This book is about the life of Holly, a young woman whose husband died from cancer.

Before her husband, Gerry’s death, he left 12 letters to Holly trying to help her

recover from the sadness of losing a husband. After his death, Holly has to open 1

envelop every month and follow the instructions inside. She is asked to go shopping,

karaoke, on a holiday, party with friends etc. With the help and support of her family

and friends, she finally recovered and continued her life without Gerry happily.

Ciara is a character that interests me. She is Holly’s sister. She has pink hair and

likes doing extreme sports. She is brave, confident and not afraid of chasing her

dreams. Her character is the opposite of Holly’s at that time, who was sad, timid and

afraid of challenges. In the story, she helped Holly get over the sadness and continue

her life. She reminds us to be happy all the time and be optimistic towards

everything. Although we face difficulties all the time, we can surely solve the

problems with a positive attitude and the help of friends and family.

Another character the interest me most is Richard, Holly’s elder brother. At the

beginning of the story, he has a perfect family with 2 kids and a well-paid job. He isn’t

talkative nor is he a serious person. He has a wife who is equally boring and serious.

At first, it seems Richard doesn’t care about his siblings at all, he judges them by their

job, how much they earn and how successful their life is. However, an incident

happened on him-he loses his job and this change his life. His wife and kids leaves

him and he remains unemployed. At that time, he knows Holly has lost her husband

and he seems to understand the sadness of losing something important. Therefore,

he used his talent and his only interest-gardening-and helps Holly decorate her

garden. And Holly finally knows that Richard is sweet, caring and understanding but

he keeps his feelings to himself all the time. He reminds us that we shouldn’t judge

the others by how they behave, we should get to know them deeply before judging.

The lesson that I have learnt from the book is that sometimes we should get over

the sadness of losing something or someone important to us. Death is something

that we have no control of, no matter what we do, they won’t come back to life. But

what we can control is our life, we can live happily instead of living in sorrow. This

book has taught me the attitude of treating the death of a family member or a

friend.

Another lesson that I have learnt is that we should treat the friends we already

have nicely. Holly’s friends help her a lot to deal with the death of her husband and

accompanied her on her tough days. This has also taught me how much we earn

depends on how much we give. If we care about our family and friends a little bit

more, they will surely help us when we are in need.

Scene 1

(On a typical morning in Italy, with the sun shining brightly up in the sky, there is a man

walking along the river Adige. We see him wearing a brown cap and a checkered cloak,

murmuring while pacing alone.

Romeo, one of the most famous detectives in Italy, has been investigated into many huge

cases and solved them. This day, he has just received a new case and is trying to tackle

it.)

Romeo: The case I have just received is far more complicated that I thought so. Who

should I examine first? The lady herself or the elderly who seems so strange?

Well, let’s see…

Narrator: When Romeo is walking absent-mindedly, he bumped into a young lady and…

Romeo and the lady: Ouch!

Romeo: (stand up hurriedly)

I’m sorry, miss. I… I didn’t notice you when I was walking and that’s my fault.

Lady: (smile)

That’s okay. I’m fine.

Romeo: That’s nice to hear you not hurt.

Lady: Don’t worry about me.

By the way, I am in a hurry and so I have to go now.

Romeo: I get it. Bye-bye.

Lady: (rushing away and yelling at Romeo)

Bye-bye. It’s so nice to meet you.

Romeo: (eyes are shining with delight)

She looks gorgeous and so… so beautiful.

(look at the ground)

Oops, she has left her handkerchief behind. Let me give back to her when we

meet next time.

(smile and walk away)

Romeo: Good morning, is there anything I can help you?

Man: Yes, thank you very much. I am the manager of the jewellery store

“Emilia-Romagna”. The reason why I am here today is that I would like you to

help my company to safeguard our most valuable jewellery – The Cat’s Eye.

Actually, our company has received a warning from “the Twins” saying that they

would come tonight and steal it. We initially think that this is just a mischief, yet,

we afraid that it would become true and so we are asking for your help.

Romeo: Oh I see. “The Twins” is good at stealing valuable things, especially watches and

jewellary, right? Let me see, one of them is called Paris and the other one is

called Juliet… Okay, I will take care of this case and I will try all my best to

prevent The Cat’s Eye from being stolen.

Man: Thank you for your help, I do hope the nightmare wouldn’t come true.

