STUDIED PHOTOGRAPHY WITH US AT BOTH COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY-LEVEL
Choosing a university was a very difficult process for me. On the one hand I was excited to move out and meet new people, and on the other I had enjoyed my two-year photography diploma course at Farnborough so much I didn’t want to leave. I made the decision to complete my photography degree at University Centre Farnborough and have never looked back! The combination of small class sizes and dedicated lecturers meant that, unlike large universities, I could meet with my tutors as often as I needed, allowing my work to continuously progress. In the five years I spent here I learned far more than I could ever have asked for. With the knowledge and confidence the courses gave me, I have been able to get an incredible job at a top advertising agency, working in the centre of London.

A Levels are an exciting chance to explore the subjects you are passionate about - in real depth.
At Farnborough, you will study in a friendly department with its own dedicated area and highly qualified lecturers. Students love the welcoming environment here, which feels a lot different to school. There are more chances to ask questions and plenty of time for individual support and feedback.
A Levels take two years to complete and are a good choice if you want to develop a high level of academic skill. This could either be in preparation for university or to keep your career options open.
There is plenty of choice when it comes to subjects, but your decision should be based around your long-term plans. Universities may want to see that the degree you have applied for is a realistic progression from your A Level subjects. We recommend talking to us at an open event to find out what options could work best for your goals.

I wanted to study performing arts but also have a route into primary school teaching via my A Levels. I was never sure if I wanted to go down the written route or if I wanted to perform, and being able to do both courses alongside each other has helped me realise what I want to do.
I really liked the class sizes because everybody got enough attention as there weren’t too many people in the room. The teaching is the best part of the college - I’ve never had teachers who are so dedicated to helping you do well before.

I AM NOW: GOING TO STUDY COMPUTER SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SURREY
I came here from Singapore to live in the area. It was scary at first coming to a new environment, but my friends and teachers really helped me to settle in.
I completed a diploma in Singapore and I found that A Levels are much more in-depth. The teachers here are good at making the topics interesting. They really support you and are always keen to help. The smaller class sizes are great as you can easily ask questions and it’s quieter meaning you can concentrate easily.
The facilities for the course are good. There are loads of computers to use and places to study. It’s been really fun studying here and seeing my friends everyday.
I’m now going to study Computer Science at the University of Surrey, and I’m hoping to become a Software Engineer in the future to develop my own software.
EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATIONIn some cases, you can also complete an Extended Project Qualification alongside your A Levels. This project is a particularly beneficial experience if you are planning to study a degree. The opportunity to learn extra research skills will demonstrate your motivation to universities, while also developing your confidence and ability to work independently. The project could be an essay, performance, demonstration, presentation or investigation.

STUDYING: ART AND DESIGN
I AM NOW: STUDYING A FOUNDATION COURSE IN ART
I’ve always enjoyed doing art in my spare time, whether it’s a project or a one-off. I’d like to think I’m quite adventurous and would always be making things as a child. Being able to produce things in my course has this same attraction with coming up with new ideas.
Our projects are all so different, for example there’s printmaking, fine art and drawing, and abstract work. It’s impossible to get bored as there’s so much variety to
get into and there’s always new themes to think about. It’s quite a personal course too, as you spend a lot of time with the same people.
One of the main attractions for me was the support you get from the tutors. They know how to keep you on track so you can make your best progress - and be really proud of your work.
We’ve been on trips to galleries, including the Tate in London and the Anni Albers exhibition. We use these for drawing material and I’ve found they inspire me to produce my most creative work. Next, I’ll be starting a foundation course in art, this is to help me find my specialism in the subject before a degree.

STUDYING: BUSINESS
I AM NOW: STAYING AT UNIVERSITY CENTRE FARNBOROUGH FOR A BUSINESS DEGREE
I had a lot of support getting on to the level 1 course due to my limited GCSE grades, but I’ve worked very hard to complete up to level 3 and the staff and lecturers have supported me throughout my journey.
The way the lessons are presented are really good and if you have any questions all of the tutors will answer them. It’s quite a laid back environment where I felt able to put my hand up and ask a question at ease. For someone that might be struggling on the course the 1-1 tutorials would be really beneficial if they are looking for guidance.
Now I’ve finished my BTEC course with D*D*D* I’m really excited to be starting a BA (Hons) in Business Management which is also an accelerated degree so I can complete the course in 2 years. I decided to stay on at the University Centre because I am so familiar with the campus, the lecturers and all of the study areas so I think this will help me throughout the degree course.

