from a state visit to the United States, asserted in a speech that Daesh and Al Qaeda are the two corners of terrorism, adding that the current battle against terrorism is a field one and an approach should be determined to dry up the sources of terrorism financing.

“When we have information — for example, the U.N. list of individuals and entities financing terrorism — we need to make sure measures like asset freezing are implemented fully and quickly,” Lewis said.

Participants called for better information-sharing between intelligence services, law enforcement, financial businesses and the technology industry. They also agreed to improve the traceability of funds going to non-governmental organizations and charity associations.

The participants issued a final statement “Paris Declaration”, stating the importance of an integrated approach to combating terrorism and its financing with the protection of joint efforts to fight terrorism financing. They

affirmed the commitment to stop the funding of individual terrorists and terror groups that are linked to Daesh and Al Qaeda.

The French organizers noted that IS military defeats on the ground have not prevented the group from pursuing its terrorist activities, along with al-Qaida —especially in unstable regions of Afghanistan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Yemen, Egypt and sub-Saharan Africa.

Terror groups don’t only rely on the cash economy — they’re using increasingly hard-to-track tools like prepaid cards, online wallets and crowdfunding operations.

The IS group has also invested in businesses and real estate to ensure its financing. Islamic State revenues alone were estimated at $2.5 billion between 2014 and 2016, according to the French president’s office.

Though most of the attacks in Western countries do not cost a lot of money, a French official said terror groups “behave like big organizations” in that it “costs a lot to recruit, train, equip people and spread propaganda.” The official was speaking anonymously under the presidency’s customary practice. “We are both dragon energy. He is my brother”.With these words in his tweet, Kanye West

immediately endeared himself to Donald Trump this week.As soon as the popular rap singer tweeted with these

words, appreciating US President Donald Trump, there was – immediately - a huge furore in the media, and a big confusion among his fans.

Kanye had also tweeted a picture, of himself, in a cap signed by Donald Trump, with Trump’s campaign slogan ‘Make America Great Again’ on it.

Soon, West got trolled by many of his own fans who got angry. They argued that his political leaning has gone completely wrong.

The US President, however, re-tweeted Kanye’s tweet, saying: ‘Thank you Kanye, very cool!”

Another tweet of Kanye West, dated 26 April 2018, went like this: “Obama was in office for eight years and nothing in Chicago changed.”

It caused even more anger and confusion among his numerous fans. Kanye West, for the record, has 27.9 million twitter followers.

It has been a long tradition in the USA that the majority of the African Americans have always leant more towards the democrats than towards the Republicans. In fact, the Republican Party is often accused of an attitude of white-supremacy.

While some could argue that we are seeing too much of a racist division into a harmless tweet, we cannot deny that most of Kanye West’s fans are actually African Americans.

And thereby a good deal of political acumen is needed when airing one’s views publicly; especially when one has such a large fan following.

Which is why, perhaps, Kanye West had to correct himself immediately with one more tweet.

“My wife just called me and she wanted me to make this clear to everyone. I don’t agree with everything Trump does. I don’t agree 100% with anyone but myself”.

His wife, if you were not aware, is Kim Kardashian. And if you have been keeping up with the Kardashian’s - in

the news, not on the television – you would have known that Kanye West had actually made a startling announcement during his 2015 MTV Video Music Awards speech.

He announced that he would run for the US Presidency in 2020.

I had written a piece in this column after listening to Kanye’s entire speech online, and after seeing the euphoria among his thousands of fans, when he made that announcement. (‘Another US Presidential Hopeful. But for 2020’, 4 Sep 2015, DT News)

That is the reason why I had become confused too. How can Kanye West compete in 2020, if he says he likes Donald Trump? Shouldn’t he be contesting against him?

Kim Kardashian also tweeted this, about her husband’s tweets: “Now when he spoke out about Trump... Most people (including myself) have very different feelings & opinions about this. But this is HIS opinion.   I believe in people being able to have their own opinions, even if really different from mine”.

Let us not forget that Kim Kardashian has close to 58.8 million twitter followers. And that her influence on the young minds is substantial.

Interestingly, within just one day, Kanye West had tweeted on topics as diverse as these: ping pong, Donald Trump, Peter Thiel, the Grammys, the Simpsons, Air Force One, his daughter North West, and People magazine and many among other topics.

So, when a man with such a variety of things on his mind, suddenly tweets just “2024”, what should we infer?

I can infer that he is saying he will not contest for the American Presidency in 2020, but he will do it in 2024.

