Mercyhurst’s athletic teams have a rich history of success, including the women’s rowing team’s national championship in 2004. In 2010-11, the athletics department had one of the best years in school history. Mercyhurst finished 16th in the Learfield Director Cup standings. Men’s lacrosse won the national title, women’s rowing took second place at nationals, while football won 10 games on its way to a conference championship and NCAA appearance. Women’s hockey won its league title and advanced to the Elite Eight. Baseball won a school-record 42 games on its way to a PSAC Championship. Wrestling sent four grapplers to nationals. Deanna RichardHead Coach • 5th Season • Oakland ’96

Deanna Richard is in her fifth season as the Mercyhurst College women’s basketball head coach. She guided Hurst to its first .500 season since the 1999-2000 campaign, as the team went 15-15. Richard also led the Lakers to a 7-7 conference mark-the first time Mercyhurst has done that well in league action since 1997. On January 19, 2011, Richard earned her 100th career win at Mercyhurst in a 74-65 win over Clarion. The Lakers have increased their win total in each of Richard’s first four seasons. The 2011-12 roster will be the first that Richard has built on her own, but it will also be her first roster that doesn’t feature Amy Achesinski and Samantha Loadman. Achesinski was named all-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division last year. After spending her first season leading Mercyhurst in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

(GLIAC), Coach Richard and the Lakers started a new era in the PSAC in 2008-09 where they went 4-10 against the Western Division, 10-17 overall. In 2009-10 the Lakers went 12-14 overall and 4-10 in PSAC West play. In her first year at the helm, Coach Richard compiled an overall record of 7-20 and was 2-15 in conference play. The team quickly became one of the most dominant three-point shooting teams in the league, ranking fourth in three-pointers in the GLIAC. In 2007-08, Coach Richard inherited a young team, with no seniors and only one junior to go with a host of freshmen, sophomores and transfer players. She coached Amy Achesinski to Freshman of the Year and GLIAC All-South team honors in 2007-08. She fielded a balanced starting lineup, as all five starters averaged nine or more points. Her first Laker team excelled in the classroom as well, with two players making the GLIAC All-Academic team. Richard came to Mercyhurst after serving as the head coach at Olivet College for six years. Although she spent six years at NCAA Division III Olivet, Richard worked as an assistant coach at a pair of GLIAC schools - Wayne State and Ferris State. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Oakland University, playing basketball for the school from 1992-96. As well, she earned her master’s degree in sports administration from Wayne State in 2001. At Olivet, Richard built a program that had not seen much success historically. The program averaged just four wins per season in the nine years prior to her arrival, but the 2001-02 squad, her first season at the helm, went 7-17. The program steadily improved, building to a 13-14 record in 2005-06 with an 8-8 record in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). In her final year, the program reached .500 for the first time in her tenure, going 12-12 and setting a school record by finishing 9-7 in the MIAA. It marked just the third time in 29 years of Olivet women’s basketball that the team finished .500 or better.

Her Olivet squads used the three-point shot as a weapon, ranking in the Division III top 25 in three-pointers made per game in each season from 2002-03 through 2006-07. The 2006-07 team also ranked 39th in field-goal percentage. Richard played at Oakland from 1992-96 when the school was part of the GLIAC. She led her team to three straight NCAA appearances and a Great Lakes Regional Championship, and a trip to the Elite Eight in 1994-95. Mercyhurst made the Elite Eight in ‘94-’95 as well. During her senior year, Richard ranked fourth in the nation in three-point field-goals made and was named GLIAC Player of the Year, finishing her career with 1,333 career points. She was inducted into the Oakland University Hollie L. Lepley Hall of Honor on April 21, 2007. After graduating from Oakland, Richard played one year of professional basketball in Portugal for Clube Desportivo de Povoa. She helped her team to a conference championship, averaging 27.4 points, 11.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.

