World Down Syndrome Day

On the 21st of March every year we recognise that all people with Down syndrome must have

opportunities to live fulfilling lives and be included and equal in all aspects of society. Thank you to

Linda who organised this day of celebration for us . We all wore ties in memory of one of our special

friends and ate a yummy sausage sandwich.

Harmony Day

Harmony Day is about togetherness, kindness and sharing experiences and

knowledge, where we celebrate a respect for diversity, acceptance and

tolerance. This years theme is ‘everyone belongs’ and at Carenne we certainly

believe that everyone belongs. All classes have been enjoying activities this

week to celebrate Harmony Day.

Rhythm Village

Once again we have had a visit from Josh from Rhythm Village. Josh runs music workshops in schools

that are engaging and stimulating. Josh’s workshops were so enjoyable last year that many students

arrived saying ‘I remember you’. Josh has spent two days with us and every student was able to

participate and enjoy music from around the world.

CLASS K Janelle Kemp (Teacher)

Yvette Smith (SLSO)

The students of Class K have settled well into a very busy weekly timetable. Part of our weekly pro-

gram has been visiting Pet therapy and spending time with the animals. Mrs Gavin and her helpers

have been showing us how to care for animals. We have been carefully patting small animals and

helping to feed the big animals.

In Weeks 7, 8 and 9 we are visiting Eglinton Public School and joining in with their weekly dance pro-

gram. Our first 2 visits have been lots of fun and our students have enjoyed their participation in this

program. We have some very groovy dancers in our class.

In Class we have been working hard with our Key Word Sign program. Mrs Smith from the library has

made a wonderful signing board for our students and has been showing us how we can make sen-

tences and ask questions using the board.

We are looking forward to the Easter Hat Parade in Week 11 and have started working on our hats.

The boys cannot wait for the Parade so they can show off their creations.

4 CLASS Mc

Kylie McDonald (Teacher)

Marg Rowe (SLSO)

Term 1 at Carenne School has been very busy for all Preschool and Kindergarten students in Class

Mc. Class Mc continue to work on their daily learning of letter names and their sounds, counting

songs, number recognition and completing fine motor tasks using ‘Busy Jobs’.

We have recently made some beautiful artwork to complement our alphabet and letter learning

and storybooks. We read ‘Where is the Green Sheep’? By Mem Fox .

We wonder if you can find the Green Sheep in Class Mc?

Last Friday Class Mc students completed 12 laps for ‘Relay for Life’; this was a great achievement

for our youngest students to make. This week to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day we made

some colourful ties and we had lots of fun drumming with Josh from Rhythm Village for our

Harmony Day activity.

Class Mc will begin making their Easter Hats at school for the upcoming Easter Hat Parade which we

are looking forward to seeing you all at.

Kylie and Marg.

5 CLASS C

Kerryn Cafe / (Teacher)

Steph Cupples (SLSO)

Class C have continued to work hard and have had a very good term so far we have been learning all

about Australia in Geography. We learnt about our town, our state and can locate our country on a

world map. We have made a travel brochure advertising Australia that shows

all of the wonderful things you can see and do here. We are all working well in

literacy and numeracy groups and enjoying our weekly sessions in the gym and

at the bike track.

We recently began pet therapy which was a hit. We loved meeting the animals

and learning how to look after them. We also started horse riding last week

and everyone is looking forward to our next riding session.

Relay For Life was a great day, we couldn't believe the number of laps students

in Class C walked! What a fantastic cause, it was so enjoyable being able to

walk around the oval talking with our friends and

families. Thank you all for supporting this event. We hope to see you all soon

for the Easter Hat Parade!

Kerryn, Steph and Myles.

CLASS F

Sue Flude (Teacher)

Emma Rush (SLSO)

Everyone has worked very hard and have had an enjoyable and busy term. We have continued with

our maths and literacy groups where we are expanding our number recall and using numbers in

addition and subtraction, learning new words and improving our comprehension and writing skills.

We have all been investigating sound and light with the different science activities that Ms

Couchman has been showing us. In Geography we are discovering different places in Australia and

discovering how far away those places are. We have all learnt that Australia has a very diverse

environment and is very BIG! In PDHPE we are focusing on cooking skills and keeping fit learning

basketball, cricket and T-Ball skills. Congratulations to Simone who is the Carenne 2019 Junior Girl

Swimming Champion. Last week we all enjoyed our first visit to the Pet Therapy Farm and

participating in Carenne’s Relay For Life.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the Easter Hat Parade.

Emily Smith (SLSO)

A Different Dog By Paul Jennings — Novel Study

Benson, Darcy, Jessica, Rose and William have been

working through a novel study for A Different Dog.

