NOVEMBER 2, 2014 THE COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED www.stmaryfc.org Reflecting on God’s Word Tom stood staring at the letters R.I.P. on his grandfather’s gravestone. “Rest in peace, Grampa.” He wanted nothing more for this beleaguered old man. Grampa had seen so much hardship and was always good to Tom. But would he rest in peace? His love for the bottle was well known. No one had ever seen him in church. Tom just couldn’t shake his fears about the fate of his grandfa- ther’s immortal soul. Today’s feast gathers up all our hopes and fears about the eternal destiny of our loved ones. We may hope that their faith and love will be rewarded. We may be relieved that their suffering is over, or afraid they did not merit heaven. For all these rea- sons we pray: “Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Dear Parishioners, This year The Com-

memoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls) falls on a Sunday. Certainly this provides more of an opportunity to remem-ber and give thanks for the lives of our faithful departed. As Christians we believe that those who died faithful to their baptis-mal call to be disciples of Jesus are num-bered among God’s Saints. Today’s Gospel points to the hope we have for our beloved dead: Jesus promises that “I will not reject anyone and I shall not lose anything.” Our belief in Jesus and his promise to us is far more than words. Our belief transforms the way we live and the priorities we commit to. Let us give thanks for the example and faithfulness of our beloved departed. May they truly rest in peace. This past Sunday at Holy Name Cathedral, Mrs. Jennifer Pepping received the “Christifideles” Award from Cardinal Francis George. This award is bestowed

annually in each parish upon a Catholic layperson who has used his/her talents to deepen the life of the Church in the parish or has served in an extraordinary way. Jen-nifer has worked tirelessly to advance adult formation opportunities here at Saint Mary. Her many contributions include the facilita-

tion of programs, speakers, Bible studies, retreats, baptismal prepara-tion, and she currently serves on the Parish Transformation Steering committee. Congratulations to Jen with much gratitude for all the many ways she shares her gifts for the greater good. A note of Congratulations to Erin Gardener pictured here with her family as she was received into full communion with the Catholic Church. Erin has served generously at Saint Mary School and her joyful spirit is an inspiration to many. A note of thanks to Kathi Barrett, Roberta Quick, and Joaquin Val-des for their service on the RCIA team. If you or someone you know is seeking to be-come Catholic or have the desire to complete the Sacraments, please call the parish office for more information. Our Parish Transformation initiative is beginning its 7th week. In week 6 we began our work on identifying our Mission Theme.

The purpose of selecting a Mission Theme is to provide clear

direction for where the parish is called to focus in order to advance the mission of Christ through Parish Trans-formation.

A parish cannot be everything to everybody, so that is why it is important to focus on 1 (or 2) core themes.

The theme should ideally evoke an image that helps people quickly picture where the parish is going. As much as possible, avoid ‘Hallmark card’ themes that lack mean-ing.

The Mission Theme will be the core of the Mission Narrative and should offer a clear image that helps focus our ef-forts

Please keep the Parish Transformation team in your prayers.

Let us pray for one another,

Fr. Jerry

Pies in Need!

St. Mary of the Annunciation School has the opportunity to earn 45% profit on pie sales! In order to hit the 45% tier, we need to purchase 500 or more pies as a school. I know that sounds over-whelming at first but our school/parish use this opportunity to also help others in need. In November we take this opportunity to share with those who aren’t as fortunate as ourselves. You can choose to order pies for your own family or to donate them to a local char-ity. Either way, the pie counts toward our grand total! We will be sampling pies on November 1st and 2nd, and selling pies after all Masses in the Narthex. At that time you can purchase pies to take home, order for November 15th Market Day pick up for yourself or pay to donate pies. This year the charities we will be helping are:

St. Mary’s PADS Program Fremont Township Food Pantry

Catholic Charities Meals on Wheels Wauconda Food Pantry

These programs are able to accept up to 300 pies in November! It is a wonderful way to share with others this Thanksgiving, while simultaneously supporting our kids/school. If you prefer to avoid the excitement of pie sales in the Narthex, you can order online or via the Market Form for yourself. To do-nate, please use the form below. This form and money can be sent via school mail c/o Becky Casper or handed into the Parish Office. Don’t for get, a portion of every pie you order—for yourself or for donation—goes back to our very own St. Mary of the Annunciation School! If you have any questions, please contact Becky or Dan Casper at [email protected] or 847-487-4367.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND GENEROSITY!

