In Unit 7 we studied the “direct object pronouns” thatrefer to people (le, la, les, las).

Marta knows Pedro. Marta knows Antón and Ricardo.Pedro knows Marta. Pedro knows Sara and Teresa. Marta knows him. Marta knows them.Pedro knows her. Pedro knows them.

Marta conoce a Pedro. Marta conoce a Antón and Ricardo.Pedro conoce a Marta. Pedro conoce a Sara and Teresa.

Marta le* conoce. Marta les conoce.Pedro la conoce. Pedro las conoce.

In this unit, we will be studying the direct object that ONLY refers to a thing or things: lo, la, los, las.

Marta come carne. Marta eats meat.Pedro come pan. Pedro eats bread.

RDirect object pronouns (lo, la, los, las) 2

The direct object pronouns in Spanish that refer to a thing or things are:

Masculine singular lo (it) Masculine plural los (them)

Feminine singular la (it) Feminine plural las (them)

The direct object pronouns are used in place of the object to avoid repetition.

Here is a good trick to find out what the direct object is:make the sentence into a question using “what?”.

Marta eats meat. Marta eats what? Marta eats meat.

Marta eats apples – Marta eats them. Pedro eats cakes – Pedro eats them.

Normally, in Spanish the pronouns come before the verb:

Marta come manzanas – Marta las come. Pedro come pasteles – Pedro los come.

Marta come carne – Marta la come.Pedro come pan – Pedro lo come.

In English, the pronouns come after the verb:

Marta eats meat – Marta eats it.Pedro eats bread – Pedro eats it.

The verb soler expresses the idea of usually. It is used with the infinitive.

Suelo comer manzanasPedro suele comer pasteles

Soler + infinitive

Soler is a stem change verb like poder.

¿Sueles comer verdura?Sí, suelo comer verdura

4. Change the -o to -ue on parts 1 2 3 6.

1. Identify the group to which the verb belongs = -er

2. Write out verb as if it were regular.

3. Identify the vowel to change: it is ALWAYS the vowel just before the infinitive ending.