Courtney IvanAssistant Coach • 2nd Season • Olivet College ’07

Courtney Ivan begins her second season as an assistant coach with the Lakers. No stranger to the Mercyhurst program, Ivan was a graduate assistant coach for the Lakers’ from 2007-09 before being named the head women’s basketball and head women’s volleyball coach at Mercyhurst North East in September 2009. In 2011-12, she will focus largely on coaching defense and implementing a more aggressive style on that end of the court. Last season, Ivan played a key role in the Lakers’ first .500 season since 2000. The team went 7-7 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play,

marking its first .500 record in league action since the 1996-97 campaign. While at Mercyhurst North East, Ivan led both the women’s basketball and volleyball teams to the Western New York Athletic Conference playoffs. The basketball squad registered a 14-6 record while volleyball posted a 14-14 mark. Ivan came to Mercyhurst after spending five seasons at Division III Olivet College where Richard was head coach. During her four playing seasons at Olivet, Ivan gained coaching experience through working the college’s annual basketball camps with Richard. She also assisted with camps at Central Michigan and Northwoood. As a player, Ivan played a key role in the turnaround of the Olivet program. In her freshman season of 2003-04, Ivan helped the team to 10 wins and appeared in 25 games, starting 17. She

hit 46 percent of her shots and averaged 7.5 points per game and ranked second on the team with 5.4 rebounds per game. During her junior and senior seasons, Ivan and Olivet won 25 games, including a 9-7 conference record in 2006-07. That year, she appeared in 23 of the team’s 24 games, scoring 64 points, grabbing 2.9 rebounds per game and totaling 12 steals. Ivan also participated on the Olivet track team and was a standout performer in the javelin. She holds the school record in that event. A native of Belleville, Mich., Ivan graduated Olivet in 2007 with a bach-elor’s degree in biology with a concen-tration in pre-med and a fitness man-agement degree. In 2009, she earned a master’s in organizational leadership while at Mercyhurst College.

Amy Achesinski will continue her Mercyhurst career in 2011-12, as she begins her first season as the graduate assistant coach for Deanna Richard. Achesinski, a 2011 Mercyhurst graduate, was one of the top players in program history. The Butler, Pa., native burst onto the college basketball scene with a stellar freshman season in 2007-2008. She averaged 16.6 points and 7.6

rebounds on her way to being named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) freshman of the year. The Lakers moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) for the 2008-2009 campaign, and Achesinski’s skills translated in the new league. She was named second-team All-PSAC West as she finished third in the nation with a .594 field goal percentage. The 6-1 forward was named second-team All-PSAC West again as a junior, as she led the team in scoring, rebounding, and shots blocked for the third consecutive year. Achesinki also scored her 1,000th point and grabbed her 500th rebound in a game against Millersville on Jan. 10, 2010.

In the 2010-2011 season, Achesinski led Mercyhurst to its first postseason berth since 2000 as the Lakers won 15 games. She was selected as a first-team All-PSAC West performer as she again paced the conference in field goal percentage (59.5 percent). She was also chosen Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America Honorable Mention, Division II Bulletin All-America Honorable Mention, and Capital One / CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team. For her career, Achesinski ranks third in school history with 1,704 points and 889 rebounds. She’s also second in field goal percentage (56.8 percent) and eighth in assists with 216 helpers.

Season Preview Under Coach Deanna Richard, Mercyhurst has improved its record each of the past four seasons. After hitting the 15-win mark in 2010-11, the Lakers are looking to go over .500 for the first time since the 1999-2000.

Hurst lost its top two players from last season, including Amy Achesinski, who graduated. The Lakers will feature a different attack this season, but Richard is optimistic that the team can overcome the losses.

In its third season as a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Mercyhurst had its best season yet, going 7-7 in the Western Division. It marked the first time Hurst had finished .500 or better in league play since the 1996-97 season. That Laker squad went 9-8 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

The team had an up-and-down season, losing its first four games before going on a four-game win streak. Hurst went on another streak in the new year, beating three PSAC East schools and then winning at Lock Haven to kick off conference action. The Lakers didn’t win or lose more than three games in a row in Western Division play as they qualified for the conference tournament for the first time as members of the PSAC.

