I can hardly wait to hear your reaction after you’ve read the feature articles in this issue of Dentistry Magazine. We’ve askedstudents and faculty to tell the stories of recent changes in ourdental and dental hygiene clinical programs. Two phrases bestdescribe the emphasis of the articles––integrated training andcommunity-based education. Supported by some great photos, the stories provide personal glimpses into the unique learningand patient care experiences that have been created to enhanceeducational opportunities for our students, address the dentalaccess challenges of underserved communities, and to make a difference in the lives of our patients.

We lead with a report on how our dental and dental hygienestudents are learning and caring for patients “together.” Thanksto our forward-thinking faculty and the eagerness of our students to embrace new opportunities, our dental and dentalhygiene programs are finding new ways to work together to educate students. In our patient clinics, dental and dental hygieneprofessionals-in-training learn side-by-side, referring patientsback and forth and sharing information and personal experi-ences. Dental hygiene and dental students also take coursestogether. In classrooms and clinics, they learn together so thatwhen they transition into private practice, they’ll understand andappreciate each others’ skills and continue to find ways to workas a team in the best oral health interests of their patients.

Our second feature article describes our newest community-based education program in Willmar, Minnesota. Like the clinicalrotation we offer our students in Hibbing, this initiative exposesstudents to the unique professional and personal dynamics ofpractice in greater Minnesota. Here, too, we find our dental

Dean

Dear Colleagues,

fromthe

hygiene and dental students caring for patients and learning as a team. I hope you’re as impressed as I was with our students’comments about the many reasons this outreach rotation issomething very special to them.

Our third article is an exciting one. For the first time, School of Dentistry researchers have been awarded a grant by the Academic Health Center’s Translational Research GrantsProgram and a novel approach to anti-HIV therapy is beinginvestigated.

Later in the magazine you’ll read about this year’s outstandingdental and dental hygiene alumni awardees: Chris Blue for dentalhygiene and Tom Sitzer for dentistry. Their contributions havebeen significant. I encourage you to help celebrate those accom-plishments by attending our annual Dean’s Reception to be held, this year, on Thursday, April 10. (Yes, this year’s celebration is on Thursday evening, instead of our traditional Friday eveningevent. So, please make a note on your calendar.) Loren Tapel, thisyear’s president of the School of Dentistry Alumni Association, will be making the presentations. I’m sure both award winnerswould love to see you there and that you’ll enjoy hearing whatthey have to say about this special honor. It’ll be a moment toremember for us all.

I also encourage you to read attentively the People and ClassNotes sections of the magazine. We always include these updatesto help you keep in touch with news from your classmates andfriends and learn about the amazing things our students, faculty, and alumni are doing––achievements and accomplishments that make us all proud to be a University of Minnesota School of Dentistry alum. There’s also news about our new faculty hires. We’re bringing-on people from around the world who have talents and ideas that are helping us get ready for the many challenges and opportunities that tomorrow’s world has in store.

Finally, I hope you’re as impressed as I was when I saw thenumber of names listed in the donor section of the magazine.Columns of benefactors––faculty, alumni, friends and partners of the School of Dentistry––fill page after page. These recordnumbers of contributors demonstrate our success in connectingand re-connecting with people who recognize the importance of their role in making our school an even better place to care for patients and educate students.

Enjoy your reading, and I’ll be waiting to hear your reactions.

Sincerely,

Erwin Schaffer, dean emeritus of theSchool of Dentistry from 1964 to 1977,passed away early in the morning onDecember 25, 2007. He was 85 years old.

Schaffer served the University ofMinnesota, its School of Dentistry, andthe dental profession in the nation andthe world for more than 60 years. Avisionary leader and the school’s mostaccomplished statesman, he pioneeredadvances in dental education and research, guided the school through its most pivotal years, and left a 19-story legacy.

Schaffer received a doctor of dental surgery degree in 1945 and a master’s of science degree in periodontol-ogy in 1951, both from the University of Minnesota. He served in the MarineCorps in the mid-1950s and, during thattime, was the first periodontist in theworld to graft cartilage to the jaw. He isone of the founders of modern scientific,evidence-based periodontology, with over 100 articles published in scientificjournals, most on the topic of periodontalregeneration. A diplomate of theAmerican Board of Periodontology, he helped guide the development of theprofession at the national level throughservice as a director of the AmericanBoard of Periodontology (1964-1970)and as president of the American

Academy of Periodontology (AAP) in1972. In 1974, he received an award foroutstanding contributions to periodon-tology from the American DentalEducation Association’s William J. GiesFoundation for the Advancement ofDentistry. He was also honored by theAAP with a Fellowship Award (1977),Clinical Research Award (1988), and itsprestigious Gold Medal Award in 1990.

Yet among the many accomplishmentsin his remarkable career, Shaffer’s work at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry leaves a particularly lastinglegacy. He was a faculty member anddepartment chair. In 1964, he was amember of the search committee to find a new permanent dean for the school. While away from the school lecturing inWillmar, the committee met and suggest-ed his name as a candidate. Persuaded toaccept the appointment, he served ablyfrom 1964 to 1977 and his time as deanwas, perhaps, the most transformationalin the history of the school. Althoughalways quick to credit others, it was his forward-thinking vision, personal andpolitical skills, and endless enthusiasm for and commitment to the Universityand its School of Dentistry that resultedin the necessary funding from the legisla-ture and private sources to build a new

dental school and 19-story health sciencesfacility in 1975, now called Moos Tower.

During his tenure as dean, the Schoolof Dentistry consistently ranked first or second in the nation for federally fundedresearch money. He created a dozen newprograms––including programs in humanoral genetics, management of cleft palateand maxillofacial deformities, health ecology, auxiliary education, self-teachingmethods, practice management, and oralbiology––and tripled the number of full-time faculty. He established the School of Dentistry’s Century Club, a model forUniversity fundraising, and was personallyresponsible for raising millions of dollarsto support dental school initiatives, including the school’s new $11.3 millionSimulation Clinic.

