This building is located at 134 Essex street. It was erec- ~ted in 1856, from funds left by the late Miss Caroline Plum-mer, to the proprietors of the Salem Athenaeum.

The first story is appropriated to a. portion of the libraryand the historical collections of the Essex Institute, and hastwo ante-rooms, one of which contains the periodicals andpublication of societies received in exchange‘; the other,the manuscripts and historical collections. In the largeball in the rearhas been arranged the newspapers, pamphlets,and books of reference of the Institute.

The alcoves onthe Western side of the large room in the rear contain thelibrary of the Salem Athenaeum ; those on the eastern thatof the Essex Institute. This school was founded by the Inunificent bequest ofMiss Caroline Plummer. It is a. school for the instruction,employment, and reformation of juvenile offenders in thecity of Salem. The amount of the bequest was $25,000,present fund. $50,000; and the school went into operationSeptember 23, 1870.

A Board of ten Trustees was chosen by the Mayor andAldermen of the city of Salem, in May, 1855, and incorpo-rated by an Act ofthe Legislature on the 21st of May, 1855.The first meeting of the Board of Trustees was held Novem-ber_26,'1855, at which time a. code of By-Laws was adopted,and officerswere elected. The scientific collections have been placed in thecustody of the Trustees of the Peabody Academy of Science,-and have been arranged, with the Museum of the East IndiaMarine Society in the East India Marine Hall.

The Institute publishes a Monthly Bulletin and a volume‘ofthe historical collections annually.

Was formed the 18th of January, 1830, and organized asan Incorporated Association on the 2d of April, 1830. Theintroductory lecture was delivered in the Sewall-streetMeeting House, by Hon. D. A. White.

The purchase of an annual ticket makes a. person a mem-ber of the corporation ; and the price of a. ticket has neverbeen more than ONEDOLLAR. Over six hundred lectures havebeen delivered in the annual courses.

The Legislature, on the 20th of April, 1852, passed an act,making Daniel A. White, Stephen 0. Phillips, GeorgePeabody, their associate petitioners and successors, and themale citizens of the city ‘of Salem, of twenty-one years ofage, purchasers of tickets to the twenty-third course oflectures, a corporation by the name of the Salem Lyceum.At a meeting of the corporation, held May, 1873, the fol-lowing oflicers were elected:

Medicine and medical advice gratuitously.In 1859 it was reconstructed on the plan of similar insti-

tutions in larger cities, and a. central oflice established atthe Town Hall, where the clerk is in attendance every day,Sundays excepted, from '2 to 5, p.m., to receive all applica-tions for the privileges aflbrded by the institution. Anyperson approved by the Executive Committee, who shallpay the sum of five dollars per aunum, or fifiaycents permonth, may be entitled to the benefit of the instltution forhimself and family. Those who may be unable to pay thissmall assessment will be provided for gratuitously. Theexpenses to be paid by annual subscription.

The city is divided into two districts, the Eastern and theWestern, to each of which is assigned a physician and anapothecary. The Eastern District includes all persons whomay apply for relief living eastward of St. Peter and Centralstreets, and in South Salem. The Western district includesthose living Westward of the above streets, and in NorthSalem.