Scene 3

(That night, Romeo is in the jewellary store waiting for “The Twins”. He has ordered the

security guard to pay extra attention on that night’s security, also, he has asked his friend

Benvolio, who is a policeman, to help him to catch “The Twins”.)

(Juliet and Paris wear black clothes)

Benvolio: (whispering)

Hey, my friend, are you sure “The Twins” would come out today or it is only a

hoax?

Romeo: I have looked into the letter that sent to the store and I am sure that they will

come today..

Benvolio: Really? But I… Wait! Somebody is coming!

(Two people sneak into the store)

Paris: Here we are. It’s easy to get into here, isn’t they don’t take our warning in serious?

Juliet: Hay, focus on what we have to do! Let’s find where they hide The Cat’s Eye in.

Paris: Okay…There it is!

Juliet: Wao, fantastic!

(When Juliet is trying to take The Cat’s Eye out, the security system is alerted and all the

exits are closed.)

Juliet: Oh! What should we do now!

Benvolio: Haha, you two can’t escape anymore, surrender now or you will be shot by me!

Paris: You… If you be can shot me, just do it!

(run away)

(Benvolio chase after him)

Romeo: (face Juliet now)

Romeo: (Open his eyes and mouth wide)

You…you are Juliet?

Juliet: Oh! I…I don’t expect to meet you again like this. Life is really satire…

Romeo: Why… Why are you Juliet? I suppose I have to catch you but…I can’t…

Juliet: Well, I don’t mind to be caught if I am failed.

(Lean her two hands out)

Romeo: No...No! Let’s escape together!

Juliet: But you can’t do that!

Romeo: Actually, I fell in love with you already when we first met, so I wouldn’t leave

you alone.

(catch Juliet’s hand)

Let’s escape now!

(running out)

Benvolio: (shocked)

Romeo, what are you doing now? Are you crazy?

Romeo: Sorry, my friend. But I just can’t leave her alone and be arrested!

(Run out of the store)

Scene 5

(Romeo and Juliet run to a garden.)

(Setting: A tree is needed)

(Spotlight on Romeo and Juliet)

Romeo: Juliet, here is the handkerchief that you have left last time. I keep it because I

believe we will meet someday again but… I didn’t expect to be like this.

Juliet: (smile sweetly)

Me either. Actually, I have fallen in love with you when I first saw you, but I

didn’t know that you…you love me too.

Romeo: Yes, I love you. However…the truth is that you are a thief and I am a detective…

(stop for a while)

Emm…Alright, I have decided to stay with you forever.

(Get down on one knee and look at Juliet affectionately)

Juliet, I fell in love with you the day I saw you. You complete me in every way.

I love you and want to share every moment of my life with you, I will take care

of you and I will never make you cry. I promise I will never leave you alone and

stay with you for life. Will you marry me?

Juliet: (with tears in her eyes)

(Excitedly)

Are…are you serious? You really want to marry me? Oh! Romeo, I do! I do! I do!

(Hug Romeo tightly)

(Romeo and Juliet knee down)

Romeo: In front of the God of moon, please be witnessed that we both love each other

and willing to marry each other.

(look at Juliet)

I promise that I will take care her with my entire life and will stay with her

Juliet: I promise that I will follow him forever no matter how difficult it is.

Juliet: And you will be my husband.

(Smile at each other)

Scene 6

Benvolio: Romeo! Romeo! Where are you?

Romeo: (whispering into Juliet’s ear)

You hide behind the tree over there. Fast!

( Juliet run and hide behind a tree)

Benvolio: Thanks God, I can finally find you. What happen to you? Why you run away

with… with Juliet, right?

Romeo: Listen, Benvolio. I love her and I will stay with her forever. I know that sounds

crazy to you, but please don’t stop me from doing that.

Benvolio: What? You are going to stay with Juliet, the thief? Oh my goodness, do you

know what are you doing now?

Romeo: Yes, I know. I know that I will have to give up all my things if I stay with her,

but I am willing to do so.

Benvolio: (sighed heavily)

Well, if that is your decision, I will respect it. But I warn you, I can never be a

catch you with my bare hands.

Romeo: Well, goodbye.

(Benvolio stare at Romeo for a while, and then walk away silently)

Romeo: Juliet, come out now.

Juliet: (come out)

Is everything alright?