STUDYING: ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL COOKERY
I AM NOW: WORKING FULL-TIME FOR WIMBLEDON’S MEMBERS’ RESTAURANT
I’ve always had a passion for cooking and I knew of people who had studied at Farnborough who have gone on to be successful.I learnt so much on the course and it’s very in-depth. Some days are spent cooking in the kitchen which I love, and then other days we do theory to understand the processes and science behind cooking.
I’ve taken part in many competitions during the course which has helped me progress in my career, network with top chefs and get a new job. I also get the perks of going to new places and learning in different kitchens.
The kitchen facilities at the College are very good. We’ve got some top spec new equipment and ovens which they use in professional kitchens around the country. The teachers are amazing. They have been working in kitchens and on front of house for years themselves, and so they understand your passion and want to help you become the best you can.
A catering or hospitality apprenticeship could involve working across a wide-variety of businesses. This includes bars, restaurants, cafés, conference centres, banqueting venues, hotels or contract caterers.
As a chef you would be monitoring food stocks, preparing food, and will have responsibility for areas in a busy kitchen.
The management and supervisor roles provide vital support to management teams. You would be responsible for supervising hospitality services and running shifts. Your levels of responsibility, business skills and customer relation skills would be developed throughout your apprenticeship to give you a valuable learning experience.

YASAMIN
STUDYING: EARLY YEARS
I AM NOW: STARTING A CHILDHOOD STUDIES DEGREE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WINCHESTER
I first came across the College at an open event while in year 11. I liked it here and I liked the course because I’ve always wanted to work in a childcare environment, where I can see children develop.
My favourite part of the course was the fact there was always something new to learn about. The assignments are all based around children and their development, so I feel really
prepared to start my degree. Throughout the course I went on placements to different schools and nurseries. I was shy at first but now I feel confident after the content on the course and the information and experience I got from the placements. I actually got a job in a nursery after my placement, which is good as it must have shown I have proven my skills!
The tutors supported me throughout applying to university. They told me what grades I’d need and how I can achieve them. I definitely felt prepared by the end of the year. The tutors were proud of me too so that made me feel good.

STUDYING: ENGINEERING
I AM NOW: LOOKING TO START A CAREER IN THE RAF
I like repairing things and I thought there aren’t many females in engineering, so that’s why I wanted to study engineering and get into it as a career.
I came to an open event before I applied for college and loved it. I wanted to come here straight away because it’s so open and relaxed. Living out of the area I sometimes get the train in to college but it’s really easy and the transport links are good.
I really enjoy the technical part of the course, as we get to use a lot of machinery, and learn skills like welding, which is great as I prefer practical work to theory.
I was struggling a bit at the beginning of the course, but the one-to-one tutorials really helped me catch up. My tutor helped me identify what I was behind on and where I needed to focus.
It’s definitely been easy to make friends and there are a few girls which is good especially as I came from an all-girls school. I’d like to work as an engineer for the RAF after I’ve finished my education.

I AM NOW: APPLYING FOR ENGINEERING APPRENTICESHIPS
WINNER OF LEARNER OF THE YEAR
I was brought up around cars in a big way and it’s been a part of our family for as long as I can remember, so when I visited an Open Event here I knew this course was for me. When I started the course I was really quiet and didn’t talk to anyone, but now my social confidence has got a lot better.
My classmates have similar interests which
makes it really easy to get along with everyone. I’d like to think I’ve made a few friends for life!
The workshops are really organised and there’s a good atmosphere when everyone’s working in them. I didn’t expect there to be so many cars in the workshop before I started, and how advanced some of the skills we’d learn would be.
Next, I’m applying to start an engineering apprenticeship with a local motorsport company. I feel prepared for the apprenticeship after my course but also know that there’s lots of new skills to learn.

STUDYING: PHOTOGRAPHY
I AM NOW: STARTING A PHOTOGRAPHY DEGREE HERE AT UNIVERSITY CENTRE FARNBOROUGH
Photography has always been a hobby of mine, but on a holiday to Cyprus I got really into it and wanted to do it more and more. I like taking photos of nature the most and I’ll often visit different places to take them, but I also like trying new styles of photography that come up in the course.
It doesn’t feel like at school here, we can work independently. It feels more like a workplace with other people working on other projects around. My teachers are really helpful; for example if you are
stuck they won’t suggest just one idea to you but could come up with four different ideas for you to think about, and they’ll help you find the equipment you need for a project.
I studied A Levels originally but found that they were more focused on revision and of course the stress of exams at the end. With the BTEC there’s no exam but you know your deadlines for what you need to get done over the two years.
Next I’m looking to start the photography degree here at University Centre Farnborough. I visited the degree students’ exhibition locally to get a sense of what the work involves. I feel like it will be a good continuation from the college course. I’d love to be a photographer for a magazine like National Geographic, where I could get to travel as well.