In 1987, the School of Dentistry established the Erwin Schaffer Chair in Periodontal Research in his honor.Officially retired in 1991, he continuedteaching until 2006.

Schaffer was an avid outdoorsmanand, at age 70, won a silver medal inNastar downhill ski racing, taking out the finish line fencing in the process. InApril, 2007, he received the DistinguishedDental Alumnus Award in recognition of a lifetime of outstanding service to the University of Minnesota School ofDentistry. This fall, he was also honoredby the University of Minnesota Board ofRegents with the University’s OutstandingAchievement Award. It is the secondhighest award offered by the University, second only to the Honorary Doctorate.

Simulation Clinic Featured in University of MinnesotaAdvertising Campaign

It’s a rare occasion when a Big TenUniversity singles out its dental school as one of the “mind-blowing pursuits” taking place on campus. But that’s whathappened when the University ofMinnesota rolled-out its award-winningTV advertising campaign aimed atheightening awareness of the institution’sdrive to discover new ways to teach, learn, research and serve. First to star in the U-M’s 2007-08 series of “Driven toDiscover™” ads: The dental school’s newvirtual reality-based Simulation Clinic.

Minneapolis-based Olson Agencydeveloped the innovative “Driven toDiscover” brand. The campaign has aunique “search bar” look and messagesfor billboards, print ads, and televisionand radio spots. The agency and its 35-person film crew spent nine hours at the dental school last August filmingthe 45-second TV ad.

“I’ll never watch another ad withoutrealizing the amount of work that goesinto creating it,” says Patrick Lloyd, dean of the School of Dentistry and theon-air spokesperson in the advertisement.Third-year dental student Rania Habib hada speaking role, and 16 dental studentstook direction as “extras” working on

the advanced simulation equipment.Over the course of the six-month

campaign, 80 percent of the state’s viewing audience was introduced to the unmatched educational benefits of learning and teaching with patient simulation technology at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.

The new teaching facility has also captured the imagination of dentalschools from across the country. SinceDecember, faculty teams from five U.S.dental schools have visited, as have simulation technology experts attendingthe annual meeting of the U.S. AdvancedSimulation Consortium, which met oncampus in February. They came from asfar away as Israel, Germany and Malaysiato tour the facility and learn about thedesign, layout, equipment and utilization.

The next step: The dental school willbe developing technology that provides students state-of-the-art learning experi-ences by working on holograms. So, when it comes to discovering new ways to teach, learn, discover and serve, thesearch continues.

Third-year dental student Rania Habib appearedin the “Driven to Discover” television ad.

Virtual Technology Advancements?

Until now, the opportunity to pursue advanced education in dental hygiene has not beenavailable in Minnesota or in the Midwest.

In December, 2007, the University of Minnesota created a new Master’s of Dental Hygiene Program to prepare leaders in the profession for practice, research, the health careindustry and academia. The new two-track program is set to begin in June, 2008. The management track will be offered in collaboration with the University’s Carlson Schoolof Management and will include a supervised internship in leading health care organizations;the education track will prepare dental hygienists for administrative and teaching roles. When students graduate or leave campus to treat patients at one of the dental school’s seven outreach sites, the group leader is the “constant” for both the group and for patients. (L to R): Third-year dental student Katie Vo, sophomore dental hygiene student Paige Christiansen, and Green Group Leader Richard Nadeau.

raditionally, the clinicalcurriculum at most dental schools was student-focused and discipline-based.Students spent their last two years of dental

school on rotations through various clinics to learn specific procedures fromdiscipline-oriented faculty. For patientsneeding several dental procedures, itmeant that treatment was often providedby more than one student and in morethan one of the dental school’s on-campusclinics. For students, the approach leftthem with excellent technical skills, buttheir experience in patient care was fragmented.

Now the educational experience haschanged. In a re-envisioned approach todental education, the School of Dentistryrestructured its clinical program for bothdental and dental hygiene students andcreated a Comprehensive Care Clinic. Here, students learn in a patient-focusedenvironment that more closely resemblesthat of a general dental practice in whichone dentist provides the full range of

dental services to each patient. While theshift from segmented patient care to acomprehensive educational and patientcare experience is not entirely new at the School of Dentistry or in U.S. dentalschools, the University of Minnesota isunique in its application.

The School of Dentistry’s new clinicalteaching model is particularly remarkablebecause it includes all of the key “players”on the dental team. Patients are nowassigned to one of eight patient care

groups, named by color, that function assmall general practices. Each group con-sists of a faculty group leader, a patientcare coordinator, a staff dental assistant, six dental hygiene students, and about 25 third- and fourth-year dental students. In addition, each group includes two inter-nationally trained dentists from the school’sProgram for Advanced Standing Students(PASS). In January, 2008, second-year dental students were assigned to the groups.

Associate Dean of Clinical AffairsRobert Hirsch compares the traditionalapproach with the new comprehensivecare model. “Previously, students left dental school with good hand skills, but a segmented experience when it comes to providing the full range of patientevaluation, diagnostic, prevention andtreatment services. They were also missingmuch of the practice management skillthat is 50 percent of the job. Now, studentslearn in the comprehensive care environ-ment of the general dental practice they’llencounter after graduation. That givesour students a leg up in practice manage-ment and enhances their education andoverall patient care.”

New Players on the Team Patient care coordinators are an integralpart of this new team, serving as the faceof the dental office, just like a clinic orprivate practice receptionist. They alsoserve a critical role in managing theassignment of patients to students in away that allows every student to becomecompetent in providing the full range of dental services.

“Patient care coordinators greetpatients, answer the phone, and scheduleappointments,” says Kathy Hughes, super-visor of the patient coordinators. “Theykeep the students’ schedules filled effi-ciently, which maximizes students’ timewith patients while it minimizes thelength of time patients must wait forappointments. Patient care coordinatorsare the first to welcome patients to thepractice and to give the patient a sense ofbelonging to that particular team, a personthey can always call if problems arise.

Making this a better place for studentsand patients, that’s everyone’s goal.”