Please make checks payable to Market Day and return no later than Monday, November 10, 2014.

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer This weekend we celebrate one of the great feasts of the

Church, All Saints’ Day. And on the next day, All Souls’ Day, we pray for all the faithful departed. On All Saints Day we honor, venerate (and petition) those disciples of the Lord who have gone before us into the kingdom of heaven. And we hope that one day we, too, will be counted among their number. The Feast of All

Saints does not simply recall the “hall of fame” saints such as Peter, Paul, Francis of Assisi, Teresa of Avila, and Catherine of Sienna, et al. In fact we also honor all those countless disciples who have lived lives of faith, service and virtue and have thus entered into the joy of heaven. We have great reason to hope that this number includes our virtuous friends and family members who have preceded us in death. Most of us think of saints as being almost other-worldly and untouchable. We have these images of people who endured great suffering for their faith or who lived with such superlative virtue that they seem to be superhuman. Seen in this fashion, the saints don’t seem like real people and we can conclude that holiness is beyond our grasp. The examples of their lives may not seem very inspirational because they appear to be too perfect and unlike the gritty struggles we confront in our hearts and lives each day. In fact, most saints were ordinary people like you and me who struggled with difficulties and personal failings (sometimes severe and scandalous ones) before “getting their act together.” Saints were real people who had strengths and limitations, virtues and failings. There were saints who did not like each other very much. There were saints who were grave sinners before turning their lives around. Per-haps we would be more inspired in our own pursuit of holiness if we were more familiar with full three-dimensional portraits of the real peo-ple behind the legends. To this end, consider the following saint tidbits: Peter and Paul are two of the greatest saints in history. Yet, Peter denied even knowing Jesus and Paul led vigilante mobs that stoned early Christians to death. Later, Peter and Paul (neither being a

shrinking violet) could barely stand to be in the same room with one another because they disagreed so vehemently about how to bring Gentiles into the Church. And let’s not forget that Matthew was a trai-torous, extortionist tax collector before he joined Jesus’ band of disci-ples. St. Moses the Ethiopian was a 4th century gang-banger who practiced theft, murder and rape before converting to Christ. St. Augustine lived a hedonistic life that would have made Hugh Hefner blush before he embraced the faith. Among other things, Augustine is known for his famous prayer: “O Lord, give me chastity...but not yet.” St. Jerome had a bad temper and could be quite surly. He accused St. Cyril of Jerusa-lem of being a heretic before recanting the charge. St. Callistus was a slave who skimmed money from the coffers he managed. Later, after mending his ways, he was elected pope. (Hippolytus so objected to this election he set himself up as the first antipope. Years later he reconciled and is now recognized as a saint too.) Another St. Cyril (this one from Alexandria) helped to depose another saint, St. John Chrysostom. These are just a few snippets of hundreds upon hundreds that show how many of the great saints of history struggled to overcome their human weakness. But if they could do it, we can too. Sainthood is not perfection, it is growth and consuming dedication to Christ and his Gospel. Each and every one of us is called to holiness, not in some sterile, plastic way but amidst the messiness and trials of daily life and with the help of those around us. Holiness is a journey, not simply a destination. It is growing in the love of God and learning to do his will more completely. As we celebrate the Feast of All Saints and pray for All Souls, let us each embrace this journey and look to those who have gone before for inspiration and guidance…with a bit of amusement thrown in! Indeed if these men and women could do it, so can you and I! If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the parish office or send an email to [email protected].

I nto your hands, O Lord, we humbly entrust our brothers and sisters. In this life you embraced them with your tender love;

deliver them now from every evil and bid them enter eternal rest. The old order has passed away: welcome them then into paradise, where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain, but the fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed,

and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in your mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last. Blessed John Henry Newman