The story is very engaging with twists and turns in every chapter. It includes lots of adventure, a

little tragedy and wouldn’t be complete without a typical Paul Jennings twist in the ending. The

students have completed a range of comprehension activities for each chapter as well as working

through Bloom’s Higher Order Thinking (HOT) activities where they really pull apart the concepts

and look for underlying ideas and relatable content from within the text. They’ve begun to

compare different text types with similar themes and will closely examine literary devices as the

term progresses. I’m very impressed with their effort in English.

Reading Eggs — Synthetic Phonics

Kaiden and Jericho have had so much fun working through their Reading Eggs activities and have

both completed Map 1! Hooray! We are very proud of both boys for their commitment to the

program, even when it gets a little tricky. So far they have learned sight words am, at, I and a, and

the word families ’am’ and ’at’ eg. Sam, jam, ham and cat, sat, fat etc. Kaiden and Jericho can

segment each word and use them to read and build their own sentences.

8 CLASS M

Arlene Monaghan (Teacher)

Wendy Lynch (SLSO)

Class M have been working on a unit of work about the connections Australians share with Asia.

One of the highlights of this learning so far saw students using iPads’ and a digital camera to collect

images of local Bathurst gardens. The next stage of our work is where students compare the

images, they have collected to those of traditional gardens found across Asia and discuss

similarities and differences.

Over the coming semester, our best pictures will be chosen to create a class digital on-line photo

book. Students will work in literacy sessions to produce a story throughout the book which will be

shared with staff and students across the school. The Carenne School community will also be

invited to enjoy the students work with the completed photo book being displayed in the front

foyer so visitors can appreciate some of the outstanding work students in Class M have achieved.

9 CLASS B

Anne Baskerville (Teacher)

Kym Tattersall (SLSO)

A great big hello from everyone in Class B. We have all been working really well on our individual

programs and are learning lots and having a great time.

We welcome back Kaydee and Mr Woodward, we all missed them. We are so happy they are back

with their friends in Class B.

We would like to thank Class Moss from the MTC for all there help during the Relay for Life last

Friday. We couldn't have participated as much as we did without them, thanks guys.

We have a new sensory karaoke machine and Rolly has taken it upon himself to be the Class B

entrant in the ‘Voice’. He entertains us singing along to ‘I’m a Believer’. Class B is party central a

couple of afternoons a week.

Until we catch up next time, take care and stay safe from all of us in Class B.

Class E are continuing to work hard on communication and core vocabulary.

This was demonstrated on our Relay for Life day on Friday with our super trooper Brady using his

key word signing to ask to do “more” laps. We were so excited to see Sophie’s enthusiasm on the

day requesting to walk with all classes.

All of our students loved our dressing up with pizazz and glamour. Sparkling hats and bowties

were a winner! Thank you so much to our families for their generous donations.

11 CLASS R

Adam Ryan (Teacher)

Mick Phillips (SLSO)

Term 1 is flying and we are learning lots and having the best time. We all really enjoyed participating

in our schools mini ‘Relay for Life’ last week. Caitlin topped our class with 81 laps and Mr Phillips did

the most laps of any staff member, wow! Some students helped the SRC with cooking the BBQ and

we all enjoyed eating sausage sandwiches together. We have continued to play cricket for senior

school sport and two of our classmates played in the championship side who won the Western Re-

gion Indoor Carnival, well done. Work experience has begun and we are enjoying doing a variety of

activities including: RDA, Canteen and the Outside Jobs Crew. We continue to learn about the envi-

ronment in Science and we have looked at the plant life cycle and the needs of living things. We har-

vested our sunflower seeds from last year’s crop and look forward to planting them in the Spring.

12 CLASS S

Peta Sykes (Teacher)

Karina Molenkamp (SLSO)

Class S thoroughly enjoyed the Relay for Life last week. The students put in a lot of effort and it was

great to see them get outside with people from the community and students and teachers for a

great cause. We also had a great day at the Junior Indoor Cricket Day. The students did a great job

representing the school as well as showing great sportsmanship. Molly and I were very proud of

their efforts.

We continue to work very hard in class and really enjoyed creating our Easter Hats for the Easter

Hat Parade this week. We start Pet Therapy this week and we are very excited to visit the animals.

The students loved having cuddles with our favourite pets. Thanks Mrs Gavin.