Dental hygiene students, too, are animportant part of the new group practicemodel. “It’s pretty hard to find a dentaloffice these days that doesn’t have ahygienist as part of the team,” saysChristine Blue, director of the Division

of Dental Hygiene. “Before, dentists and dental hygienists were educated in isolation. But in a general dental practice, they work closely together as a team. We’re now educating them together sothey can understand and appreciate each other’s expertise.”

In addition, the new teaching modelrecognizes the hygienist’s role as the dentist’s collaborator, on the forefront of patient care. Associate Professor JamesGambucci, director of the ComprehensiveCare Clinic and leader of the MaroonGroup, says, “We engage dental hygienestudents in conversation and ask ‘Whatdid you see here?’” In the dental schoolclinics, senior hygienists often act asteaching assistants for second-year dental students.

From the hygienist’s perspective, saysBlue, talking with the dentist about treat-ment planning and discussing cases withthe team is critical to understanding the

myriad dental procedures that occur in practice. “We had feedback from ourdental hygiene graduates that patientsoften had additional questions about aprocedure after the dentist left the examroom. A more in-depth understanding ofprocedures helps when answering ques-tions or reviewing procedures. It’s an

extension of their patient education role. The outcome of the new comprehensivecare teaching model will be that the teamworks more efficiently and effectively, andthat means better care for the patient.”

Says senior dental hygiene studentNicole Kluempke, “Learning how dentalstudents communicate, work with assis-tants, and how they explain procedureshelps me understand their world as dentalprofessionals. On the other hand, dentalstudents learn what dental hygiene isabout. They can grasp that our job is about more than just ‘cleaning teeth.’It’s about forming a relationship with the patient to increase oral hygiene careand preventative practices.”

All of this demonstrates the qualityand sophistication of the dental hygieneprogram at the University of MinnesotaSchool of Dentistry, says Dean PatrickLloyd. “This is the only dental hygieneprogram in Minnesota that grants a baccalaureate degree and is affiliated with a dental school. Dentists need toknow what hygienists do, respect the discipline, and know how to work together.Educating dentists without dental hygienists is like educating physicianswithout nurses.”

Learning From Each OtherFinally, junior and sophomore dental students round out the team. Fourth-yeardental student Nick Bakkum emphasizesthe importance of these new faces in theclinic. “I think one of the major benefitsto the new Comprehensive Care Clinicgroups is that third- and fourth-year student dentists are now in the clinicstogether,” he says. “I believe this allowsthe junior students a chance to observehow the seniors interact with theirpatients, and gives them an opportunity

to ask questions about clinic protocolsand administrative paperwork.”

That’s a learning experience that’s valued by all students. Says dental hygienestudent Kluempke, “Working together, we learn from each other and improveour skills.”

For second-year dental students, theopportunity is equally meaningful. Underthe new educational model, their transi-tion into patient care experiences occursduring the last semester of their secondyear of dental school, a full semester earlierthan in previous years. They work inpatient clinics as chairside dental assistantsand provide dental prophylaxis (teethcleaning) for patients with less complexhealth histories and dental needs.“They’re only allowed to assist and perform prophys,” says Bakkum, “but thisis great because it allows them to becomemore acclimated to the group clinicsbefore seeing patients of their own.”

“Assisting is a great way to transitioninto the clinics,” says second-year dentalstudent Jamie Evavold. “It allows you to become comfortable with the clinic as a space––where the different clinics are actually located, clean versus dirty dispensing, accounting, patient admis-sion, radiology, and so on. A huge benefitis learning the sequence of differentappointments, observing the facultyinteraction, and specialty consultations. And then being able to put all of theseexperiences into practice when we haveour own patients in perio recall appoint-ments has been an excellent learningexperience.”

Evavold believes the confidence gainedthrough this introduction to patient care sets the stage for a more comfortabletransition into the clinical years of herdental education program which arespent treating patients. “I can’t speak foreveryone, but I was extremely nervouswhen I first entered the clinic. It’s the firstreal patient interaction we have. You cansimulate the experience a number oftimes, but it’s not until you have truepatient interaction that all of the piecesfall into place.”

She says, “Our interaction with thethird- and fourth-year students is reallywhat makes this experience worthwhileand I’d like to think they gain just asmuch from the mentoring roles they haveassumed. We soak up as much as they

have to offer. It can be simple things likewhere to find the composite resin restora-tive materials at dispensing, or it can beadvice on how to handle complex treat-ment plans. What I love to learn are thetips that can’t always be taught or learnedin the pre-clinic, the advice that comesfrom personal experience, both successesand failures.”

Leader of the PackSays Gambucci, “Patients have alwaysreceived excellent care here. And we have educational programs in six dentalspecialty areas, so they have access tosome of the best specialists in the world. But before we transitioned to a compre-hensive care model, the clinic experiencewas different.” Until now, there was no mechanism whereby the same facultymember oversaw all treatment.

Now, like the coach of a sports team, each of the eight group leaders serves as

a point of continuity, responsible forpatient management as well as academicoversight. Says third-year dental studentEllen Dufresne, “As a student, it’s reallyhelpful to work with the same instructorson a regular basis. They get to know usand our abilities better than if we switchedinstructors frequently. They can also better understand our weaknesses andstrengths in terms of patient care andhelp us accordingly.

“I really do appreciate always havingone instructor at the school who knowswhat is going on with my patients andwho can sit down and discuss their treatment. I learn much more from this relationship than I would if I were work-ing with multiple instructors all the time, trying to track them down when I havequestions. In addition, it makes it easierfor students to get an idea of what theinstructors they work with expect fromthem in clinic.”

SPRING 20 08 DENTISTRY 8

Patients also benefit because they areassigned to a group and stay with thatgroup. No matter what the treatment planrequires, “we create the roadmap,” saysGambucci. One important new experi-ence students pick up is learning aboutwhen it’s appropriate to make referrals.“Even if we refer patients to other specialtyclinics,” he says, “we create the [treatment]plan and oversee their care. We’re driving the bus.”

Says Dufresne, “Patients really likecoming back to the same place and seeingthe same instructors working with useach time.”

