.S.gor CPO:MoreCCTVs needed

. Khalld feels that cameras are not a

. priority for the state governmentBy ELAN [email protected]

- SElANGORpolice chiefDatIJk Khalid, Abu Bakar has called for the installa-. tion of as many c16secircuit televi-

sion cameras (ccrV) as possible atstrategic locations.

He said there were no doubts thatccrvs wouldplaya role in crimeprevention efforts.

Khalidsaidhehad made itc1eartoboth the previous and the presentSelangor Government on the need

. for the ccrvcameras to be fixed atstrategicareas.

Khalid said he had, informed the, state that ecrvs were a vital tool

that would act as a deterrent to--'-'-' , . ".'.'- '

criminals. "

"Look at Kuala Lumpur, there areccrv cameras covering more thanhalf of its area and they have helpedto bring down the crime rate.

"Criminals probably have- shiftedtheir operatiol1s to Selangor as theyfind it easier here since not manyplacesare equipped with the cameras,"he said in response to the commentsmade bySelangor'sSultan SharafuddinIdris Shah that there should be moreccrv cameras in .the state.

From his observation. Khalid saidthe previous government showedmore interest in installing the cam-eras than the present government.

Installing ccrvs, he said, seemednot to be a priority of the Pakatan

government."I strongly feel that sl.IChcameras

must b~ fixed at busy cities andtowns' like Petaling Jaya, Ampang,Subang Jaya and Klang where thereis too much commercial activity.

"Besidescrime prevention. ccrvcameras can also help to identify thecriminals," he said.

Khalid hoped that the state wouldseriouslycc)Osider installing thecameras at crime-prone areas in thestate. .

On March 10, StarMetro had.reported that the RM120milccrvcameras deal between a privatecompany and the SelangorGovern-ment would be reviewed and. ifnecessary.terminated.

Speaking out: Khalid said therewere no doubts that CCTVcameras could curb crime.

The company, which was involvedin renting out 414 ccrv cameras toall the local authorities in Selangor.had been told to justify the high costof the installation.

State local government committeechairman -Ronnie Liu said a directivehad been iss1led to all 12 localauthorities not to proceed with theinstallation of the remaining ccrvcameras in their areas.

KUALA LUMPUR: Domestic Trade and Con-sumer, Mfairs Minister Datuk Shahrir AbdulSamad is willing to give the benefit of thedoubt to traders who do not lower the pricesof their goods de£pite today's petrol. pricereduction. .

"Manufacturers have explained that pricesof goods will only come down around the firstquarter of next year as they were still utilisingmaterials boughtpreviously,"he told The Staryesterday., '

However, if the traders refused to slashprices later,Shahrir said he would "persuade"

them to do so as reasonable prices woulden~ourage demand among consumers.

The miriistry, he said, would also review'licences given to wholesalers supplying essen-tialgoods as checks revealed that they wereimposing unreasonable conditions on traders.

"For example, some wholesalers would onlyagree to supply Super Tempatan 15% rice tomini markets if they bought other grades ofrice as well,"he told reporters after launchingAeon Co (M) Bhd's "Say No To Plastic Bags"campaign here yesterday.

Shahrir added that wholesale cornpanieswere still charging higher prices although theywere enjoying dieselsubsidies from the Govern- ,

ment., '-, .'; "

Asked to comment on Prime Minister DatukSeri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's call on the min-istry to ensure prices of goods were in accord-ance with current petrol prices, Shahrir agreedas cheaper goods would stimulate consumerspending and keep the economy strong.

Si... cityPuchongResidents furious it's become a ~en for hooker~

By'TEOHELSEN

THE residents do not want it,but Puchong could soon out-strip Chow Kit for the dubiousdistinction of being the mostinfamous red light district inthe country,

Residents are furious theauthorities have allowed therapidly growing township todegenerate into a bustling havenfor prostitution. '

An official of the Subang JayaMunicipal Council, under which

- Puchong faUs, confirmed viceactivities have iricreased.

In recent weeks, the councilclosed down three vice dens, andit is'just the tip ()f the problem.

, "Apparently; prostitutes havemoved from the city to Puchong.Prostitution used to be quiterampant in Subang Jaya, butnow it seems Puchong hasbecome the hotspot."

In the wake of the .hookershave come other vices.

The official said the councilwas trying to check the viceactivity by limiting permits for'massage parlours, which usu-ally turned into prostitutiondens. To date, 40 permits fortraditional massage outlets have''been approved.

Councillor Gary Chong, dis-mayed thatPuchong haS recent-

'ly been dubbed a "dirty" area, called for more drastic action

against offenders."It is getting more serious.

There haVe been a lot of illegalhotels that have been raided andclosed down in -recent months."

He said'such illegal premiseswere mushrooming fast, citingBandar Puteri as one of the

places whim he has found illegalmassage parlours operating.

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok alsowants sterner action taken.

She highlighted a case of twoChinese nationals 'who claimed

they were forced to becomeprostitutes but escaped lastSunday after more than a weekof being locked up and starvedin a house in Taman Mutiara,Puchong.

"These girls, aged 21 and 19,had been deceived into thinkingtllere were legal job opportuni-ties here," said Kok, adding tllattlle pair flew home to China at4.50pm yesterday.

They' had lodged a policereport witll tlle help of a localresident who spotted tllem wan-dering about after they escaped, from their "prison". ,
