I hope everyone is surviving this whole pandemic thing I know it has not been easy for
anyone. Its been like a roller coaster ride, the numbers are up then they are down then
they are up again. You get all kinds of conflicting information as to what is the best way
to protect yourself. The way it looks our membership (at least in Tennessee) has been
doing really well. We have had very few members getting infected and the ones that have
gotten infected beat the virus. Our thoughts and prayers go out to anyone that has or will
get the virus. I know it is getting a little hard to handle for Jan and I. We are used to be-
ing out traveling by this time in the year. So far, we have been “about nowhere”. It looks
like we may get to start our move back toward normal very soon. I don’t expect every-
thing to be back to normal right away but at least we are headed in that direction.
I see most of our chapters are getting back to having their gatherings which means we
can get back to visiting and chasing plaques. If you want to check out the latest rules for
chasing the plaques go to our web site, the rules are listed there. Also the mileage chart
has been updated and posted on the web site. It would be a good idea to contact the
chapter you want to visit and make sure they are at the same location and that they have
room for visitors. Some chapters have lost their meeting places and are meeting at some
homes right now, so be sure and check in before you head out on the road. It may save
you a trip to the wrong location and some chapters may need to know who is coming so
they have enough room and seating for everyone.
Most of the rallies have been cancelled, so like gatherings, before you head out to a rally
double check and make sure it is still on. I know the Louisiana Rally had been postponed
and now is cancelled. It is starting to look like the one thing we will have left to do this
summer will be to ride. What a terrible thing to have to do this summer (ride). Let’s see if
we can plan some rides and let all the other chapters know where and when you are going. This is an incredi-
bly good time to share rides and get to know the other members in Tennessee. You know, the best way I can
think of to share your ride information is through Group Works. You can send your ride information out to
every chapter with very little effort. If anyone needs help learning a little about Group Works let me know
and I will see what we can do.
We are working extremely hard setting up our Spring Fling for 2021. We are very close to having everything
ready to go. We should have the registration form ready very soon after all the papers are signed, and every-
thing is set in stone. I know it is a little early, but I would like the chapters and individuals to be thinking
about how you would like to volunteer to help at Spring Fling 2021. We have the time to get everything set
up and if you volunteer for an area you have plenty time to plan.
The last I have to say this month is let’s get out and ride. Let’s be smart about how we get out and ride. Be-
fore you head out for a nice quiet ride check out the area you are going to. There are sites on the internet
where you can see how the COVID-19 is affecting the different areas of the state. There are some states that
are backing up and making you do a fourteen-day quarantine before entering their state. One more thing is
the protests please check the status of the demonstrations in the area you are going. We do not want to get
caught up in a bad situation while on a ride.
Plan ahead, be safe and have fun.

Connie and I hope all Tennessee Chapter Members are doing well. Apparently this COVID-19 is still impacting Chapter Meetings and Rallies,. Hopefully this pandemic will be over soon and all be well
and Chapters can go back to have regular meetings and District can have their rallies and National will have
a great Wing Ding in Springfield Missouri in 2021.
Several Chapters have been doing Zoom Call Meetings, others have figured out riding a Gold Wing is prac-
ticing safe social distancing and enjoying fun and fellowship with chapter mem bers .Also, they even prac-
ticed safe social distancing while at their favorite ICE CREAM PARLOR!!
Everyone be safe and enjoy riding!!!!
See you soon

Ready to get back to visiting That’s right we know everyone is ready for things to get back to normal.
We have seen where some are having gatherings we are going to check with the restaurant where Chapter A meets tomorrow and hopefully we can have a gathering this Month. We know some have just shut down totally. Please let us know and we can help spread the word. Be sure and watch your emails and please pass them on to your members. Also call the new members We made a contact this week and a fellow was looking for some people to ride with. He is coming to visit with us. Also check your bike over real good we had some issues with our clutch and had them flushed out. All is well now. Be sure and check your GWRRA membership due dates several are coming up for renewal. Summer is in high gear finally, still trying to get out and around. Not a lot of motorcycle activities
due to the ongoing situation we all have had to deal with. Many chapters are finally scheduling
some rides. Those couples who have chapter couples are out chasing the couple of the year
plaque. Lots of fun, good way to visit and get to know some of your Goldwing family. Many
chapters didn't announce a chapter couple this year. I would encourage all you chapter direc-
tors and assistant chapter directors to dig into your Goldwing handbook and review the couple
of the year selection process. Pick some timelines and go ahead and plan your 2021 selection
for your chapter couple. Consult with other chapter directors and previous chapter couples. Se-
lect the date of your selection and make it happen. This should be towards the end of the year
so you can announce your new chapter couple at your Christmas party. Give yourself plenty of
time to order your couple of the year packets to present to your couple. Please feel free to con-
tact us for any assistance, good luck and enjoy your GWRRA experience.