Of course, senior students from eachgroup come and go much more than theyused to, making consistent team leadershipall the more important. Students nowspend up to two months treating patientsin community-based service-learning

experiences. They travel the state in amobile dental office, treat patients at two Twin Cities’ inner-city clinics and at a senior citizen health center. They alsodo rotations at community clinics inWillmar and Hibbing, and study in othercountries. So, says Richard Nadeau, leaderof the Green Group, “As the students domore outreach outside the school and in foreign exchange programs, the new

[clinic] model enhances continuity ofcare because the group leader and othergroup students who are familiar with thepatient can step in to provide that care.”Even after a student caregiver graduates, patients return to the same group and a familiar group leader. That builds thepatient’s confidence in the group and in the long-term quality of care.

But, beyond management and super-vision, group leaders play a more subtle, and perhaps more critical part; they arethe ultimate role models. Says Gambucci,“It’s in the clinic that students learn aboutthe subtleties of patient interaction, thenon-dental issues that are part of patientcare and treatment. Students are alwayswatching us and observing how we talk to patients. The relationship between adentist and patient is an intimate one. We’re close to the face of a patient who

is awake and alert. Patients have to feelcomfortable with their dentist––It’s a dramatic responsibility.”

He says, “We expect technical excel-lence, that’s a given, but it’s not just abouthow we treat teeth. Two patients with the same oral condition might have very different treatment plans based on non-dental issues such as medical history, financial resources, combinations of

medication, mental health, social supportand other issues. After the patient’s visit, we discuss why I handled onepatient one way and another patient differently. Teaching and learning in acomprehensive care model allows group

leaders to more efficiently teach that part.It provides an opportunity to take whatstudents are seeing and broaden the discussion to include similar cases andsituations.” He weaves in anecdotes and experiences from his own private practice. Says Gambucci, “Students areengaged. They learn from dialogue, and from our stories.”

Patients Versus ProceduresMake no mistake; students must still fulfill technical requirements. But whilethe traditional approach to evaluatingstudent progress focused on a quantita-tive accounting of the number of proce-dures performed, the focus under the comprehensive care model is on gainingcompetency. The result is a better experience for both students and patients.Says Hirsch, “With the requirement-basedsystem, there was a laundry list of proce-dures students had to fulfill to graduate. For example, a student might have tocomplete 100 amalgams and 50 compos-ite restorations. So, the problem was that you weren’t as focused on the care of the patient as on completing therequirements. You saw not Mrs. Jones the patient, but Mrs. Jones the source of three amalgam restorations.”

Gambucci elaborates: “Even thoughthe current curriculum is no longerrequirement-based, a broad range of clinical experience is still necessary forstudents to achieve and demonstratecompetence across all of the disciplinesthat make up the practice of general dentistry. Patient care coordinators play a huge role in assigning patients to

students in a manner that ensures thisbroad experience, and each of the clinicaldisciplines––operative dentistry, prostho-dontics, periodontics, and so on––stillrequire extensive experience and a highlevel of performance as a precondition for students to sit for their clinical competency exams.

“Students who achieve this level ofperformance are able to sit for their competency exams sooner than those whorequire more time,” says Gambucci. “Thesystem as it now exists allows us to movestudents along at a pace consistent withtheir performance. Comprehensivecare––that is, one student providing allnecessary care to each patient assigned to them––has always been the ideal.”

And, when the emphasis shifts tocomprehensive care, students begin towork together the way they will, ideally, when they practice in a private dentaloffice. Says hygiene student Kluempke, “If an exam needs to be completed, adental student can jump in during thehygiene appointment. We can help each other with finishing requirementsmore easily.”

Behind the ScenesThe shift to a focus on providing comprehensive care is part of a trend in dental education. The school’s imple-mentation of a comprehensive care experience began in 2001 under the direction of Assistant Professor Dan Skaar (Department of Developmentaland Surgical Sciences) with a focus onfourth-year dental students, and it has been evolving since then.

When Robert Hirsch arrived inSeptember of 2005 and took the helm as associate dean of clinical affairs, helaunched a committee composed of faculty and staff to refine the comprehen-sive clinic model for all students. Hirschhad instituted this model twice before, at Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine and Nova SoutheasternUniversity in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.Under the leadership of Rich Nadeau, that committee’s goal was to create a clinical education model to maximize the student learning experience, providecontinuity of care for patients during the time dental students are out of thebuilding on outreach rotations, and to efficiently utilize full time faculty.

Learning together provides opportunities for both personal and professional connections. (L to R): Britny Gonser, sophomore dental hygiene student, and Susan (Ebun) Isawumi, senior UMN-PASS student.

“We didn’t start from scratch,” Hirschsays, “We’re building from what wasestablished here already. We’re ever trying to evolve and refine.”

Restructuring the clinical educationexperience has meant a lot of change forfaculty, too. For example, dental hygieneand dental faculty now share the teachingresponsibilities for all students in theirclinic group. The dental hygiene academicyear was extended from a nine-month

to a year-round program to coincide withthe dental students’ academic calendarand allow both groups of professionals-in-training to learn together in classroomsand clinics. Although dental and dentalhygiene students were already taking four courses together––radiology, peri-odontology, histology and embryology, and pediatric dentistry––now they alsotake practice management together. The course encourages open discussionon topics such as philosophy of practice, patient management, quality assurance, practice management models, utilizationof allied dental personnel, new workforcemodels and interviewing skills.

Though changing the clinical teachingmodel has been a considerable effort, by all accounts, the new model hasexceeded expectations. “There has beenwonderful student-to-student interaction,”says Nadeau.

“This structure is the best I’ve seen,”says Gambucci.

Blue adds, “The thing that hasemerged that impresses me the most ishow happy students are. They want to be there. You get a real sense of the teamand interaction with faculty. Students get to know each other, collaborate to meet requirements and ask each other questions. There’s a level of energy andenthusiasm I’ve never seen before.”

verybody likes to feelneeded. Matt Sieversprobably has never feltas needed as he did during the four weekshe spent in Willmar,Minnesota, last January.