Romeo: Don’t worry about that. Let see, where do you want to go now? Paris? Greece?

Or Hong Kong?

Title: The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants

Author: Ann Brashares

Publisher: Alloy Entertainment

Summary: The story begins with a pair of jeans, which can unbelievably fit all different builds

of four good friends – Lena, Tibby, Bridget and Carmen. From that on, these four girls

decided that they would do something amazing and memorable with this

stand-for-their-friendship’s jeans. Accompanied by the jeans, all of them have a very fantastic

story with a quite happy ending.

Comment: This novel is suitable for the teenagers, especially the girls to read as it includes the

lives of four girls, which could then easily get their resonance. After reading this book, I would

rate Bridget as my favorite character among the four main characters because she is energetic

and she would do whatever she wants. In our daily life, it is nearly impossible for us to do

whatever we wants as there are too many limitations in our lives, thus, I think Bridget is very

brave and I hope I could someday act like her. As for the most impressive plot in this book, I

would choose the one when Carmen, whose parents are divorced, visit her dad happily during

the summer time but then figure out that her dad is going to marry another woman. Feel like

being crowded out by her step-mother and her children, Carman was very upset and

disappointed. Actually, Carman wants her father to find his ‘True Love’ again but she doesn’t

want to be disregarded by her dad at the same time. The book describes her feeling so detail

that it has impressed me a lot.

What is more, I have learnt two lessons from this book. Firstly, from the four main characters,

I have learnt that we have to treasure our friendship, especially the one we developed when we

are young. It is because that kind of friendship is usually very pure and clean, with no other

factors to be involved, but when we grow up, the friendship we developed is usually far more

complicated. Thus, we really have to treasure the friends we have now. Moreover, I have

learnt that we have to chase after every chance that we get. It is because they are rare and if

we don’t make good use of every time, we may be regard. Besides, we always have to get

well-prepared so that we can perform better when we get the chances!

To conclude with, this book is appealing and is suitable for all the teens. Therefore, I highly

recommend this book to all of my friends and my classmates.

Title:The Magician's Elephant

Author:Kate Dicamillo

Publisher:Walker Book Ltd

Summary:

Peter was a young boy raised by an old solider Vilna Lutz

since the death of his parents. He was told time after time

that his sister had died soon after her birth but Peter was not

entirly convinced. One day,Peter was told by a fortune teller

that his sister Adele, was still alive and an elephant would

lead him to her.Thinking it was impossible for an elephant

to come to such a cold town,a magician conjured an

elephant during his performance. The arrival of elephant

here startrd Peter's journey of looking for his sister.

Comment:

Unlike many of the books I have read, 'The Magician's

Elephant' had a neither suspenseful nor exciting plot. Instead,

the author wrote a story of grace and poetry which touched

me a lot.

As far as I can see, the focus of the book is not the story

plot, which is rather simple, but the atmosphere and the

message behind. The setting is a small town and the story

takes place in a chilly winter.Through the detailed portrayal

of the winter scene, like the frozen tree, the lonely street

and houses covered with snow, the writer sucessfuly

created that particular melancholy atmosphere of winter.

Even though I read this book in summer holiday,I had no

difficulty feeling the coolness protrayed.

The melancholy atmosphere seemed to reflect the

loneliness, and sorrow buried in characters' hearts, like

Peter, who was sad for the seperation with his sister for so

Page 10: , Gerry’ 11-12/11-12S4.pdf · 2014-03-04 · Auther: Cecilia Ahern Publisher: Harper This book is about the life of Holly, a young woman whose husband died from cancer. Before her

many years and was still unable to see her, or the magician,

who performed the most incrdible magic ever, but was

charged as a result of the accident created. Almost each

character had a broken heart, for different reasons. At the

end, after the elephant was sent to where it shall be, Peter

met her sister again, the magician was forgiven and

released, they all celebrated on the street. Despite the heavy

snow, the atmosphere was no longer cold ,but cheerful.

Such warm atmosphere made a big contrast with the snow

and this is my favourite scene of all.

A message sent through the book is that 'The truth is

always changing.'This was what the fortune teller said to

Peter when he insisted that it was imposible to find an

elephant in the town.Indeed, the truth is really always

changing.Later,a magician did conjured an elephant .For

the truth is always changing, we should always keep hope

alive. If Peter simply had let the words of the old soliders

destroyed his hope of meeting his sister, he neither would

have asked the fortune teller about his sister, let alone met

her. 'Every cloud has a silver lining.'Who know what may

happen in the future? If we just look at how things may

seem at the moment, and give up easily, we are made to

miss some valuable opportunities.