July 2020 District Couple of the Year Article
Loretta & I have all kinds of plans of what we want to do during our time as the TN District 2020-2021 Couple of the Year. Our plans were to get around and visit the chapters, attend as many rallies in our surrounding area as possible, be the ambassadors for TN and the Couple of the Year Program, etc. Obviously the Covid-19 pandemic has put a significant dent in those plans. This whole year, as far as district rallies, AND Wing Ding itself, is concerned, has been really messed up, with so many of the rallies being cancelled. For safety reasons, of course it was the right call to cancel them, but it sure put a damper in a lot of members’ plans, including ours. But we WILL do whatever we can/are able.
We’ve been able to do a couple chapter visitations, I mentioned last month about attending the TN-T, Knoxville gathering and their ride, and this month we were able to visit the gatherings of TN-B, Knox-ville and also TN-A2, Maryville. So as things are starting to settle down a little, more of the chapters are trying to get back to a somewhat “normal” stance. We will continue to monitor notifications, either on Groupworks or District/chapter websites, or emails, to watch for updates on chapter gathering status, and try to work our plans out. I won’t try to promise, if or when, but we WILL try our best to get at least one visit in to all or as many of the chapters as possible.
As a current District Couple of the Year, and since we have attended so many of the surrounding District rallies over the years, and are well known by their District Teams, we get asked to participate in a lot of their usual rally activities. Earlier this year we served as judges for the SC District Couple of the Year selection, and we just finished serving as judges for the LA District Couple of the Year selection, this past Friday, June 19th. As seems to be becoming the norm under our restrictions, it was done via a Zoom Call. It’s not great, and we miss the actual mix-and-mingle part that normally goes on, sitting down and meeting the couples, etc., but at least it allows a selection to be done and a couple to be select-ed. We don’t know if we’ll be asked for any others, but if we do, I’ll keep reporting it.
I ask that Chapter Directors make a mental note to keep us informed about their chapter gatherings so we can see about making plans to attend if possible. We won’t always be able to, with our other com-mitments, but it will help us in our planning if we know. And we’d also like to know if your chapter has a Couple (if not, why not?), and a little about them, if you can. We’d like to get a better handle on the Chapter Couple of the Year program within the TN District chapters. It is a wonderful program, such an easy but great way to thank and honor a chapter couple that has participated and contributed to the chap-ter. We KNOW that there are couples like that in every chapter, so there shouldn’t be any reason for a chapter NOT to have a couple, and it is so very simple to pick a couple and let them know how much their support has meant to the chapter. We’d love to talk with you about the program, and the wonderful way it can help the chapter. Let’s get a dialog going!

Preparing for upcoming events
As many Chapters are starting their gatherings back, and planning events that include riding, eating, and
spending time together we need to remember a few things. Many of our participants are in the “at risk” group
when it comes to Covid 19. Help make them feel comfortable in the group settings. Some will want to wear
masks, and some will not. Whether someone wears a mask or does not wear a mask is a personal decision in
most cases and no one should be pressured one way or the other. I have heard some say they are not going to
wear a mask, although some of you would really look better with one on. That is ok, some say they would not
go anywhere without one on and that is ok also. Let’s work on welcoming everyone back to our gatherings
and events, with or without masks. Let’s make sure we have some of the items now considered essential for
events, such as hand sanitizer and social distancing protocols.
Want to make mask fun, instead of a crazy hat contest, maybe we need a crazy mask contest. Perhaps a Best
Dressed Chapter mask contest, or perhaps a contest to decide if someone looks better with or without a
mask, and yes, I have some of you in mind for that one. Let’s just all work together to make everyone feel
comfortable as we start to get back together again.

Can you believe July is just around the corner? Half of the year is already gone. Very few chapters have
been able to get out and do things. But they are slowly starting to gather again and do rides.
Question for you, what do you think about when you say the word Motorist Awareness? The first thing
that the most of us think about is the other person, the other vehicle. Let's consider us in this Motorist
Awareness. We're just as important. If you're driving 60 mph and you look away for 3 seconds, which
is not much. You can look at a restaurant, an old show car going down the road, somebody walking
down the road... That's all it takes is 3 seconds to look at something like that and you've covered 180
feet. Doesn't seem like much, but if you're approaching another intersection or you have another motor-
cycle in front of you and he brakes or slows a little bit, you're going to be all over it. Distractive driv-
ing, is that what that would be? Pretty sure it would be. You have got to be aware of what you're doing
at all times. Unfortunately it's more about us being aware, than it is the other vehicles. We do not have
the luxury of all of the protection of other vehicles, like cars and trucks. So if you hit something more
than likely you're going to pay a pretty heavy price physically. Not to speak of the cost involved of tear-
ing up your bike. It's so important to keep your mind on what's going on. Stay alert and stay hydrated
when it's hot. The heat can really play with your mind and cause you to lose your focus. If you start get-
ting too hot, pull off the road, rest, cool down and especially get something to drink. Preferably water.
So it's not just always about the other vehicles. It's about us as well. Just try to remember, you're the
person in charge of your vehicle. Whether you're sitting there listening to music, fumbling around with
the radio or your sunglasses, the hood on your helmet or taking a drink of water, you could be putting
yourself in major danger if you're not paying attention. Just think if that were four or five seconds in-
stead of three, more than likely you would not have time to correct your situation before you could have
a collision. Think safe, be safe, ride safe and stay hydrated. You're the captain of your ship, in this case
your motorcycle. Pay attention to what you're doing. Dress like it's your last ride. Have all the gear all
the time...

