Minister gives Telecom ‘a feather in the cap’

Infinitum Plus was unveiled by Informa-tion and Communication Technology Minister Joel Kaapanda at a ceremony attended by a number of MPs, business-men, CEOs of parastatals, senior govern-ment officials, ICT-savvy individuals and media representatives in Windhoek on 27 February 2009.

Using labels to route data packets across the Internet, MPLS has become popular worldwide, particularly for bandwidth-intensive applications, thanks to its ability to bridge legacy network technologies (i.e., ATM and frame relay) and multiple infrastructure types (Ethernet, DSL, fibre

feather in the cap,” he said.

The Infinitum Plus solution enables Telecom Namibia to seamlessly connect customers to their headquarters, branch offices, remote users and business partners – all in a secure, consistent and robust network environment.

“We’re providing a solution that’s optimised for high availability use in a VPN environment,” said Armando Perny, Senior Manager: Product R&D at Telecom Namibia. “This is a huge opportunity for our company to offer cost-effective and robust solutions to existing customers and open up new solutions for new customers,” Perny added.

“Telecom Namibia fills the gaps in using ICT technologies by offering services on a customised solution basis. The corporate business will want to focus on its core business and Telecom Namibia will look after the infrastructure,” explains Chrissie Fendler, an ICT Network Solution Archi-tect at Telecom Namibia.

Telecom Namibia recently unveiled Infinitum Plus, an Internet Pro-tocol (IP) Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) enabled Wide Area Network (WAN) solution that offers multi-site businesses more band-width for the dollar, faster application deployment, lower network op-erating costs, and more access options than traditional WAN services.

“Creating new generation products and services and delivering those great com-munications experiences - that is our mission, our commitment, and our future,” the company’s board chairman Joseph Iita, said at the launch of Infinitum Plus.

In his speech, Minister Kaapanda applauded the company for its commit-ment to provide Namibia and its citizens with a world-class telecommunication infrastructure as well as new generation products and solutions. “[You] deserve a

The lab, the first in Namibia and second in the region after South Africa, has state-of-the-art Cisco networking equipment that tests, develops and demonstrates specific network solu-tions as well as technologies and services which forms part of Telecom Namibia’s broad ICT product portfolio.

Some of the access technologies the lab can showcase are ADSL, WiMAX, CDMA/ 1X/EVDO, ISDN, TDM, MetroE, leased line and E1.

“This fully functional lab is unequalled within Namibia,” says Coenraad Coetzee, General Manager of ICT and Corporate Busi-ness Solutions at Telecom Namibia.

“The facility is used for troubleshooting certain scenarios, testing software upgrades, process-prove network changes before those changes are done in the life environment, a learning tool for Telecom Namibia employees and customer IT personnel in the framework of SLA agreements and to be hired to the public on request,” Coenraad explained further.

The training of OPM Systems Administrators started on 16 October 2008 and ends on 17 April 2009. The training includes hands-on training on how to manage their Internet Protocol (IP) network involving taking care of software, switches, firewalls, network monitoring and access control, among others.

Telecom Namibia’s ICT Network Solutions Architect in charge of the training programme, Chrissie Fendler said they offer the OPM staff 138-hours over-the-shoulder training every Wednes-days and Fridays.

“I’ve structured the training contents close to the Cisco CCNA to

Telecom's Chrissie Fendler (left), Ezra Shilongo and Doors Brandt (seated), with

the IT trainees from the Office of the Prime Minister.

enable them to take good charge of their network,” Fendler said.

Telecom Namibia won the tender last year to revamp the OPM’s entire core Internet Protocol (IP) network equipment and to of-fer training on how to handle the system.

“In fact, I learnt how to work with the Cisco equipment. It’s a good thing because the lab has the same equipment as the one we use at work,” said Lucy Abraham.

Another administrator Hentie von Wielligh said he had enjoyed both the theoretical and practical sessions. “It was interesting because Telecom Namibia has excellent facilities and equipment in the lab,” Wielligh said.

The OPM’s Director of Networking and Technical Support Erastus Amutenya said, “The lab environment is very conducive for training, neat and has the latest equipment tailor-made for training,” Amutenya said.

“Very good now-get-to-the-future-technology and OASYS has a real competing chance to offer these products to the clients in need of 1st World technology in communication.”

“It’s definitely well presented. Good products like this definitely require good service.”

“The new service was well presented to the audience at the launch. All in all, it’s an im-pressive service and we hope to make use of the Infinitum Plus service in the near future.”

“Quite interesting and we hope that all which was demonstrated with regard to Infinitum Plus by Telecom Namibia will become a reality and propel Namibia onto the super information highway.”

“This is a step in the right direction. I’m glad to see that we’re aligning with the global trends. I’m really impressed and the presentation was also very good.”

Washington Munjanga ICT Infrastructure Engineer CENORED

“One reason why CENORED chose this service is to cut cost, as there is no payment for distance. For instance, a connection between Okakarara and Otjiwarongo costs the same as the one between Otji-warongo and Khorixas. CENORED was therefore forking out lots of money on distance alone with the old technology. With this latest technology one can also super-im-pose voice on the same data net-work, rendering inter-office calls free. We applied for this corporate technology in September 2008, immediately cutting on downtime and improving the speed of con-nection for our branch office users to our business systems at head office in Otjiwarongo. The imple-mentation of VPN has facilitated this connectivity and boosted the moral of our users in our regional offices.”

Gino Brinkmann IT ClerkEmployment Equity Commission

“We applied during the last quar-ter of 2008 through the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare. Before the installation of Infinitum Plus we had problems with our rout-ers and configuration but that has been all sorted out now. We are in the process of implementing a new case management system and Infinitum Plus would help streamline this system effectively. This solution helps us to link up with other offices of the ministry and increases the sharing of in-formation considerably with great ease and convenience. It’s no more a thing of sending a letter or going to the regional offices, but simply opening up the company profile on the system and attend-ing to every complaint or query registered on there.”

Elizabeth Cline Deputy Director: Management Services and Administration Office of the Ombudsman

“We contacted Telecom Namibia to provide us with network con-nectivity solutions to link our two regional offices to the computer network at the head office in Wind-hoek and Infinitum Plus was the solution which was recommend-ed. The Office of the Ombudsman operates on an integrated comput-erised case management system and it is therefore imperative that the regional offices should be able to log onto the system. Previously, the regions had to gain access to the case management system by dialling to a modem. This was not only expensive but blocked the line for incoming calls, while only one staff member could have ac-cess at a time. However, the new solution from Telecom Namibia would enable all staff to log di-rectly onto the network on a 24/7 basis. If improving your effective-ness is vital to your business, In-finitum Plus helps you to achieve just that.”

Erben /Uirab Network Administartor Agribank

“What attracted Agribank the most are the beneficial aspects of im-proved packet forwarding perfor-mance in the IP/MPLS VPN net-work, support of quality of service as well as network scalability, reli-ability and speed of data transfer. We therefore needed the solution because the current 128 kbps point-to-point connection to our branch offices could not sustain the bank’s data transfer. Now we have an IP/MPLS 256 kbps. With our centralised network, the ac-quisition of IP/MPLS VPN has im-proved our network and enabled us to have faster data access to head office and assist us to serve our customers in the shortest pos-sible time. Bandwidth is core to any network and currently the IP/MPLS VPN solution is the market tool to streamline your business in terms of network performance. So, for those businesses that are still not on board this efficient technol-ogy, make the move now to im-prove your business efficiency.”