All in all, The Magician's Elephant is an enlightning,

thought-provoking and moving book that will touch

everyone's heart.

Title: Bulging Brain Experiment

Author: Nick Arnold

Publisher: Scholastic

Summary:

Bulging Brain Experiment is one of the books of the Horrible Science Handbook

series. Through different interesting experiments, the author is going to tell the

readers all information about brains, from its appearance to the structure, from its

use and how it actually works. The comical illustration and amusing writing style

make it is enjoyable to read the book. Every time we read a book, it is a journey to

explore the mystery of our brains.

Comment:

The Horrible Science Handbook series are definitely my favorite non-fiction. I

never know books related to Science and Biology can be that entertaining and funny.

It breaks the boring and dull impression I have on that type of books.

Those facts about brain are quite interesting. Our brain has a sophisticated

structure and is divided into several parts which control different senses of human.

Brain is necessary for us to see, smell, hear, taste, feel and survive. The author

introduced the full process of how we can see and it is mind-boggling to know that

the process is really complicated. It involves many parts of our bodies and they have

to co-operate with each other. Amazingly, our body can just complete such a

complicated process in a very short time so we can see things clearly in every single

second!

Moreover, I find some information about brain diseases which are useful for me.

Headache and unconsciousness are some common symptoms people have when they

have diseases. In the book, it gives detailed explanation of the causes of headaches

and unconsciousness so that I can prevent them from happening. I should take more

care of the brain as it plays an extremely vital role in our life.

Page 12: , Gerry’ 11-12/11-12S4.pdf · 2014-03-04 · Auther: Cecilia Ahern Publisher: Harper This book is about the life of Holly, a young woman whose husband died from cancer. Before her

Except those scientific facts that interest me, I feel more grateful to our God after

reading the book as it is Him who created humans and gave us such a beautiful and

magical body. In our body with limited space, all necessary organs and systems

which allow us to live a wonderful life are provided by our God. Shouldn’t we be

thankful of having the best body in the world? Therefore, I think we should cherish

and love ourselves more as it is the greatest present from God. We should take care

of it and maintain a healthy lifestyle that is beneficial to our body.

Last but not least, I learn that psychiatrists have been studying about brains for

a long time. However, a normal person will only develop and use about 3% of his

brain the whole life so there are still many mysteries about it. It is believed that if we

use our brain more, more unknown parts of our brain can be developed. Therefore,

I need to think more and cannot be too lazy in thinking. Use my brain more or I will

become very smart one day!

Title: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Author: Lewis Carroll

Summary

This creative story is filled with miracles and personification. In the story,

Alice found a small bottle labeled ‘Drink me’ which caused her to shrink. She

drank it and everything was different: she was smaller in size. She met the many

unfamiliar faces and tried those things new to her. Because of this, she had a

wonderful adventure. This is an educational and amusing story that appeals to

both adults and children.

Comments

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is an interesting book. All the scenes

seem to be impossible in reality. For instance, the caterpillar could speak. The

blue caterpillar sat quietly and smoked a hookah. It is so impressive that it is the

most distinct animal I have ever seen. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a

story filled with miracles that everyone with live to read about. This creative

story attracts me a lot. On the other hand, the white rabbit is my favorite

character. He is always in a hurry in the story. He took a watch and looked at it

all the time. However, the rabbit’s rhythm is just like Hong Kong people. Hong

Kong people are living in a hustle and bustle city, their rhythm is so rapid. Same

for us, I would look before we leap so we can do a better job. What we need is

less hustle and lower the speed in life. Whenever we go, we should not forget the

principle.

Furthermore, I have learnt some things after I read this book. Trust and

respect are indispensable between people. After Alice heard what the blue

caterpillar said, she tried to trust the caterpillar, which said that if Alice wanted

we are being confused by perplexity. Unfamiliar people will probably give us

some advice. We ought to trust them. If we always communicate with people

disbelievingly, we will have no friends consequently.. I would also respect and

trust my friends. As far as friendship is concerned, it is very precious. No matter

what we do, our friends will support us.

Fiends treat us wholeheartedly as friend is a second self.