But, the dragon energy will surely come.

Washington

The US-led coalition fighting the Islamic

State group in Syria and Iraq acknowledged yesterday the deaths of another 28 civilians, increasing the overall toll of non-fighters killed to at least 883.

The coalition said in a statement that it had completed a review in March of 49 reports of potential civilian casualties from air and artillery strikes, of which all but three were deemed not credible.

These three incidents occurred in Iraq and Syria last year.

On May 25, near Al-Mayadin in Syria’s eastern province of Deir Ezzor, 15 people were killed during an air strike

on an IS “media center and headquarters.”

“The investigation assessed that although all feasible precautions were taken and the decision to strike complied with the law of armed conflict, unintended civilian casualties unfortunately occurred,” officials said in a statement.

An April 27, 2017 strike on an IS headquarters in the Syrian city of Raqa saw 11 civilians killed, and a May 16 strike saw two people killed.

Investigators were still looking at another 476 reports from the campaign.

The coalition conducted a total of 29,254 strikes between August 2014 and the end of March 2018 in Iraq and Syria.

Monitoring group Airwars

says the number of civilian deaths acknowledged by the US-led coalition is well below the true toll of the bombing campaign, estimating that at least 6,259 civilians have been killed.

The US-led operations to

fight IS in Iraq and Syria have largely wound down, with the jihadists ousted from more than 98 percent of the territory they once held.

The coalition’s toll of non-fighters killed dates from 2014. (AFP)

A campaign will be launched on Saturday

to clean up the sea floor at the Najwa Boulthama natural reserve.

The Supreme Council for the Environment (SCE) will conduct the clean-up in

cooperation with the United Nations (UN) Environment Programme, the Agriculture and Marine Resources Agency and the General Coastguard Directorate.

Professional divers have also volunteered to take part in the clean-up as part of SCE-led

efforts to meet the goals of the Clean Seas global campaign on marine litter.

SCE Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mohammed Mubarak bin Daina stressed the importance of conserving maritime wildlife, coral reefs and the oyster beds and

preserving the longstanding pearl heritage.

“The divers will clean up the sea floor and remove the waste, litter and banned fishing equipment which damage the coral reefs and maritime biodiversity,” said Dr. bin Daina.

Berlin

German and French officials yesterday pressed ahead with

plans to jointly develop a next-generation fighter jet, a drone and a maritime airborne warfare aircraft, saying the projects showed European unity and strength in an increasingly uncertain world.

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen and her French counterpart Florence Parly stood side by side at the ILA Berlin Air Show and hailed the ambitious Franco-German weapons push as “historic” and a key step for European autonomy.

“This is a historic agreement,” Parly told a throng of journalists, military officials and industry executives. “It shows that Europe is more than a sum of medium-sized powers, and can take its fate into its own hands and ensure its autonomy.”

The ministers signed a letter of intent to explore joint development of a maritime warfare aircraft for use from 2035, a document outlining the high-level common requirements

for a new fighter jet, and a concept of operations for a joint training and operation of a fleet of C-130J transport planes.

They also agreed to continue working on a Euro-drone project with Italy and Spain, after three European defense companies

unveiled a first full-scale model of their planned Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) drone.

The companies - Airbus, Dassault Aviation and Leonardo - said the project underscored their commitment to build a European version of an unmanned aerial

system in a world dominated by U.S. and Israeli designs.

But the biggest and most ambitious of the new projects seeks to develop a new manned fighter jet to replace Eurofighter Typhoon and Rafale warplanes beginning in 2040.

Iraq approves oil exploration near Iran and Kuwait

Baghdad

Iraq’s oil ministry said yesterday it has granted

licences to explore oil blocs in zones bordering Iran for the first time in half a century.

Licences have been issued to two Chinese companies and one Emirati firm for three blocs close to Iran and one near Kuwait, according to the ministry.

The ministry also granted

licences to exploit gas from four fields in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad.

Under Saddam Hussein, Iraq went to war with Iran between 1980 and 1988 and invaded Kuwait in 1990, before being pushed out of the latter by an American-led coalition.

Since a US-led invasion of Iraq itself in 2003, the country has been blighted by long periods of chaos, culminating

in a three-year battle against Islamic State group insurgents.

“After the decades of war and negligence, we have decided to accelerate investment in fields in border areas. These investments will contribute to oil and gas reserves and improve our economy,” said Oil Minister Jabbar al-Luaibi.