A fourth-year dental student fromDuluth, Sievers was among the first tocomplete a senior rotation at the new RiceRegional Dental Clinic, which opened in December in Rice Memorial Hospital. The clinic is owned by the hospital butstaffed by University of Minnesota students under faculty supervision. Itprovides much-needed dental care on asliding fee schedule to uninsured and low-income residents of 12 counties in south-central Minnesota––8 of which have beenidentified by the federal government aslacking adequate access to dental care.

“It was amazing to see the level of dental need there was in the ruralcommunities,” Sievers says. “There was rampant decay, lots and lots of dentalneeds. It was really great to be caring forthese patients…It was very fulfilling.”

Over the course of his Willmar rotation, Sievers had the opportunity to perform a full range of procedures, including infant exams, extractions, composites, and amalgams. Thanks to hisefforts and those of the other dental anddental hygiene students, hundreds of arearesidents who were desperately in need of dental care now are able to chew, smile, and enjoy a life free of problems that have

plagued them for months, and in someinstances, years.

“It’s just a really cool combination ofthings that came together––the University, the hospital, the area dentists, and ofcourse many, many contributions fromfoundations and [others],” says RiceRegional Dental Clinic AdvisoryCommittee Chair Mike Gardner, a Schoolof Dentistry alum (’80) and Willmar dentist who serves as a community connection for the effort. “They’re treating a lot of people who have beenlong needing dental care…It’s done atremendous amount of good.”

Working TogetherAccess to dental care is a challenge inmany parts of the state, and especially inrural Minnesota. So Paul Schulz, directorof outreach for the School of Dentistry, was not too surprised when Lorry Massa,CEO of city-owned Rice MemorialHospital in Willmar, approached the dental school in 2005 for help finding a way to meet the burgeoning dentalneeds in the area.

“[He] said, ‘We’ve got all these under-served patients out here, a lot on publicprograms or uninsured, who are having a hard time accessing dental care. Couldwe possibly look at working together tohelp solve that issue?’” Schulz recalls.

Dean Patrick Lloyd immediately recognized the opportunity to create asolution that would not only meetWillmar residents’ needs, but contributeto the school’s educational efforts as well. The School of Dentistry has a strongcommitment to community outreach, and a service-learning tour of duty awayfrom campus has long been part of thesenior year schedule for dental and dentalhygiene students alike. The rationale ismultifold. Students provide care topatients in need. At the same time, anaway-from-campus rotation bolsters the

educational experience by giving studentsa chance to enhance their clinical anddiagnostic skills in a realistic clinical situ-ation under community-based adjunctfaculty. It also offers valuable experienceworking with a diversity of dental needsand patient populations. And, becausehealth professions students who do rota-tions in rural areas are more likely to endup in a rural area after graduation, rota-tions away from the big city ultimatelyenhance the availability of dental care in Minnesota’s underserved counties.

At the time Massa proposed theWillmar collaboration, the dental schoolalready offered six other venues for off-campus rotations, including a mobiledental unit and a clinic in Hibbing. Butthe graduation requirements would soonbe expanded to include six to eight weeksof community outreach, so a seventhoption in Willmar would be a valuablecomplement to the existing efforts.

“The hospital was willing to look atopportunities for building a clinic in their hospital and partnering with theSchool of Dentistry,” Schulz says. “We hadthis service-learning model in Hibbingstarted about six years ago. We startedlooking at taking the model and bringingit out to Willmar.”

With support from Lloyd, the conceptbegan moving toward reality. The schoolbegan by scheduling a town hall meetingwith area dentists and health advocates to identify needs and concerns. “We had30 or 40 people attend, an overwhelmingamount of support for this concept,” he says. The plan also received a strong vote of confidence from the MinnesotaDental Association.

The next step was raising money to build and operate the facility. A DentalInnovations Grant from the MinnesotaDepartment of Health started the ball rolling.

“Then it just kind of grew from there,” Schulz says. With state and federalgrants, $500,000 from the 2006 legislatureand generous contributions from other public- and private-sector partners

(see box on page 12), the dental schooland hospital eventually raised more than $2 million not only to construct and outfitthe new facility, but also to help cover thefirst three years of operating costs.

Overwhelming ResponseAfter two long years of planning, plasterdust, fundraising, and recruiting localprofessional staff, the hospital-owned and -operated clinic opened in December2007. The response was immediate andoverwhelming. Even though publicity was minimal––prospective patients mainlyheard about the facility through localsocial service agencies––the clinic fielded92 phone calls in the first half day it wasopen. In the first 12 days of operation, it hosted 171 patient visits.

“Our phones have been constantlyringing,” says clinic director RobertErickson. “It’s been busy since day one.” A School of Dentistry alumnus (’74) whospent the past 30 years in private practicein Madison, Wisc., Erickson was recruitedin a national search to lead the effort asan adjunct faculty member.

a top, bilingual clinic staff, Erickson (orone of several area dentists who serve asadjunct faculty), and up to four dentaland two dental hygiene students. Facilitiesare fantastic; the clinic boasts all digitalradiographs, integrated practice softwarewith electronic patient records, even aceiling-mounted lift for transferringwheelchair patients.

Students, not surprisingly, are delightedas well. For them the clinic provides anumber of unique benefits. Because thefaculty to student ratio is better, they

see more patients each day than theywould in the school’s on-campus clinics, which is great experience, Schulz says, forhoning the time management skills they’llneed in practice. The setting is as real as it gets, with morning meetings, opportu-nities for four-handed procedures, andjust about every kind of dental conditionthey could dream of. The top-notchequipment is a step beyond what’s available in the on-campus clinics.

“The clinic was just phenomenal. It has state-of-the-art facilities and a greatstaff,” says Zach Hazelton, a fourth-yeardental student from Bemidji. “It passedmy expectations. It just blew me away.”

“It was like actually working in a [private] dental office,” says senior dentalhygiene student Amy McNamara, whosays several patients drove more than an hour to come to the clinic during her two-week service in January. “Thenumber of patients we had and the timeframe really improved my skill level and my speed.”