I AM NOW: RETURNING FOR MY SECOND YEAR OF THE COURSE
What I like about hairdressing is that you can be creative and make it your own. I found that the course here looked professional and meeting the tutors made me really want to come here. I like the balance we have between studying at college and doing work experience. I worked for a salon in Farnham which was good and gave me a feel of what it’d be like to work in a high street salon. It’s not that different to studying at college, and I like being able to watch other stylists.
On the course, I really like doing cuts and colouring. Working with real clients is good as they’re always friendly. I like talking to people and it helps to build your confidence. If you’re nervous about coming to college, there’s a comfortable atmosphere here that helps to settle you. Everyone in the class becomes close and it’s really enjoyable!
Hairdressing apprentices will have an artistic flair and plenty of enthusiasm. You will be helping with reception duties, cutting and styling hair, advising clients and colouring hair. Hair stylists usually work in salons, but career opportunities could also range from film sets to personal stylists.
Beauty therapists will learn massages and various treatments. Your friendly attitude will help put clients at ease, while your customer service skills will help with promotional activities. You are likely to be working in a salon, but could also work for cruise ships, hotels or hospitals.

I AM NOW: STARTING A MEDIA DEGREE AT UNIVERSITY CENTRE FARNBOROUGH
I chose Farnborough because it felt more creative than just doing A Levels and like more of a fresh start as I didn’t know anyone when I started here.
I’ve always wanted to be an actor but when I saw the behind the scenes, I realised that a career in media would
suit me more as I could be in control and I could bring my visions to life.
The facilities are the reason why I chose this college. There’s spaces for radio, tv and a bunch of computers to edit with. I feel that college is more relaxed than school, you still get your work done but it doesn’t feel like the end of the world if something goes wrong.
I’m going to stay here for my degree in media before starting a career in the industry.

I AM NOW: STARTING MY SECOND YEAR
I really like the environment; it feels more mature than school. There’s more freedom and you start to become more individual and responsible for yourself. The little things like not wearing a uniform and being treated more like an adult really make it feel different to school – plus your success is more in your own hands.
My course is very practical. Our assignments include how we rehearsed, self-critiquing, business skills, and a performance as both a group and as individuals. When it comes to group performances, you really need to think of everyone and work as a team. This will help me in later life as I can respect the needs of others and really understand other people’s views – especially as creatives.

STUDIED: APPLIED SCIENCE
I AM NOW: GOING TO BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY TO STUDY FORENSIC SCIENCE
When I was at school I found I was good at science so I really focused on this and improving my skills. I didn’t even know there was an option to study Science outside of A Levels and because the course was hands-on and practical, I was attracted to it.
We studied genetics in biology, which was new to me. It was challenging but that was what made it enjoyable. If you made a mistake in your work you’d have to keep trying until you got it right. This module helped me to decide on what I wanted to do at university. I found Mendelian genetics quite
hard, but because the teachers were so supportive, they helped guide me to the right answers so I could still figure it out for myself.
The department we’re in is quite relaxing, it’s one block just for science and everyone around you is studying similar subjects. Everyone knows each other and is really approachable. There’s lots of 1:1 time with teachers too so they can focus on your individual learning and bring out your best work.
Recently I won a silver award for BTEC Science Student of the Year 2019 across the UK. My tutor nominated me because of my high grades and attitude to learning. I’m now getting ready to go to university and feel a bit nervous about finding my feet again, but I’m really looking forward to it.
Apprentices could be working in the chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnological and analytical science services. Your tasks may be to carry out both routine and one-off laboratory testing. They could also involve a variety of technical support functions across your organisation.

STUDYING: PUBLIC SERVICES
I AM NOW: LOOKING TO STUDY CRIMINOLOGY AT UNIVERSITY
Before I started college, some relatives told me about the attention and support that teachers pay to individual students at Farnborough and that’s why I applied to come here.
I decided to look into public services because of my interest in the police. My favourite part of the course is that we aren’t always in the classroom, we do a range of activities including practical work alongside our assignments.
We have physical preparation as part of the course and the college has good facilities to be able to complete this unit. We use the on-site gym twice per week during our lessons, but we can also use this outside of college hours.
I did National Citizen Service at the start of the year which was a fantastic experience, it shows you how you have to go beyond your comfort zone.