“It isn’t logical to leave these regions without investment or development -- that’s why

we invited these companies to come and invest,” added Luaibi.

Emirati company Crescent Petroleum won the licence to exploit the Khider Mai field, bordering Kuwait, while Chinese firm Geo-Jade Petroleum won two blocs close to Iran.

Crescent Petroleum will take a 13.75 percent share of profits on any oil it exploits

following the exploration phase, while Geo-Jade will receive 14.67 percent from the Naft Khana Field in Diyala and 13.75 percent on its Huwaiza concession in Missan province, in the event they move to extraction.

The fourth of the oil contracts was won by another Chinese firm, United Energy Group, which will receive 4.55 percent of profits for exploiting

the Sinbad bloc in Basra province, close to the Iranian border.

The profit-sharing deals for the contracts differ from concessions granted in 2010, which paid companies a set fee per barrel.

Crescent also bagged the licenses to exploit the four gas fields, namely Gilabat, Qumar, Khashim al Ahmar and Injana. (AFP)

Don’t be surprised if you have a desire to redecorate. The celestial energies have put you in the mood to rearrange your house a bit. Take care to not go overboard. You have a tendency to turn little projects into big ones. For now, content yourself with buying some flowering plants and perhaps new area rugs and throw pillows.

Be sure to answer all phone calls and open all letters and emails today. You’re likely to receive some interesting news. You might get word from a former boss that you’d be perfect for a new position opening up in his or her office. Or perhaps an old lover makes tentative inquiries about renewing old bonds.

Just as a watched pot never boils, so, too, do anxiously awaited checks or letters refuse to arrive in the mail. Beyond double-checking that the person or company has your correct address, there isn’t much you can do but continue to wait. Trust that it will arrive shortly, and then your financial difficulties will be behind you.

No doubt you’re feeling attractive and passionate today. Don’t be surprised if a former lover gets in touch with you to try and rekindle the old flame. The attention is flattering, to be sure, but you’re unlikely to have any desire to pursue the relationship. You’re happy with what you have right now. And as they say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

As you get older, you’re drawn more and more to spiritual matters. It isn’t so much that you’re embracing any particular religion, more that you’re quite curious about the supernatural and some of the ancient arts. Take some time to visit a library and do some reading on the subject. You might want to form a study group with other like-minded individuals.

Don’t hesitate to try something new today. If you’ve thought about joining a book club or taking a class, do it today! You’re likely to meet some interesting people and enter a new social world. You might be tentative at first, but you’ll find the group warm, friendly, and eager for your input. You’ll talk like old friends by the end of the second meeting.

You’re likely to feel optimistic and enthusiastic about life today. You might also feel especially sexy, a feeling you should definitely take advantage of! Why not plan a romantic evening with your loved one? Don’t hesitate to talk about your travel dreams over dinner. You never know, he or she just might share your dream.

Today is full of possibilities. You could fall in love at first sight, or at least meet someone who captures your interest! You should be feeling especially loving, passionate, and eager to devote yourself to a worthy cause or creative activity. Don’t expect everything to fall into place right away. You could hit a few obstacles, but the ultimate result will be worth the bumps along the way.

You could be feeling playful today. Your romantic partner will certainly appreciate your fun-loving mood. Why not plan a fun day together doing something other than your usual routine? Rather than dinner and a movie, how about lunch and a visit to a museum or art gallery? You have both been working very hard lately. Your relationship will benefit from an injection of spontaneity.

You’re looking beautiful and feeling passionate. If only your passions could be reciprocated! Even though there may not be anyone special in your life right now, that’s no reason to not treat yourself well. Go out for a nice meal or, better yet, order take-out and dine at home, complete with music, candles, and your finest china.

This could be a frustrating day in the romance department. Communication is blocked at all levels. You’re anxious to speak with your loved one, but simply can’t reach him or her. Perhaps the phone system is malfunctioning or email is acting up. You feel as though the Universe is conspiring against you. Take heart. Your partner will contact you soon enough, and your reunion will be electric! You have certainly felt better than you do today. We’ll pause here while you go and fetch the aspirin. The stomachache and headache are simply the result of recent overindulgence. Don’t worry - you’ll be fit as a fiddle by tomorrow morning. Next time someone offers you multiple helpings of food or drink, however, you might want to consider politely declining!

It’s a family affair: Britain’s royal officials say Prince

Harry has asked elder brother Prince William to be best man at his wedding next month. Kensington Palace said yesterday that William is “honored” to be playing the key role when Harry marries U.S. actress Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle on May 19.