In addition to working in the clinic, students on rotation at Rice RegionalDental Clinic visit classrooms in the community, teaching children aboutproper oral hygiene techniques andencouraging them to consider careers indentistry. To help students keep up withtheir own education while off campus, the clinic is equipped to receive livebroadcasts from the dental school, such as “Clinical Grand Rounds” continuingdental education programs that are nowoffered via interactive television.

Best of all, students agree, is the satisfaction of accomplishing that educa-tion while making a real difference in the lives of people.

“It’s a very needed thing out there,”Sievers says. “It’s a blessing for the community and for the students.”

“Now I know for sure I’m doing theright thing, and doing what I want to do,”Hazelton says. And he’s empowered aswell. “A lot of things I learned at that clinic I can carry into my practice.”

Just Getting StartedThe Rice Regional Dental Clinic is affiliated with the Minnesota Area Health Education Center (AHEC) program, established by the University of Minnesota in 2002 to provide community-based experiences for health profession students while at the sametime meeting health care needs of underserved populations throughout the state. All told, School of Dentistry on-campus clinics have 104,000 patient-

visits annually. In addition, there were10,000 patient-visits last year at theschool’s community outreach sites, whichalso include a mobile dental unit, ruralclinics in Hibbing and Howard, S.D., and three clinics in the Twin Cities. It’sexpected that the new Willmar facilitywill have an additional 5,000 patient-visits annually.

The academic and community partnership that grew from a good idea at Willmar makes it a great addition toother AHEC programs, and one Schulz is particularly proud of. The fact that theclinic is in a hospital setting opens theopportunity for future interprofessionalopportunities as well.

“Now we’re trying to look at how else we could utilize this clinic for other specialty areas in the School ofDentistry––for example, pediatric dentistry and endodontics––so they can gain more experience treatingpatients from underserved populations as well as in specialty care,” he says.“We’re not finished. We’re just getting started.”

Combination thera-pies (called highlyactive antiretroviraltherapy or HAART)have been successfulin the clinical management of

HIV infection and have saved millions of lives worldwide. Yet, drug side effectsand the evolution of drug resistance aremajor obstacles to the success of the combination therapy.

Now, researchers in the School of Dentistry’s Institute for MolecularVirology (IMV), in partnership with the University of Minnesota’s Center for Drug Design, are working on a novelapproach to anti-HIV therapy that targetsthe high mutation rate of the virus. HIV’s notorious ability to mutate hasthwarted efforts to developed a thera-peutic cure and vaccine.

Faculty member and IMV DirectorLouis Mansky and postdoctoral fellowChristine Clouser (Diagnostic andBiological Sciences) are testing a combi-nation therapy, attempting to elevate themutation rate and cause the virus tomutate itself to death, a concept calledlethal mutagenesis or error catastrophe.

Experiments conducted with HIV in cell culture have discovered synergyamong the drug combination for reducing viral infectivity. Importantly, the drug combination therapy shows very low cellular cytotoxicity, which isimportant for the long-term managementof HIV infection.

The IMV lab is “ground zero” for HIV research at the School of Dentistry. In protective garments are Lou Mansky and Christine Clouser.

The charts below represent the unaudited revenue sources and expenses of the School of Dentistry for fiscal year 2007.

Income Notes

The School of Dentistry’s total revenues were approximately $65.7 milliondollars in FY 2007, which represents a 16.0% increase from FY 2006. Theseincreased revenues are primarily the result of a change in the University’s methodof allocating State of Minnesota legislative funding. In addition, increases inClinical Revenue, Tuition and Fees, and research revenues were significant.

Tuition and Fees increased by approximately 18.5% to a total of $12.9 million dollars. Increases are attributed to a 4.5% increase in tuition rates, increased revenue resulting from the first full year of the Program for AdvanceStanding Students (PASS) which enrolled six students in its inaugural year andten students for the second year, and the continued impact of the upwardadjustment of class size (from 85 to 96 students) for the Doctor of DentalSurgery program (initiated in 2003).

Research revenues increased 16.3% from $11.6 million in FY 2006 to $13.5 million in FY 2007 as a result of large multi-year grants received in prior years reaching their conclusion. Research revenues will decrease significantly in FY 2008 as the more difficult current national research environment is reflected in reduced new grant funding.

O&M allocations increased 64.7% in 2007 to $15.1 million. The increase is attributed to a change in the accounting methodology of the University ofMinnesota in allocating O&M funds to all tuition-generating colleges. As anoffset, the University also allocated centralized expenses that had previouslybeen funded at the central university level in prior years. Although gross revenue from State O&M funding for the School of Dentistry increased 64.7%,net recurring O&M funding, after central university cost pool allocations, actually decreased 3%. State O&M funding is continuing to decrease as a percentage of overall school funding.

The balance of revenues from all other sources saw a 3.0% decrease fromFY 2006 levels. Clinical revenue increased 4.5%, after adjusting for the impact ofthe elimination of the GPR clinic revenue. Increases resulted from the positiveimpact of curriculum changes and efficiencies in patient and payer management.

Expenses Notes

The school’s overall expenditures for FY 2007 totaled $65.0 million, anincrease of approximately 18.0% from FY 2006. This increase is largely attributable to the aforementioned change in revenue and expense allocationaccounting methodology by the University of Minnesota budget process. After adjusting for this accounting change, the significant net expense changes resulted from an overall increase in faculty and staff compensation of 3.25%,additional research expenditures commensurate with research revenue increasesand clinical expense increases commensurate with revenue increases.

Clinical Activity and Instruction net expenses increased approximately 8.2%in FY 2007. Changes were the result of an internal restructuring of clinical andinstructional activity, increased investments in faculty retention, infrastructureand technology enhancements, and staff, faculty and researcher hires (in vari-ous disciplines), and increased expenses related to infection control processes.

Research expenses increased proportionally to the increase in research revenues. We are aggressively pursuing additional research opportunities befitting our position as a top ten research institution.

Administration and Development expenses increased by approximately 31%.The increase can be attributed to development activities related to the simula-tion clinic project, accreditation expenditures, and capital projects within thedental school.