Highlights of the 2010-11 season included a trip to Alaska for three games in November, the 100th win of Richard’s Mercyhurst career, and sweeping crosstown rival Gannon in two meetings.

Hurst went 2-1 in Fairbanks, including an overtime victory over the host. On January 19, the Lakers won against Clarion, 74-65, for Richard’s milestone win. Mercyhurst hadn’t swept Gannon since the 1996-97 campaign and hadn’t beaten the Golden Knights at home since 2004.

Last year, the Lakers led the PSAC in field goal percentage, shooting at a 46.1 rate. Achesinski accounted for a large portion, as she led the league in individual field goal percentage at almost 60 percent.

Mercyhurst returns 13 players from last season and adds two newcomers. Here is a position-by-position outlook for the 2011-12 Lakers.

GUARDThe Lakers lose one guard, but return every other member of the backcourt this season. Dana Banda is back as the point guard, having started all 56 games of her career. Frederickson and Foster are back as dependable options for Richard. Megan Hoffman, Lindsey Burke, and Katie Carbee will see expanded roles in the absence of Loadman. Janeale Ronai and Abby Allen should also see playing time in the Lakers backcourt.

Others expected to compete for time on the perimeter are Jourdin Barkman, and Kristi Ewanick, and newcomer Lindsay Stamp.

Banda, a 5-8 junior, started all 30 games last season. She led the team with 3.7 assists per game (11th in the conference) and also scored 8.9 points per game. Banda made 33 3-pointers and compiled 42 steals, while averaging over 36 minutes a contest-most in the PSAC.

Foster is a 6-0 junior who started 28 games last season. She was fourth on the team in scoring at over seven points a game. She shot 48.4 percent from the field grabbed 38 offensive rebounds-third-most on the team. She will need to be even more of a threat to score this season.

Frederickson appeared in all 30 games a season ago. She shot 55.4 percent from the floor while averaging 6.1 points a game. A versatile player, Frederickson should contribute more on both ends of the court in 2011-12.

Hoffman, another senior, started 21 games last year. She was second on the team with 45 made 3-pointers as she average six points a game. Many of Hoffman’s skills are of the intangible variety-diving on the floor for loose balls, taking charges, and making the pass that leads to an assist.

Burke appeared in 24 contests last season, averaging 2.4 points. She is a vocal leader on the floor and should see more minutes

in her junior year. Carbee is a 5-10 senior, who appeared in 19 games a season ago. She is a fundamental player who can play inside as well.

Ronai, a grad student, played 20 games in 2010-11. She has fought injuries throughout her career, but has been a spark for the team in the past. Ronai scored six points in a win over Clarion last January, hitting a 3-pointer to go along with two rebounds. Allen appeared in 18 games last year, scoring a season-high 11 points in a win over Dominican (Calif.) in November. She is another player who has battled injuries in her time at Mercyhurst.

Barkman is another redshirt freshman expected to see time in 2011-12. She is 5-10 and has a quick release, giving her an advantage over other players her size. Ewanick played in 10 games in 2010-11, making her lone field goal of the season against Mansfield in January. Stamp, a Mercyhurst Prep product, is a 5-10 freshman. Richard has high hopes for the rookie, who was named first-team all-state as a junior in high school.

FORWARDHow Hurst handles losing Achesinski, one of the best players in school history, will go a long way towards determining the team’s success in 2011-12 The team will look to several inexperienced players to play inside, however. Kelsey Trosch, Adele Campbell, and Laura McCauley are the post players on this year’s roster. Freshman Kelley McBroom will redshirt in 2011-12.

In the post, Trosch will likely have the first shot at filling Achesinski’s shoes. A 5-10 junior, Trosch appeared in 17 games last year. She has a wide array of post moves and will need to exploit them to help the Lakers this season. Campbell is a sophomore who can play inside and outside. She played in 12 games last season, including a six-point game against Urbana in December. McCauley redshirted in 2010-11 and should be ready to contribute right away. The 6-footer could be a factor early in the season, especially if her inside game catches up with her passing skills.