Harry was best man when William married Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey in 2011. William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, welcomed their third child on Monday. The

baby boy’s name hasn’t yet been announced. His elder children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, are likely to star in key roles during the wedding, though officials haven’t yet announced who will be in the rest of the wedding party.

About 600 guests have been invited to watch 33-year-old Harry and Markle, who is 36, tie the knot at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor. About 2,600 neighbors, staff and specially selected members of the public will get to greet the couple outside the chapel. (AP)

brotherhood is permanent and will persist. The heroes of the peshmerga (Kurdish fighters) and the Iraqi army confronted Daesh together and shared the suffering to achieve victory,” Abadi said, referring to their joint defeat last year of the Islamic State group.

“Today we absolutely need this unity,” said Abadi who has this week been touring northern and western Iraq. (AFP)

Two people are under investigation in Germany

after being caught in possession of some 60 kilograms (130 pounds) of stolen chocolate.

Braunschweig police said Thursday a 35-year-old woman was nabbed by an alert cashier

at a supermarket on Tuesday as she checked out only a few items but had 9 kilograms (about 20 pounds) of purloined chocolate concealed under her floor-length skirt.

Upon further investigation, police found another 50 kilograms of chocolate bars, boxes of chocolates and other

confectionery stashed in five bags with her 39-year-old accomplice in a car outside.

Police say “even for those with a high affinity for chocolate the amount of candy found could not be considered for personal use.” The two are under investigation for commercial shoplifting.

Tehran

Iranian media confirmed yesterday that Abbas Edalat,

a British-Iranian scientist and peace campaigner, has been arrested for his alleged role in an “infiltration network”.

“Recently, members of an infiltration network affiliated to Britain have been arrested,” an unnamed source told the Fars news agency, which is considered close to the powerful Revolutionary Guards.

The report named Edalat, a professor of computer science and mathematics at Imperial College in London.

Britain said earlier it was “urgently seeking information” from Iran following reports of the academic’s arrest.

Edalat was detained on April 15, according to the New York-based Centre for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI).

He founded the Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran, which describes itself as “an independent campaign organisation with the purpose of opposing sanctions, foreign state interference and military intervention in Iran”.

CHRI said Edalat was arrested by the Revolutionary Guards and that he had refused to post bail on Wednesday, arguing that he was innocent and should be released unconditionally.

The group said Edalat’s home in Tehran had been raided and his computer was confiscated, as well as CDs and notebooks.

“We are urgently seeking information from the Iranian authorities following reports of the arrest of a British-Iranian dual national,” a Foreign Office

spokeswoman said.CHRI said 30 dual nationals

have been arrested in Iran, primarily on spying charges, since the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

The most high-profile British case is that of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a Thomson Reuters Foundation employee who was arrested two years ago and is serving a five-year sentence for alleged sedition.

Another Imperial College scientist, Kaveh Madani, was forced to leave Iran and quit his job as deputy head of the government’s environment agency earlier this month following pressure from hardliners.

He later said he had been placed under unauthorised surveillance from the moment he returned to Iran in September. (AFP)

Nadal eases into Barcelona quartersBarcelona

World number five Grigor Dimitrov survived

an almighty scare against outsider Malek Jaziri yesterday to edge into the Barcelona Open quarter-finals beating the Tunisian 7-5 3-6 7-6(8) following a nail-biting tiebreak.

Top seed Rafa Nadal, who has won the tournament 10 times, also reached the last eight after dispatching compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1 6-3 and claiming a record-extending 40th consecutive set on clay.

Fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta beat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-2 4-6 7-6 (8-6) in an another thrilling three-setter that had fans on the Rafael Nadal court watching the world number one turning their heads towards the action unfolding on the adjacent Court One.

Carreno Busta is ranked 11th in the world to Mannarino’s 27th but after blitzing the first set he succumbed in the second and survived a match point to take a delicately-poised tiebreak.

Jaziri, ranked 88th in the world, hit back against Dimitrov after surrendering the first set to comfortably take the second and he looked poised to cause the latest high-profile exit in Barcelona when he went 4-2 up against the second seed in the third.

Former world number one Novak Djokovic had been sent packing from the tournament the day before by Martin Klizan

while Kei Nishikori was forced to retire during his match against Garcia-Lopez due to a wrist injury.

Jaziri took a few moments out on the sidelines after experiencing discomfort with his shoulder and consulted his coach and doctor before continuing.