Student Services and Scholarships increased 1% increase from FY 2006, consistent with the School of Dentistry’s commitment to increasing studentfinancial assistance.

Central Allocations increased 152% as a result of the revised university allocation process. This increase was partially offset by increased allocations of O & M funding.

As the population of the state of Minnesota becomes morediverse, the School of Dentistry seeks to broaden the diversity ofits student population, too. That’s one of the many goals of theschool’s new assistant dean of admissions and diversity, NatyLopez. She arrived in Minnesota in September, 2007. Since then, along with chairing the admissions committee, she has estab-lished a variety of programs to introduce students from ruralcommunities and under-represented minority populations to the profession of dentistry in general, and to the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in particular.

One example is the upcoming “Summer Dental SchoolExperience,” a week-long program for 20 sophomore and juniorundergraduate students from underserved rural and minoritycommunities, those from economically challenged families, thoseof African American, Hispanic and American Indian communi-ties, and those who are the first in their family to go to college. These students will learn more about the profession, the DAT,applying to dental school, and about the undergraduate course-work they must complete to be accepted. They’ll also hear fromminority dental students and dentists about their experiences as students and professionals. The program seeks to help students become well qualified and prepared to apply. “Theymust be qualified,” says Lopez. “We don’t want diversity just for the sake of diversity.”

Lopez arrives in Minnesota after almost twenty years of experience at the University of Pennsylvania. She received a nursing degree and a master’s of education in guidance andcounseling from the University of the Philippines and later aPh.D. in health professions education from Penn. She began herwork at Penn’s School of Dental Medicine as a counselor for foreign dentists. She is co-founder of the STEP Program at PennDental, a recruitment program for underrepresented minorityhigh school students in Philadelphia. She later co-directed theschool’s Program for Advanced Standing Students, and was assistant dean in the Office of International Relations where she developed international programs to facilitate dental studentsspending four to six weeks studying abroad. She was also co-director of the World Health Organization CollaboratingCenter at Penn where research focused on, for example, maternal transmission of HIV in Malawi.

One of her goals is to prepare the school’s students, facultyand staff for an increasingly diverse group of students. At thesame time, she’s wondering why so few minority applicants tothe School of Dentistry come from Minnesota. “This year therewere only seven applications from Native Americans and none of those were from Minnesota,” she says. “There were 29 applica-tions from Hispanics, only four from Minnesota, and 27 from

African Americans, only two from Minnesota. We have a lot of work to do.”

One answer she sees is informing and inspiring Twin Citieshigh school students who may not have professional role modelsthat might make them aspire to a career in dentistry. She’s working with existing programs of the Academic Health Center’sCareer Center and local minority dentists, as well students fromthe school’s Global Perspectives interest group to speak to students and mentor them. “We want to give them something to dream about,” she says.

General John W. Vessey will deliver the commencementaddress at graduation ceremonies on May 16, 2008, at the Ted Mann Concert Hall. Distinguished in both times of warand peace, General Vessey’s thoughts about effective leader-ship, public service, personal responsibility, and maintainingan enduring sense of “place” in Minnesota are inspirational.

Born and raised in Minnesota and a current resident of Garrison, Minn.,General Vessey is a decorated soldier, diplomat and advisor to presidents whosedistinguished 46 years of military servicebegan when he enlisted in the MinnesotaNational Guard in 1939 and officially concluded in 1985 with his three-yearterm as chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs

of Staff. He is the recipient of numerous honors, including thePurple Heart and, in 1992, the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In St. Paul, the GeneralJohn Vessey Jr. Leadership Academy bears his name.

Program for Advanced Standing Students (PASS): The inauguralclass of six students will graduate in May. PASS is an educationalprogram for graduates of dental schools outside of the U.S. and Canada seeking an opportunity to earn a U.S. dentaldegree and to potentially practice in Minnesota. PASS studentscomplete an eight-week orientation and pre-clinical lab experi-ence, plus two weeks of rotations in the school’s patient clinics. They then complete the last two years of dental school. Theprogram offers a flexible approach to increased enrollment andmakes it possible to respond more quickly to changing work-force needs than with a traditional four-year curriculum.

A new student leadership training program for student officersand volunteers met for the first time in March. Funding for theprogram comes, in part, from a donation by School of Dentistryalumnus Dan Middaugh (’61) who supported programs todevelop student leadership skills at the University of WashingtonSchool of Dentistry where he was a faculty member.

Minnesota’s chapter of the American Student Dental Association(ASDA) hosted the annual District 8 meeting on November 10at the Radisson Hotel. About 35 Minnesota students attendedalong with 25 students from Creighton University and theUniversities of Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri-Kansas City. The agenda featured discussion of ASDA and political action committee goals, chapter updates, and a lecture on the oraleffects of methamphetamines. Dean Patrick Lloyd welcomedthe group and presented his perspective on dentistry’s challenges and opportunities. Students toured the dentalschool and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs JudithBuchanan demonstrated new teaching technology in the simulation clinic. ASDA is a national student-run organizationthat introduces students to lifelong involvement in organizeddentistry and provides services, information, education, representation and advocacy.

The School of Dentistry will host student researchers at the2008 Midwest Student Research Symposium, April 19, 2008.Approximately 50 students and some research deans frommember schools will attend. Last year, the School of Dentistryfunded travel for all 19 student members of the SummerResearch Program to attend the 2007 symposium at theUniversity of Iowa College of Dentistry where they presentedtheir research using an oral and poster format in a non-competitive environment designed to showcase researchaccomplishments and promote careers in dental education and research.

Give a Smile, Get a Smile: On February 2, the school’s fourthannual Give Kids a Smile Day event attracted more than 180student volunteers and about 50 faculty and staff who providedfree dental care to 110 children. The student-coordinated eventwas meticulously organized and the day ran without a hitch.New this year: patient appointments were scheduled for 90 minutes to allow time to provide additional treatment for those with more extensive oral health needs.

First- and second-year dental students helped in registration, served as patient escorts throughout all stops in the treatmentprocess, and assisted third- and fourth-year dental studentsand pediatric dentistry residents who treated patients. Anendodontic resident provided consults. In addition to treatment,

the young patients received oral health education instruction.Parents and guardians were advised about services provided, received recommendations on untreated needs, and learnedhow to contact the school for follow-up care.

