CHAPTER-IV FIRST PmSE OF THE TEMPLE ENTRY STRUGGLE The temple entry movement was started in Travancore by Mr.T.K. Madhavan who pressed the matter before the 15th session of the Sree Moolam Popular Assembly on 1919 and his efforts culminated in the legal success of Vaikom Satyagraha which opened the Vaikom temple roads to untouchables in 1925.' Five years after the Vaikom Satyagraha there was no organised attempt for the removal of temple entry problem. It was in 1931 that the issue of temple entry to unapproachable castes was revived in Kerala by Sri.K. Kelappan under the auspices of Kerala Congress Committee. I THE DECISION OF KERALA CONGRESS COr4MITTF,E The temple entry matter of untouchable castes came to the discussion of the Kerala State Conference held at Vadakkara i n Kerala on the first week of May 1931 under the Presidentship of Mr. Sen Gupta and the resolution of temple entry matter was accepted by the Kerala Conoress Comlttee in this conference. 2 A cornittee was appointed in the meeting of Kerala Congress comnittee held on May 21, 1931 t o choose a place in Kerala for dealing temple entry matter and suggested to submit an enquiry 2. delivered in a publj c meeti vq at Guruvayoor on April 5, 1932 was

that this satyaqraha was for establishing the freedom of worship

to Hindus, satyagraha would continue ti.11 the establishment of

thj s freedom, not only 4 n Keral a but also in Bharata there was

not a section of people known as unapproachable castes; all the

people in Bharata are not unapproachable castes but all are

Hindus, so we must attain all the rights of a Hindu; no one

should give the freedom to us, freedom is developing in us,

continue the efforts Oil1 success and struggle with non violent

scheme. 24 The satyagraha aimed to get the right of worship to

all Hindus irrespective of thejr castes. The satyaqraha was

also intended for the spiritual awakening and development of

the lower classes like pulayas and so on, said Mr.Kelappan in

one of his public speeches. 25 To establish socio-religious unity

by allowing temple-entry to untouchable castes, became the aim

of the satyaaraha. In fact the real purpose of the satyagraha

was regajn the prpstlqious stat7.s of Hinduism through the weapon

of temple entry satyagraha by uniting the Hindus after removing

the practice of pollution.