Bulgarian Dimitrov came back to level at 5-5 but was under pressure in the 12th game, before holding on to

force the tiebreak.Dimitrov spurned two

match points in the tiebreak and missed another chance to close out the match two points later when his shot landed just wide.

It was Jaziri’s turn to serve for the match at 8-7 but he sent a shot crashing wide under little pressure.

Dimitrov finally ended Jaziri’s resistance on his fourth match point when the

Tunisian found the net to end a match lasting two hours 49 minutes.

Klizan beat Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-1 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals and last year’s runner-up Dominic Thiem also made the last eight, beating Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia 7-6 6-2. Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas meanwhile knocked out Spaniard Albert Ramos Vinolas 6-4 7-5. (Reuters)

Wenger fan Hamilton sees his future with MercedesBaku

World champion Lewis Hamilton paid tribute to

Arsene Wenger and pledged his future to Mercedes on Thursday ahead of this weekend’s potentially critical Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The 33-year-old Briton praised the loyalty and values of the exit-bound Arsenal manager and swept aside doubts about his own future despite not yet signing a new contract. His current deal ends this year.

“I have always had great admiration for Arsene,” Gunners supporter Hamilton told reporters.

“For anyone to have commitment to a team and the loyalty which he has shown through all the ups and downs,

through outside individuals saying positives and negatives, but to stay true to your values and continue to strive for what you believe in I think has really been awesome.

“Whilst the team has not always been the most successful, I really hope that he feels great about his time. I’ve had the privilege of meeting him a couple of times. He asked me to go and train with the team, which I have not managed to do yet, but he was always really welcoming and it was cool to meet ‘our team’s’ boss.

“I’ve supported Arsenal since I was five. I want to wish him all the best. I think his future is as bright as he wants it to be, so I hope he takes the positivity out of all the great

experiences he’s had.”Hamilton insisted it is only

a matter of time before he re-commits to Mercedes.

“I’m fully committed to Mercedes,” he said. “I have every plan to be with the team for the future so it is really

about getting on with it. We were planning to do it after the last race, but we had a lot on.

“I was not really around to meet. I had one day at the factory and then I was in China and then I was in the States. We will do it in the near future for sure, but it’s not a rush thing.”

It may be no more than a coincidence but speculation over Hamilton’s future -– due to the delays in him signing and announcing his new long-term commitment to the team –- has been accompanied by a dip in form for the four-time world champion.

He has not won any of the three season-opening races, but current championship leader and fellow-four-time champion Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari on Thursday dismissed

suggestions that Hamilton’s form could help him take a fifth title.

“We’ve not had that many races so far, but I think he’s been as usual. He’s doing a very good job. Obviously, Australia was his weekend, but it ended up a bit different.

“Bahrain was ours and China, I’m not sure whose it was. I’m not looking at one guy that close or closer than others. I guess he’s doing a good job otherwise he wouldn’t be as successful as he’s been these last years.

“I hope to be number one challenger to whoever, but it’s a long year and at the moment it’s looking good, but it doesn’t mean anything, because it matters in the last three races, not the first three races.”(AFP)

Ostapenko takes winning step on clay into Stuttgart quarters

Stuttgart, Germany

Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko

continued to build for her Paris title defence with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Zarina Diyas yesterday at the Stuttgart Grand Prix.

The Latvian was joined in the quarter-finals at the Porsche arena by fifth seed Karolina Pliskova as the Czech beat Russian qualifier Veronika Kudermetova 7-6 (7/4), 6-3.

Ostapenko, ranked fifth on the WTA rankings, broke her 52nd Kazakh opponent five times as she won in just 63 minutes.

“The early matches are tough but I think I played really well today and I’m just happy with the win,” Ostapenko said.

The 20-year-old added that said she is still adjusting to life as a Grand Slam champion.

“I expected I could win a Grand Slam but not at this early age.

“I just understood a couple of months later. Of course there is more attention from everyone. I got more popular

especially in my country and almost every match I played I was the favourite.

“At the beginning of this year, it was a little bit tough, a lot of pressure but I think I got used to it; especially after the Miami final (which she lost to Sloane Stephens) I’m feeling much better.”

Pliskova hammered 15 aces as she beat Kudermetova in a match that lasted just past the 90-minute mark.

Tournament debutant and third seed Elina Svitolina advanced as Czech qualifier Marketa Vondrousova retired trailing 2-6, 6-1, 3-2 in their third-round contest.

