Environmental Effects
21 April 2023
Objectives
Be able to describe how using different energy resources has different effects on the environment. HSW: AF2: Make balanced judgments about scientific developments by
evaluating the economic, moral, social or cultural implications. Used before in: Will use again in:
PLTS: Independent enquirers: support conclusions, using reasoned arguments and evidence.
Used before in: Will use again in:
KeywordsRenewable, non-renewable, carbon dioxide, global warming, sulphur dioxide, acid rain, Renewable, Habitats, Fossil fuel, Nuclear, Night , Decommission, Hills, Hydro, Generator, Not
reliable, Estuary.

Outcomes
All students should be able to: Describe what global warming and acid rain
are. Most students should be able to: Describe the causes of global warming and
climate change and acid rain. Describe the environmental effects of renewable energy resources.
Some students should be able to: Evaluate the advantages and
disadvantages of different energy resources and make a judgment on how we should power the UK.

What does Climate Change mean?

How certain can we be?
Each of these lines represents a computer climate model for the next century.
The grey area contains the predictions for several climate models.
All predict a warming, but there is a range of 5ºC between different models.

Non-renewable energy sources
Coal, oil, gas and nuclear
Advantages Disadvantages
Cheap fuel costs
Short start-up time for gas and oil
Good for “basic demand”
Fuel will run out
Costs a lot of money to
decommission a nuclear plant
Pollution – CO2 leads to global warming and SO2 leads to acid rain
Reliable
Nuclear produces little pollution

Renewable energy sources summary
Wind, tidal, hydroelectric and solar
Advantages Disadvantages
Zero fuel costs
Hydroelectric is good for a
“sudden” demand
Don’t produce pollution
Tidal barrages destroy the habitats of wading birds and hydroelectric
schemes involve flooding farmland
Unreliable (except for
hydroelectric)
Expensive to build
Solar is good for remote locations (e.g. satellites)

Acid Rain
1. Making acid rain2. Add a few drops of indicator to distilled
water (The matches give off CO2 and SO2)3. Burn some matches in a jar and put the lid
on4. When the matches have burnt out add the
indicator/water mix.5. It will turn yellow if acid if the SO2 dissolves
into the water to make H2SO4 (Sulphuric acid)

Pollution
• Fossil fuelled power stations give off many unwanted ________.
• One is _____________ – which contributes to the greenhouse effect. It absorbs ___________ radiation which is then reradiated to Earth, heating it up which could then lead to major climate change.
• Another is ______________ which causes acid rain. Acid rain can kill off _________ life, damaging delicate ecosystems.

The BIG Q: How should we power the UK?• Make a presentation answering these questions:
What is global warming? What is acid rain?
What causes of global warming? How is this different to climate change? What causes acid rain? What are the environmental effects of renewable
energy resources.
What are the environmental advantages and disadvantages to all the different energy resources you can think of?
If you were in charge; explain how you would power the UK.

Environmental Issues - triple
• Global Warming• How does Global Warming occur? (could
use a diagram to explain)?• What are the issues with Global Warming?• What can we do to stop it happening?• Acid Rain• How does Acid Rain occur? (could use a
