Center ResignationsDear Rip Naquin-Delain,I read with dismay Toni Pizanie’s
column in the newest issue of yourpublication. I found her tone to be verydisrespectful of the hard work I’ve donesince I was appointed to the Board inOctober 2005. I also believe her com-ments are irresponsible, especiallywhen she well knows that I have beenmaking every effort to encourage com-munity participation in our rebuilding.
As I respect her in-depth knowl-edge of the LGBT community, I can onlyconclude that I have lost the confidenceof the very people whose support isessential for a strong and financiallysecure Community Center. Therefore, Ifeel I have no choice but to resign frommy position on the Board of the LGBTCommunity Center of New Orleans.
Joining me in tendering their resig-nations are: Dave Haynik, Co ChairShawn Johnson, Secretary CharlotteKlasson, Treasurer
Since blaming the board seems tobe her only aim, these resignationsshould be a welcome turn of events andprove that some of us do, in fact, takeoutside advice.
Sincerely, --Mary Griggs

Goodbye to vetoing health insurancefor poor children but rushing back to Wash-ington to sign a bill to keep alive a womanwhose cerebral cortex had liquefied.
Goodbye to the ban on federal fund-ing of embryonic stem-cell research.
Goodbye to the philosophy that saysthat if we give tax cuts to the rich and keepthe government from any oversight of theeconomy, prosperity will eventually trickledown.
Goodbye to the thirst for privatizingSocial Security and to the belief that thesuccess of a social safety-net program iswhat makes it a threat and should mark itfor destruction.
Goodbye to the war on unions and toa National Labor Relations Board de-voted to crushing them.
Goodbye to the principle of loyaltyabove all else, that nominates HarrietMiers to the Supreme Court and putsAlberto Gonzales in charge of the JusticeDepartment. And goodbye to that JusticeDepartment, the one where U.S. attorneyskeep their jobs only if they are willing toundertake bogus investigations of Demo-crats timed to hit the papers just beforeElection Day.
Goodbye to a Justice Departmentwhere graduates of Pat Robertson's lawschool roam the halls by the dozens, where"justice" is a joke.
Goodbye to James Dobson and ahost of radical clerics picking up the phoneand hearing someone in the White Houseon the other end.
Goodbye to the most consequential
decisions being made on the basis of oneman's "gut," a gut that proved so wrong sooften.
Goodbye to the contempt for evidence,to the scorn for intellect and book learnin',to the relentless war on science itself asa means of understanding the world.
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye to it all.Though President Obama will be
spending most of his time cleaning up themess George Bush made, we probablywon't have Dubya to kick around anymore. It's hard to imagine Bush undertakingsome grand philanthropic effort on thescale of the Clinton Global Initiative, orhopping around to international troublespots like Jimmy Carter. Republicanswon't be asking him to speak on theirbehalf, and publishers are reportedly un-interested in the prospect of a Bush mem-oir. His reign of destruction complete, Bushwill return to Texas and fill his days with themundane activities of a retiree - putteringaround the yard, reading some maga-zines, maybe enjoying that new Xbox Jennagave him for Christmas ("I'm the Decider, and I decide to spend this afternoon play-ing Call of Duty 4").
This presidency is finally over. We can

say goodbye to an administration whosemisdeeds have piled so high that the sizeof the mountain no longer shocks us. Inour lifetimes, we will see administrationsof varying degrees of competence andintegrity, some we'll agree with and somewe won't. But we will probably never seeanother quite like the one now finally reach-ing its end, so malice, dishonesty, andimmorality. So at last - at long, long last -we can say goodbye.
And good riddance.
