What is an Eating Disorder?

"Eating disorders (ED) are characterized by under or over eating, and motivations for either vary, including emotion regulation. The label “emotional eating” is a common term, and the actual behaviour of eating to cope with emotions is considered within the realm of eating disorders;

Eating for emotion regulation reasons has been extensively empirically researched and is now well understood within the eating disorders;

Thorough specialized diagnostic assessment for eating disorders is essential to guide referral for appropriate treatment;

This specialized diagnostic assessment sometimes establishes an eating disorder diagnosis, when the patients’ personal assessment was to the contrary, and vice versa. In either case, the diagnosis allows for referral to the appropriate treatment."

(Dr. Josee Jarry, Ph.D. C. Psych, personal communication, 2009)

PREVENTION AND EDUCATION

Since its inception, BANA has provided services to thousands of individuals of all ages, genders and socioeconomic backgrounds. We are happy to offer presentations at no cost to your organization on various topics including Self Esteem, Body Image, Size Acceptance, Body Based Harassment, Media Influences and more.

Presentations include:

Self Esteem and Body Image Workshop

(Grades 5-8) Our society places great emphasis on physical

attributes. Teaching young people to have

confidence in their unique talents, abilities and

interests reduces their reliance on physical

appearance as their main measure of self-worth.

When adolescents have healthy self-esteem,

they feel more positive about their bodies and

find it easier to make good decisions for

themselves that promote health, including

taking better care of their bodies.

Sizing up the Media: Decoding the Messages

(Grades 9-12 and adults)

This unique presentation examines how the

images of women in the media create feelings

of negative body image, inadequacy, low self-

esteem and put us at risk for eating disorders.

Through the use of visual aids, this workshop

encourages viewers to re-evaluate the images

presented by the advertising industry and to take

action against these toxic messages. This

presentation is available for schools, community

groups, annual meetings, conferences or public

education events
