This jour- ney took forty years and it wasn’t easy. When the prodigal son nally “came to his sens- es” and realized he would be beer oback home as a hired worker than stealing slop from the pigs, he began a journey from being lost to being found, from being dead to being alive. This journey did not take forty years, but how do you measure in clock time a journey that trans- forms the heart? This journey wasn’t easy either. The path to being a new creation can take forty years, forty days, forty minutes, or forty seconds. Some- times it involves an outer journey; it is always an inner one. It is dicult—dying to self always is. What maers is that we make it. Dear Parishioners, The Fourth Sunday of

Lent has traditionally been called “Laetare Sunday,” mean-ing to be joyful or to rejoice. The Parable of the Prodigal Son reveals the father’s joy at the return of his younger son. Pope Francis has called this Gospel text “the core of the Gospel and our faith, because mercy is presented as a force that overcomes everything, filling the heart with love, and bringing consolation through pardon.” I think that when we hear the parable it can be easy for us to sit in judgment of the behavior of both sons. I find myself especially challenged by the response of the older son to his father. The older son is indignant that his father shows mercy and is not concerned with retribution and punishment, but rather is focused on acceptance and homecoming. The late Henri J. Nouwen speaks of a spiritual homecoming and the need for each of us to deeply en-counter God’s unconditional love. In his book “The Re-turn of the Prodigal Son,” Nouwen poses a challenging question: “Are you home tonight?” Being truly at home conveys both a physical and spiritual reality. To be at home physically is the stage on which we live out our lives. Home means we belong and that we matter to someone. To be at home spiritually concerns our relation-ship with God and our conscious awareness of God’s action and presence in our lives. I think the more serious sin of the older son is that he forgot the father’s great love for him. He was at home and he didn’t recognize it and he certainly wasn’t grateful for it. The goal, of course, is to live in the pres-ence of the Father’s joy. Though we are sinners, we are loved by a God who sees the goodness in each of us. It is because of his great love and mercy that we can truly rejoice! Please keep our catechumens who are preparing for the Easter Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation at the Easter Vigil: Taren Cerny, Aman Cerny, Mikayla Escobedo, and Marco Anselmi. Let us also pray for Megan Escobedo and Michael Harms who are already baptized but who will be received into full communion with the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

Today’s Gospel is one of the best-known passages in all of Scripture. Everyone refers to this story as “The Parable of the

Prodigal Son.” The irony is that this parable is really intended to highlight the other two main characters, the father and the older brother. Perhaps a better name for this story would be “The Parable of the

Loving Father.” When the younger son said to his father, “Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me,” the original hear-ers of this parable would have fully comprehended just what the younger son was asking for. As the younger of two brothers, he was entitled to one third of his father’s estate upon his father’s death, while the first-born son would get two-thirds. By asking for his share now, the younger son is announcing a complete break with his family. The younger son isn’t simply inconsiderate and greedy; in effect he is wish-ing that his father was dead and is treating him as if that were already the case! Seen in this light, the father’s embrace and forgiveness are even more remarkable. Indeed, Jesus is teaching us that our Heavenly Father is always willing to embrace and forgive even though we often act as if He were dead. Of course, like the prodigal son, we must first turn our direction around and follow the path back to the Father if we are to avail ourselves of His abundant love and mercy. It has also been said that this Gospel story could be called “The Para-ble of the Resentful Older Brother.” When I was younger, I really felt sorry for the older brother. It sure seemed to me that he was getting “the short end of the stick” compared to the father’s lavish treatment of the wayward, good-for-nothing younger brother. “I’ve slaved for you for years and you’ve never so much as bought me a few steaks to barbe-que with my friends!” Ah, but herein is the other major lesson of this parable! Author Joel Schorn writes: “In addition to the lesson about God’s forgiveness, Je-sus also is teaching us about the need to be wary of our own self-righteousness and selfishness. Sometimes we have a hard time feel-ing generous or forgiving toward those we feel have not ‘earned’ it or do not ‘deserve’ it as much as we do – but God doesn’t think that way.” Jesus is poking a hole in the inflated, false sense of self-righteousness we show when we judge ourselves against others. It is a grave failing that leads to an unwillingness to forgive and to a hard-ness of heart that makes us resentful and bitter rather than joyful over the repentance of another. It is because we are often the older brother that we need to repent like the younger one.

Here’s how Fr. Dominic Grassi sums up Jesus’ message in this para-ble: “It is the father we are challenged to imitate. Jesus does not tell us this story so that we can sin and come back and seek forgiveness and not worry about it. He also does not want us to respond like the hard-working but self-righteous son. The purpose of the parable is to remind us that during Lent we have to forgive others. If we want to be forgiven the sins we recognize (like the younger son’s) and those sins of which we are not aware (like the older son’s), we must be open to reconcile ourselves with others whose sins hurt us. Like the generous father whose wealth never seems to run out, ...we have, inside of us, more than enough of God’s loving forgiveness to share.” May we repent like the prodigal son. Unlike the older son, may we not be resentful of those who receive forgiveness. May we forgive like the father. And if we do these things, may we be forgiven, too! If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an email to [email protected].

Walking Along the Breast Cancer Journey Facilitated by Catherine Sims, M. Ed., M. Div. Associate Director, Institute for Lay Formation University St. Mary of the Lake Six Thursday sessions Spring 2016: March 31 April 7 April 14 April 28 May 5 May 12 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the Parish Center Meeting Rooms Any serious illness is an invitation to embark on a pilgrimage of faith. From the time a woman receives the diagnosis, through the treatments, and healing, women with breast cancer begin a journey that is not of their choosing. It’s important to look back on the journey taken. What transformation has taken place as you’ve moved through the different stages of this jour-ney? It is an opportunity to explore new areas of life and one’s self. Join other women who know what it is like to walk the steps of breast cancer. Through this series of sessions, reflect, listen, pray, and share experience, grounded in the richness of our Catholic tradition. Women will be invited to look at the journey of breast cancer through the symbol of a pilgrimage. Each woman will receive a simple journal, guided reflection questions, and will have an opportunity to share. Registration is requested to participate.

All women who have experienced breast cancer are invited to partici-pate. Please share the information with others who might benefit from the sessions.
