Rainforest distribution

The rainforest is a biome. This is a large area on the Earth's surface. It contains characteristic plant and animal life, adapted to the physical conditions and climate of the environment.

Rainforests are characterized by high rainfall and vegetation that is layered with ground cover, shrubs, the canopy and the emergent layer.

Rainforest biomes are marked in dark green.

World biomes

The climate and geography of a region determine what type of biome can exist there. Over time, species have adapted to differences in climate and environment inside each biome.

Focussing on the Amazon rainforest

The Amazon rainforest is in South America, mainly in Brazil.It covers 7 million km2.It is one of the most important habitats on the planet because of its biodiversity.Biodiversity is the number and variety of plants and animals.

How can the biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest be classified as a resource?
