history.In 1960, he won a spot on the U.S. Olympic boxing

team.Well known for his foot work and for having a powerful

punch.After his Olympic win, he was signaled as an American

hero.Took heavyweight champion of the world in 1964.He was doing some spiritual searching and decided to

join the black Muslim group. Changed his name to Muhammad Ali.

Arthur Ashe

Arthur Ashe He was a tennis player. Became the first and is still the only African

American tennis player to win the U.S Open and Wimbledon.

He is the first black American to be ranked No. 1 in the world.

Helped raise awareness for AIDS dieses.

Jesse Owens

Jesse Owens Known as "The Buckeye Bullet“ When competing for Ohio State University, he

equaled one world record and broke three others.In 1936 he won four gold medals at the Olympic

Games in Berlin.

Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson He played with the Dodgers for a decade He made advancements in the cause of civil

rights for black athletes. He was the first African American to play in the

major league baseball. 1942 to 1944, he served as a second lieutenant

in the United States Army.

Alex Haley

Alex Haley Alex was an African American writer. He wrote about the struggles that African

Americans faced. He wrote letters on his typewriter while he was

on a boat during World War 2. That’s how he began writing.

Ella Baker

Ella Baker She was an activist. She organized the Young Negroes Cooperative

League. She became a national director for the NAACP. She joined the Southern Christian Leadership

Conference.

W.E.B DuBois

W.E.B DuBois He was and activist and a scholar. He was one of the most important African

American activists during the first half of the 20th century.

He co-founded NAACP and supported Pan-Africanism.

He became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

He wrote extensively and was the best known spokesperson for African-American rights.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. He gave the “I Have A Dream” speech. He was a minister and a civil rights activist. He led the Civil Rights Movement for many years. MLK had a seismic impact on race relations. He played a vital role in ending the legal

segregation of African-American citizens in the South and other areas of the nation.

He is remembered as one of the most applauded African-American leaders in history.

Malcolm X

Malcolm X He was a minister. He was an African-American leader. He was a prominent figure in the Nation of Islam. Malcolm articulated concepts of race pride and

black nationalism.

Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks She was a civil rights activist. Known as “the mother of the freedom

movement” And she is also known as “the first lady of civil

rights Fought to end segregation. Refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white

passenger.

Sidney Poitier

Sidney Poitier He was an actor, film director, author, and

diplomat.