“I always need a few weeks to switch form hardcourt to the clay,” the winner, who was a French Open quarter-finalist in 2015, said. “I am just try to east into it, it’s always difficult for me.”

American CoCo Vandeweghe extended her unexpected run of clay form, beating defending champion Laura Siegemund of Germany 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. (AFP)

Real Madrid snatch 2-1 comeback win at BayernMunich, Germany

Holders Real Madrid came from a goal down to

snatch a precious 2-1 victory at wasteful Bayern Munich on Wednesday and carry a considerable advantage into their Champions League semi-final second leg in Spain.

Real, eyeing a third straight title, needed a 44th-minute equaliser by Marcelo against the run of play to cancel out Joshua Kimmich’s opener after Bayern, chasing three trophies this season, had missed a hatful of chances.

A quick break allowed Real substitute Marco Asensio to beat Sven Ulreich with a fine effort and grab the winner in the 57th minute.

There was more bad news for Bayern with Germany defender Jerome Boateng suffering a suspected adductor muscle injury that could rule him out for the final part of the season and the World Cup.

The result was identical to last year’s quarter-final first leg between the teams before Real won the return game as well on the way to the first successful Champions League title defence.

“We are satisfied with the result but this does not count for much,” Real coach Zinedine Zidane told reporters. “You can never feel absolutely safe in football.

“We won tonight and I think we played well, we got a good result after a hard game.”

Liverpool crushed AS Roma 5-2 in the other semi-final first leg on Tuesday.

Bayern, who had lost only one of their last 22 home games in the competition, had only themselves to blame and were punished for their profligacy.

They almost scored after 25 seconds when Real defender Dani Carvajal failed to clear properly in a furious and physical start to the match. (Reuters)

Stockholm

Ending weeks of speculation, the Swedish football

federation announced yesterday that star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who quit the national squad in 2016, will not make a comeback for the World Cup in Russia.

“I spoke with Zlatan on Tuesday. He said that he has not changed his mind regarding the national squad,” the managing director of the national squad, Lars Richt, said in a statement after the player dropped numerous hints of a possible return.

“It’s a no,” Richt added. In an appearance on ABC

television’s late night Jimmy Kimmel show on April 18, the new star of LA Galaxy teased fans that he may come out of retirement to play in Russia.

Known for his swagger, Zlatan said “it wouldn’t be a World Cup” if he didn’t play, adding: “I’m going to the World Cup, yes.”

The 36-year-old who last played at a World Cup with Sweden in 2006, retired from the Swedish team after the 2016 European Championship.

He said last month he wanted

to concentrate on settling into his new life in Major League Soccer before thinking about the World Cup.

Following an injury-blighted stay at Manchester United, the father of two became the latest in a long line of ageing stars to leave European football for the United States.

The 6ft 4ins (1.95m) striker tweeted on April 15: “The chance of me playing in the World Cup is skyhöga (sky high).”

He later told Swedish media that “high odds -- that doesn’t

mean it’s going to happen.”Ibrahimovic had just weeks

earlier become a global brand ambassador for Swedish betting company Bethard, prompting some Swedish commentators to lament that his World Cup teasing was nothing more than an advertising gimmick.

“It feels like the whole thing was just aimed at building up his brand in the US and it even seemed at times like he thought it was funny,” Daniel Nannskog, a commentator for Swedish public broadcaster SVT, said. (AFP)

Barcelona set for title partyBarcelona

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said in February

he was “in a hurry” to wrap up the Liga title and his side will almost certainly get to celebrate a 25th league crown at last when they play at Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday.

Barca need a draw against Clarence Seedorf’s struggling side to clinch the title and the trophy could even be theirs before they kick off if Real Madrid fail to beat Leganes on Saturday and Atletico Madrid are unable to win at Alaves four hours before Barca’s game starts.

The Catalans have led from the front this season, topping the table in week two, and no-one can begrudge them a

title which they have looked certain to win since they beat Real Madrid 3-0 on Dec. 23, marching 14 points clear of their arch- rivals and nine ahead of Atletico.

Barca’s surprise draws against Getafe and Espanyol briefly offered Atletico hope of chasing down Valverde’s side when they closed the gap to five points ahead of a top-of-the-table clash in March, but a superb free kick from Lionel Messi gave Barca a 1-0 win to lift them eight points ahead.

They never looked back and are still unbeaten in the league, five games from becoming the first team since Real Madrid in 1932 to finish a La Liga campaign undefeated and the

only side to do so since the league was expanded to more than 10 teams.

