Today's Readings

Introduction to the Gospel

For the Jewish people, to eat flesh and drink blood was unthinkable; it was abhorrent. Now here is Jesus saying that his follow-ers must eat his flesh and drink his blood in order to have life. Many turned away from Jesu at hearing him say this. Jesus then asks the disciples if they too will leave him. Peter answers on their behalf with a wonderful acclama-tion of faith. The giving of Jesus’ flesh and blood for the life of the world is a refence to the savific na-ture of this death and the inauguration of a new cov-enant through his sacrifice.

This passage comes after Jesus has fed the multitudes with five barley loaves and two fish but in his explana-tion of this sign, Jesus refers to himself as ‘living bread’, ‘bread from heaven’ which gives eternal life. The ances-tors who followed Moses out of Egypt had been sent manna from heav-en to nourish them in the dessert, but they had still died. The food which Je-sus offers, himself, will lead to eternal life! The words spoken by Jesus would have been shocking to those who heard them.

Breaking Open the Gospel

Each day a different member of the Diocesan team will share their reflection on the readings. Access it via the Diocesan website: www.aucklandcatholic.org.nz or Youtube Channel: Auckland Catholic Religious Education.

A daily video reflection on the readings is now being posted by the Auckland Diocese.

Tween Scene Leader Needed

This group for our Tween-aged parishioners (Years 6, 7 & 8) gets together at least 4 times per year for activities such as movie nights in the Parish Centre, Skateland sessions, beach days etc. As a popular part of our Parish community we are keen to see the Tween groop continue. It is a wonderful way for the young people of the Parish to stay connected after leaving primary school. Please contact Mike Jensen ([email protected]) if you can help.

Our current Tween Scene leaders are stepping down and we are looking for new volunteers.

Sunday Parish Celebration!Let’s come together to celebrate and reconnect as a faith community after the long Covid-19 lockdown! We will have a special Mass of Thanksgiving for being able to gather again as a Parish community, followed by a shared morning tea and Sausage Sizzle. This will be a wonderful way to reconnect with all of your Parish friends after the long break. Please bring a plate to share.

Sunday 28 June after the 9.30am Mass.
