What are strong verbs?

Strong verbs are ones that behave irregularly. Most verbs are weak and follow the same regular patterns, but strong verbs are irregular in the present and / or past tenses.

Here are some common strong verbs in the present tense:

fahren sprechen essen

ich fahre spreche esse

du fährst sprichst isst

er / sie / es fährt spricht isst

wir fahren sprechen essen

ihr fahrt sprecht esst

sie fahren sprechen essen

Sie fahren sprechen essen

In all these examples it is only

the du and er / sie / es forms that are

irregular.

short e can change to ilong e can change to iea can change to ä.

messen sterben lesen stehlen waschen schlagen

ich messe sterbe lese stehle wasche schlage

du misst stirbst liest stielst wäschst schlägst

er misst stirbt liest stiehlt wäscht schlägt

In the du and er / sie / es forms:

There are other changes (e.g. au äu and o ö) but these are less common.