The title win would also complete the club’s seventh double after they hammered Sevilla 5-0 in the King’s Cup final on Saturday, an utterly dominant victory which went some way towards healing the wounds from their shock Champions League elimination by AS Roma.

While Barca are preparing for a title party at Riazor, Deportivo might end up feeling like they are at a funeral as the Galicians will be relegated back to Spain’s second tier for the first time since 2014 if they do not beat Barca and Levante win at Sevilla on Friday. (Reuters)

Thomas De Gendt wins Romandie stage two

Zurich

Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) added to his portfolio of breakaway

wins on stage 2 of the Tour de Romandie, going clear in the opening kilometres with four others before dropping them all in turn to celebrate a solo victory in Yverdon-les-Bains.

Sonny Colbrelli, whose Bahrain-Merida teammates had led a panicked chase, took second place from the bunch, which came in just over two minutes down, while Samuel Dumoulin (AG2R La Mondiale) finished third.

De Gendt, one of a dying breed of breakaway specialists, once again showed himself to be adroit in picking out the right days and moves. Thursday’s 174km trip from Delémont to Yverdon-les-Bains was, on paper, the only real chance for the sprinters at the Tour de Romandie, but an upset was on the cards when the Belgian went clear on the early climb of the Col des Rangiers with Nathan Brown (EF-Drapac), Andrey Grivko (Astana), and Matteo Fabbro (Katusha), and - crucially - his own teammate Victor Campenaerts.

As the roads undulated over the subsequent 80 kilometres, the gap back to the peloton yawned out to nearly eight minutes, and once up and over the second-category Col des Etroits - where Grivko was dislodged - they took to the

undulating 35km finishing circuit with a lead of five minutes. For reference, De Gendt had predicted at the start of the day that two minutes might suffice at that point.

After burying himself for his teammate, Campenaerts was soon dropped, while De Gendt made use of the second of three uncategorised climbs to drop Brown with 25km remaining.

From there, with the gap still at well over four minutes, victory was pretty much a formality, though it remained to be seen if the leader’s jersey would change hands. De Gendt had started the day just over three minutes down on Primoz Roglic’s (LottoNL-Jumbo) overall lead and the GC teams committed riders to the cause in the latter stages, though the greater threat was probably Brown, who’d started the day just 26 seconds down. In the end, the American was caught in the final kilometre.

Roglic, therefore, retains the yellow jersey ahead of Friday’s stage 3 time trial, with little change at the top of the standings. Rohan Dennis (BMC) is tied for time with the Slovenian, with Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) third at four seconds. The only change to the top 10 saw Sky’s Jonathan Castroviejo drop out, and Pierre Rolland (EF-Drapac), Richie Porte (BMC), and Jose Goncalves (Katusha-Alpecin) all move one spot up. (cyclingnews)

Wilder offers Joshua $50 million for heavyweight mega-fightLos Angeles

Deontay Wilder told Anthony Joshua “the money’s in the bag” as prospects

rose Wednesday of a blockbuster world title unification bout between the unbeaten heavyweights.

In a Twitter video posted Wednesday, America’s World Boxing Council world champion Wilder backed up reports that his camp had emailed Britain’s Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn an offer of a minimum of $50 million.

“I’ve got something special for you,” Wilder tells Joshua in the video. “By the way, all the money is in the bag. I expect you’ll be a man of your word.”

Joshua, who unified the World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Organization heavyweight titles by out-pointing New Zealand’s Joseph Parker on March 31, had already been recorded saying he’d “take $50 million up front” to fight Wilder.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Wilder promoter Lou DiBella had confirmed the offer for a fight in the United States sometime between September and December.

“We’ll see how badly he wants the fight,” DiBella told the newspaper. “Anthony Joshua has said he’d accept this offer. If Eddie Hearn is not looking to stop it from happening, they now have an extraordinary offer to consider.”

ESPN reported that both camps had

confirmed the offer, adding that it was for one fight, with no rematch clause, and would have to be the next bout for each fighter.

The winner of a Joshua-Wilder bout would be the first man to hold all four major heavyweight titles simultaneously, and Joshua told the BBC this month that he’d rather face Wilder than Russian Alexander Povetkin, the WBA mandatory challenger.

Joshua, 28, won his first world title in 2016 and has made five defenses, taking his record to 21-0 with 20 knockouts.

