A resource is something that is used by people. Resources have different values attached to them.

What are resources?

Many resources are used to produce goods, therefore they have a monetary value.

Some resources are particularly beautiful, so have an aesthetic value attached to them.

Resources have a legal value as we have a right to take advantage of what they offer us.

Other resources have an ethical value as we have a duty to preserve them for future generations.

Can you think of resources that contain these values?

Why study resources?

Resources are often at the centre of conflicts between different groups or countries. Uneven distribution of resources or unequal access to them causes many problems.

If we want our resources to be used sustainably, and protect the environment, we need to tackle these problems.

What is sustainable development?

It is an environment which has an assured long-term future thanks to people working together to manage the Earth’s resources.

Sustainability asks that people think about future generations as well as their own.