Hello July 2020!!! We are halfway through the year and it has been a different year for sure. Extreme weather, pandemic, shutdown, extreme violence and an attempt to remove our history as if it will correct all the wrongs. What’s next, I am expecting HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey to show up. Sorry for the rant. I think it is time for level heads and common sense to make a comeback.
As we celebrate the 4th of July lets remember our history and the men and women who gave up their
lives not only for our freedom but that of many other countries also. To try to deny or change history by tearing down statues and defacing cemeteries is wrong. I guess what is needed is a strong history lesson concerning our ancestors.
As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate can-
not drive out hate: only love can do that.” Also, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience,
but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” I believe it is time we stand together, arm in arm, hand in hand, firm against the violence and hatred,
bow our heads and pray to our God for healing in our land. All it takes for evil to abound is for good men and women to do nothing.
I know this has little to do with riding but is what has been on my mind. Be safe and let’s get out and
enjoy each others company.

Rider Educators
July message from your District Educator
I would like to start off by thanking all the riders and co-riders who participated in the ARC/TRC Class held
in Maryville on May 30. I would like to thank the Blount County Sheriff’s Office Training Center and the 911
Center for setting everything up for us. The 911 Center had a person at the door who signed us in and took our
temperature, and the Training Center was set up so we were spaced our 6 foot distance. We also had our hand
sanitizers, Sanitary wipes and masks for those who wanted them. We had 12 bikes in the ARC and 11 bikes in
the TRC. It was a great turn out. Both classes did a great job. It did get rather hot on the range but we had pro-
vided water and took some much needed breaks. We had participants from chapter A2, C2, O, V, and T along
with 4 from Kentucky and a couple from Maryland. Thanks to Alvin Nelson, Dennis Peterson, Jerry Keys, and
Curtis Palmore and Dominick Desipeto from Florida, for instructing the ARC. Thanks to Clayton Massey for
helping me with the TRC Class.
The district is working with Chapter Z and putting together a TRC Class in Columbia for October 24, 2020.
Thanks to Charlie and Pam for working with us to put this class together. The classroom portion will be held at
204 Sewanee Circle, and the range portion will be held at Maury Hills Church. The classroom portion will begin
at 8:30 AM Central time. The fee for the class is $25.00 per bike, one up or two up. The registration form will
be attached to this months newsletter. Any Questions feel free to contact me at 865-661-9121 or e mail me at
tn.gw.de2019, or contact Charlie Huffman at 931-215-1650.
Medic First Aid is still on hold. Received a notice that they were looking at setting up training program possibly
at the end of the month. Will be interesting to see what guidelines they come up with. They have granted a
grace period for those who are in the levels program for MFA. If you are about to expire any time within Janu-
ary 2020 through December 2020 it will not be counted as being expired. This is only for those who expire in
2020. If you were already expired prior to 2020 then it does not cover you. We will work with you to help get
any training you need. Either through on line classes through GW University, or set up classes following the
social distance guidelines.

Well, it is officially summer, but we are still in the throes of dealing with COVID-19. Some of the re-
strictions imposed on us have been lifted but the virus is still active in our state. Unfortunately, we still have
the “stay at home” for the ‘at-risk’ group which includes the elderly and those with underlying medical con-
ditions. Since we are still restricted in what we can do, GWRRA University is extending online classes for
yet another month.
The classes offered for July are:
July 7 ~ 3:00pm & 6:00pm GWRRA Module 301-02 More Members ~ Recruitment basics. The importance of creating & implementing a recruitment plan.
July 8 ~ 3:00pm & 6:00pm GWRRA Module 106-02 How Aging Affects Riders ~ Mature riders. The effects of aging on riders.
July 14 ~ 3:00pm & 6:00 pm Co-Rider Seminar 101-02 ~ Information and tips for the co-rider. This semi-nar is part of the Levels program. This class will be entered into the Rider Ed database when completed.
July 15 ~ 3:00pm & 6:00pm GWRRA Module 102-02 Riding in the Heat ~ All about riding in the heat; what to carry, how to dress and how to respond to heat related emergencies.
July 21 ~ 3:00pm & 6:00pm GWRRA Module Planning a Chapter Event 204-02 ~ A better understanding of the steps involved in putting together a successful event.
July 22 ~ 3:00pm & 6:00pm Team Riding Seminar 103-04 ~ To educate & inform Members about the benefits of team riding.
July 27 ~ 3:00pm & 6:00pm GWRRA Module 202-04 ~ How to retain Members. To understand that re-tention is strategy rather than outcome.
July 28 ~ 3:00pm & 6:00pm GWRRA Module 202-04 Retention is Important ~ How to retain Members. To understand that retention is strategy rather than an outcome.
Now that you know the classes offered and the schedule, go ahead and sign up before you forget (and put it on your calendar!).
