27 July 2012 Recommended version for IASI processing
7.4 beta (not officially
released)
17 Oct 2012 A patch file is available to fix other issues:
• Metop-B MHS instrument I/D was wrong in AAPP code (see forum announcement)
• CrIS channel selection bug, and improve BUFR encoding
• Fix problem in BUFR encoding FY-3B MWTS/MWHS

Metop-A bias issue
• Metop-A ATOVS being disseminated by EARS stations, and also by Kiyose, Jincheon and Hong Kong.
• Not available to South America; limited coverage of Australia
• AMSU bias issue recently identified by Météo-France (next slide)
2 sets of antenna corrections are defined in AAPP: the original set and a post-launch update
EARS and Kiyose had been using v2, Jincheon and Hong Kong were using v1
Jincheon switched to v2 on 12th October, Hong Kong on 22nd Octoberexport FDFSAT=METO-02export FDFVN=2
This was not picked up by the NWP SAF monitoring because we can accept either version.
• Should not arise for Metop-B (only 1 set of corrections)
But global Metop-B BUFR from EUMETSAT has version number set to 2 – this number is not satellite specific at EUMETSAT?

Metop-BChanges to accommodate Metop-B:
1. Check: has your station correctly extracted OBT-UTC correlation parameters from the MMAM?
2. Install AAPP v7.3
3. In ATOVS_ENV7, add M01 to list of satellites in PAR_NAVIGATION_DEFAULT_LISTESAT and PAR_NAVIGATION_DEFAULT_LISTEBUL
4. install MHS patch (see “7.4 beta” in earlier table)

Extension of RARS to IASI• The EUMETSAT EARS-IASI service is already operational,
Athens, Maspalomas, Lannion, Svalbard
• Uses OPS-LRS + AAPP
• 366 channels + 300 Principal Components, all spots
• Output BUFR file typically 12Mb per pass
Sequence 3-40-008
Athens pass

Extension of RARS to Suomi NPP
• For level 0 to level 1 processing, use Univ. Wisconsin’s Community Satellite Processing Package (CSPP) http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/cspp/
• Current version v1.2 (4th Oct 2012)
• Needs a reasonably powerful Linux system (64 bits; 16 GB memory)
• AAPP ingests the Sensor Data Record (SDR) files for ATMS/CrIS. These are HDF5. Converts to BUFR
Sequence 3-10-061 for ATMS; 3-10-060 for CrIS
Master table 16 (WMO web site)
• 399 channels baseline for CrIS
• Most of the functionality is in AAPP v7.3. A few fields are not yet filled for CrIS (e.g. surface height and type; cloud cover). This will be addressed.

Extension of RARS to FY-3
• Sounder instruments in the L-band direct broadcast
• Level 0 processing package for FY-3A and FY-3B available from CMA:
http://www.nsmc.cma.gov.cn/NewSite/NSMC_EN
Training → FAQs
• Generates SDRs (same HDF5 format as global data already distributed by EUMETSAT)
• BUFR encoding for MWTS and MWHS instruments now implemented in AAPP – based on sequence devised by ECMWF (not yet addressed IRAS)
• Submit proposal to WMO Codes group?
• There will be strong interest in FY-3C with an AMSU-like microwave sounder (launch Sept 2013).

NWP SAF RARS monitoring
• No changes to RARS-ATOVS monitoring at Met Office
• Daily stats files emailed to those centres who have requested them
• Plots available at http://research.metoffice.gov.uk/research/interproj/nwpsaf/ears_report/index.html
• Met Office (EARS, A-P RARS, S-A RARS) and Météo-France (EARS)
• Monitoring of GTS data availability is still planned. (Currently monitor data received via ftp)

EARS-IASI monitoring (Met Office)
• Compare raw radiances with reconstructed
• Until 23 October, getting some bad PC scores (see below). Should be fixed now that AAPP v7.3 is implemented at EARS nodes

Daily EARS-IASI log files
• Plan to make these available to EUMETSAT
• Also plan comparisons with global data