CLASS N

Terry Neal (Teacher)

Samantha Schofield (SLSO)

We have ben busy working with maths program, with problem solving and vertical addition and in

English we are working on our handwriting exercises. Great to see both Liam and Bridget are now in

the RDA program each Thursday and enjoying their time riding their horses. Liam is Class N Student

Representative Council member. We had a great day at last Friday's ‘Relay For Life’ walkathon and

completed many laps. We also had a great time at the Harmony Day activities this week with the

drumming and relaxation yesterday and our “Eat Your Way Around the World” food tasting lunch.

A big thank you to our wonderful Class N students and families for cooking their allocated countries

food, for us to all enjoy.

14 CLASS O

Christine Okello (Teacher)

Robyn Staader (SLSO)

Our class has settled well this term and have covered quite a lot of work. Food technology is one

subject that students look forward to every week. This week we cooked a vegetarian pizza. Students

participated in planning, preparing and cooking the pizza. They took time to shop at IGA preferring to

buy low fat, healthy pizza ingredients. In history, students have been learning about traditional life of

indigenous Australians. In this unit we focused mainly on traditional clothing. They learnt that

indigenous Aboriginal people wore leaves, weeds and basically anything they could use from their

natural surroundings. In sport, students enjoyed the swimming carnival and we congratulate Jessica

for winning senior girls trophy. In Science, students learnt about how plants absorb water and

carried out a very successful experiment to explain the absorption process. We look forward to a

great year!

15 CLASS L

Ros Luther/Myles Woodward(Teacher)

Paula Hundy / Melinda Gavin (SLSO)

Well what a few busy weeks we have had and so much fun! Class L have been busy hearing lots of

Australian Bush Stories by BJ Paterson. We have been discussing the Aussie slang that we don’t

often hear these days and wonder what on earth it means. We have listened to and read Clancy

of The Overflow, A Bush Christening and The Man form Ironbark which are quite funny when you

understand the meaning intended.

We also participated in our Carenne Relay for Life, which was awesome last Friday. What a great

way to raise money for a fantastic cause.

We have been entertaining staff and visitors at Coffee Club each week and are learning how to

use our new Coffee Machine. Connor cooked a yummy lunch for us all with Mrs Hundy’s famous

recipe of potato/tuna bake.

We have also started Work Experience and are slowly getting into the swing of things. What a busy

term for us all!!

CLASS A

Michael Auld (Teacher)

Donna Kennedy (SLSO)

It has been another busy few weeks for Class A with clean up Australia Day, helping with an

animal display at Charles Sturt University and being trained as RDA volunteers.

Ms Couchman is the release teacher for Class A this year. She has been undertaking an

environmental program with the class and last Friday she organised an excursion for the students

to help with the cleaning up of the Macquarie River bank.

Mrs Gavin has also trained a number of our students to assist with RDA which includes leading

horses and being a side walker. These are two very responsible RDA jobs and the students are

very proud being part of this great program.

Another RDA and Carenne School activity that the students participate in was the Orientation

Program at Charles Sturt University. Class A students were involved in setting up yards, leading

the various animals as well as talking to the new CSU students about Carenne School and RDA

progams. Once more, the students were very responsible and were great representative’s of

Carenne School.

17 Macquarie Tutorial Centre

Leeanne Graham / Katrina Johnston / Katie Moss / Tania Pringle (Teacher)

Jodie Toomey / Khiara Ryan / Julie Buining (SLSO)

What a very exciting time here at Macquarie Tutorial Centre. At the start of Term 4 2018 students planted some watermelon seeds. Over the coming weeks the staff and students watched the seeds grow into thriving plants. With a total of 20 weeks growth from start to finish including 5 weeks school holidays our watermelons thrived. It was very exciting to return to school to see how big the watermelons had got in our time away. We went from having 2 watermelons on the vines at the end of 2018 to having over 15 when we returned week 1 2019. It was a very good learning experi-ence for all staff and students involved, as we now know that we need to plant our seeds a little bit sooner so that we can enjoy all the watermelons that are grown on the vines. We found that the colder weather stopped the growth of the remaining watermelons and we only got to enjoy 4 in total. It was great to see everyone enjoy the watermelons and we can’t wait to start our watermel-on growing again so that we can share them with our friends at Carenne.

18 Sport and Recreation

Terry Neal

We have had a varied sport and recreation program so far. We have had two great

Regional Indoor Cricket Carnivals in the last two weeks. Both secondary and primary

teams had a lot of fun and success. Our secondary team, the ‘Carenne Cavaliers’ beat

Canobolas High in the finals by one run. This is the first time we have had finals

success. It was also great to see two Carenne students qualify for the Western Region

Rep Swimming Team, for the State Swimming Championships in Week 11 at

Homebush. Congratulations to Joshua Parks and Benson Burge for doing so well last

week at their Regional Swimming Trials at Dubbo. Good luck at State.
