If you want to tell somebody to do something in French, you need to use a form called the imperative.

As well as in the last exercise, you have already met the imperative in these classroom instructions:

Ecoute!Regarde!Ferme ton cahier!

If you are talking to one other person who is the same age or younger, you use the tu form of the imperative, just as you would use the tu form of the verb when talking to them.

With regular –er verbs the tu form always ends in –es.

E.g Tu manges une pomme. You are eating an apple.

To make the imperative, and turn the sentence into a command, simply take off the tu from the beginning, and the –s from the ending.

E.g. Mange une pomme! Eat an apple!

This works with other –er verbs that are irregular too.

E.g. Tu vas à l’école. You are going to school.Va à l’école! Go to school!

R With other verbs, there is no need to take off the –s, so they are even easier.

Tu fais la vaisselle. You are doing the washing-up.Fais la vaisselle! Do the washing-up!

If you are talking to more than one person, or to an adult, then you need to make the vous form of the verb into an imperative. This is simple, whatever kind of verb you are using! Just take off the vous from the beginning.

E.g. Vous prenez la deuxième rue à gauche.You are taking the second road on the left.Prenez la deuxième rue à gauche.Take the second road on the left.

R If you want to tell someone not to do something, all you need to do is make the imperative negative.

This is quite easy. Just put ne and pas on either side of the verb. Don’t forget to change ne to n’ before a vowel or silent h.

Change the following imperatives to the negative form. Make sure you know what they all mean. Which are in the tu form, and which are in the vous form?

R Sometimes you will have to read something which seems to be full of words you don’t understand. Here are some tips for dealing with harder texts.

2) Don’t panic! There is no need to understand every single word!

4) Scan the text for words you do know, and for words which are similar in English. This might give you an idea of what it is about. You could underline these words to make them stand out.

5) Try to decide which words are key words, i.e. those which are most important in the text. If you don’t understand them, use a dictionary to help you, but don’t get carried away – just concentrate on the words which seem most important.

3) What kind of a text is it? Where is it from? Who is it written for? This might help your understanding.

1) If you have to answer any questions on the text, always read these first so that you know what to look out for.

You have already learnt a bit about effective dictionary use.Another useful dictionary skill is the ability to look words up fast!This usually depends on how well you know the order of the letters in the alphabet.

Here’s a way of practising:

1 Choose ten unknown French words from the dictionary that all start with the same letter. Write them down, taking care not to put them in alphabetical order.

2 Now time your partner. How long does it take him or her to look up all ten words and note the meaning of each?

3 Swap over. Now you look up your partner’s ten words. Can you do it any faster?