Give Kids a Smile Day is the annual, national event created to provide free dental care to low-income children and highlight dental access challenges of uninsured and underinsured patients.

A special congratulations and thank you to dental studentco-coordinators Ellen Dufresne and Nicole Amundson, and dental hygiene student co-coordinators Sarah Sting andErin Sikkink, for a fun day and a job well done.

DENTISTRY SPRING 20 08 19

A Letter from the PresidentGreetings once again from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry AlumniSociety––SODAS. As we move toward spring and the snow begins to give way to thewarming temperatures, thoughts of transitions and new beginnings come to mind.

There are a lot of transitions and new beginnings happening at the School ofDentistry and your alumni society makes every effort to be involved. This pastNovember the new pre-clinical simulation clinic was dedicated and the alumni society is proud of the fact that a large percentage of the over 11 million dollars raised for thistruly forward thinking project, was donated by School of Dentistry alumni and friends!

Another new beginning is our focus on leadership. The alumni society sponsored a leadership training event for dental students in March, which was a huge success.Discussions on leadership from dental alumni with the students helped to shed light on the leadership roles that students can play in dentistry. We look forward to continuing to help foster the dental leaders of tomorrow.

I am excited for the upcoming Minnesota Dental Association’s Star of the Northmeeting. It is always a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and talk about the good old days. I hope you can stop by the SODAS booth at the meeting. For the firsttime this year the alumni society will be able to sell your favorite School of Dentistryand Golden Gopher sweatshirts, caps, mugs and other fun items. The Dean’s reception isalways one of the highlights of the weekend, where people who make a real difference indentistry can be recognized. This year our congratulations go out to outstanding dentaland dental hygiene alumni, Dr. Tom Sitzer and Ms. Christine Blue.

If you have been thinking about ways to become more involved with your Alma Mater, joining the School of Dentistry Alumni Society Board may be the right opportunity foryou. As a member, you’ll strengthen your ties with the School, the University, and theUniversity of Minnesota Alumni Association; you’ll develop a stronger network of colleagues and professional relationships; you’ll impact the lives of current and futuredental and dental hygiene students; and you’ll have fun! Or if you prefer, you are alsowelcome to connect with the SODAS as a member of one of our working committees––Cap & Gown/Graduation Fund, Golf Classic, Alumni Honors, Student/AlumniProgramming, and Nominating.

We believe that our students are the future of the profession and that alumni relationsthat begin in dental school will last a lifetime. Recent graduates receive a complimentaryone-year membership to the alumni society, granting access to all the benefits membership has to offer. What most people do not realize is that current students canalso enjoy the benefits of membership. A student membership is only $15. If you wouldlike to sponsor a student membership, please contact Ms. Annie Pennola in the AlumniRelations office at 612-625-6164. If you are a current alumni society member, thank youfor your participation. When it is time to renew your membership, I would ask you toconsider upgrading your membership to a Life Membership. Life Membership helps theAlumni Society in so many ways. It perpetuates your gift of membership year after yearand reduces the costs of having to solicit your membership each time it is up for renewal. If you are not currently a member, I would ask you to consider joining. What better gift to your profession than to help those who follow in your foot steps.

It has been an honor for me to serve as your president over this last year and I wouldencourage all of you to get involved on some level with the alumni society. Whether it is as a participating member, committee or board member, there is a place for you!Don’t be a stranger. Let us hear from you.

Sincerely,

loren taple, d.d.s. ’89President, School of Dentistry Alumni Society

2007 Donors

We strive for accuracy when preparing these lists and apologize for any errors that may appear. We invite you to notify the Development Office (at 612-625-1657) of any corrections.

Dear Friends,

Sincerely,

patrick m. lloydDean

Donors to the School of Dentistry 2007

2007 was a milestone year in the history of the School of Dentistry. InNovember, we celebrated the launch of our new Simulation Clinic, naming the main learning lab as the 3M Foundation Simulation Clinic in honor of thefoundation’s $1 million contribution. The project, several years in the planningand a short nine months in construction, was the most comprehensive trans-formation of our teaching facilities in more than three decades and our mostsuccessful capital campaign since the opening of Moos Tower in 1975.

The completion of this ambitious initiative was made possible by alumnusDr. Arnie Hill who chaired the campaign and his dedicated group of volun-teer campaign cabinet members, and by the hundreds of staff, faculty, alumniand friends who so generously contributed. Private support for the newteaching facility totaled over $3.5 million––approximately one-third of theproject cost. The number of donors doubled in a single year and now num-bers nearly 900. We continue to encourage contributions to the SimulationClinic Equipment Endowment Fund as a way to provide ongoing supportfor equipment maintenance and allow us to capitalize on the availability of new dental education technology.

We also thank all contributors who supported a variety of important initiatives, including efforts chaired by alumni Drs. Kurt King and Dan Shawto support our new pediatric dentistry lectureship in honor of Dr. RobertFeigal. Also significant this year was support, through the Dental HygieneFund and the Dean’s Dentistry Fund for Achievement, for initiatives thatbenefit students, staff, faculty and alumni.

To each of you who supported the school with your contributions during 2007, I extend my most sincere ‘thank you’ for investing in dentaleducation at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.

This list is based on outrightgifts, pledge payments and deferred pledge payments.

*President’s Club Members. The President’s Club recognizes the University’s most generous benefactors.

“I feel fortunate to help the University of

Minnesota School of Dentistry to teach

and expand. I was born in Poland and I am

a holocaust survivor. The University of

Minnesota gave me the opportunity to earn DDS and MSD degrees.

Practicing for almost 50 years was my privilege.”

Faculty and staff support for the School

of Dentistry’s new Simulation Clinic was

unprecedented in the history of University

of Minnesota fundraising. A record 86% of

faculty made contributions and staff giving was generous. A special donor

recognition wall in the clinic’s main reception area acknowledges every

faculty and staff contributor, with thanks.