Wilder, 32, improved to 40-0 with 39 knockouts when he knocked out previously unbeaten Cuban Luis Ortiz in the 10th round in Brooklyn, New York, on March 3. (AFP)

Ricciardo: No Ferrari pre-contract agreement

Baku

Daniel Ricciardo has dismissed media

speculation of a pre-agreement with Ferrari that could see him switch from Red Bull to the Italian Formula One team next season.

The Australian has only talked about his future with Red Bull, he told reporters in Baku yesterday ahead of Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

“I’m aware of other reports, but there hasn’t been anything else, so they’re not true,” said Ricciardo, winner in China two weeks ago and of last year’s chaotic Baku race.

Asked specifically about reports of a pre-agreement with Ferrari for an exclusive negotiating period, the 28-year-old replied: “That’s not true”.

He is out of contract at the end of the season, as is Kimi Raikkonen, who partners four-times world champion Sebastian Vettel — Ricciardo’s previous Red Bull team mate — at Ferrari.

Ricciardo’s next move is a hot topic in the paddock, with the Australian showing signs of “contract fatigue” in the face of constant questions.

He has also been linked to Mercedes as a possible team mate for Britain’s four-times world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Championship dreamThe Perth-born driver said he would not accept a subservient role at any team and expected clarity and fairness.

Raikkonen, the 2007 world champion, has played a back-up role to Vettel at Ferrari, who faced criticism after China for a strategy that favoured the German over the Finn.

“I wouldn’t want to go somewhere where I didn’t feel I had a chance,” Ricciardo said.

“At the moment what I’m chasing is to try and be world champion. That’s my goal, my dream, something I really believe I’m capable of.

“So if someone said ‘we’ll let you come here but you

can’t do this’, that’s not an attractive option to me. At Red Bull there’s always been really good clarity and I would say fairness, since 2014, since I’ve been there.”

Being in a team with Hamilton would be a “good challenge”, he added.

Asked whether he was curious to see whether the “grass was greener” elsewhere, Ricciardo said his decision would be based on facts.

“I wouldn’t go somewhere else just for a change,” he said, recognizing also that he felt lingering loyalty to Red Bull who have said they want a decision by the August break.

“I guess I don’t really fear not having a seat next year so I don’t feel that I need to sign something tomorrow or I will have nothing,” Ricciardo said.

“So I guess for that reason I feel like I can see until the summer what’s happening. If nothing has happened since then...if it’s only then Red Bull, then that’s where I am.” (Reuters)© GRAPHIC NEWSSource: FIA DRS: Drag Reduction System

Raikkonen: No problem with Ferrari strategyBaku

Kimi Raikkonen says there is no problem between him

and Ferrari after its strategy calls appeared to compromise his race at the expense of teammate Sebastian Vettel in China.

After Mercedes pulled off the undercut on pole-sitter Vettel with Valtteri Bottas, who also got past Raikkonen at the first corner in the Chinese Grand Prix, Ferrari appeared to keep the Finnish driver out on track in an attempt to block Bottas and allow Vettel a chance to retake the lead.

Raikkonen effectively dropped from third place to sixth place after his pit stop, behind Lewis Hamilton and both Red Bull drivers, at the Shanghai International Circuit only to see the race turned on its head by a safety car period which enabled the Ferrari driver to jump up to third place behind winner Daniel Ricciardo and Bottas.

With Ferrari’s blushes avoided with Raikkonen in third, the Finnish driver has shrugged off suggestions he was unfairly treated by the Italian manufacturer’s race strategy.

“Obviously I want to get the best result, that’s all I’m interested in, and after the race it’s always easy to say we should have done this or that,” Raikkonen said. “Even when

you win races you still have things you can do better, it’s the never ending story in Formula 1, it’s what’s interesting. My only interest, as I said before, is to get the best possible result.

“During the race they [Ferrari] have all the data and make the decisions accordingly. Obviously we were not in the best position after the pit stops but the end result was okay. Third was fine but of course I want better results.”

Raikkonen accepted Ferrari strategy ultimately came down to qualifying order, with Vettel outqualifying his teammate to take pole position in China, and has hit back at critics questioning Ferrari’s tactics.

“It depends where we qualify and who’s ahead and who’s behind. It’s very clear, straightforward and simple,” he said. “As long as I remember it’s been that way in any team I’ve been.

“Unfortunately a lot of people try to make it very complicated and make stories out of not such big things. As a team we always try to get the best results.

“Obviously after the race it’s always easy to say we should have done this or that. Unfortunately we don’t have the tools to start by the end of the race and then go back to the middle of the race and change things.” (crash.net)
