Giving back to your parents with a Charitable Gift Annuity Are you looking for the perfect gift for your aging parents that would guarantee income for life? Consider opening up a charita-ble gift annuity with the Archdiocese of Newark. A charitable gift annuity can provide payments with direct deposit to your aging parents now and a gift to their parish later, all while providing you with both piece of mind and an income tax de-duction. If you would like information on this unique gift, please contact Theresa Lynch, Planned Giving Manager, Arch-diocese of Newark (973) 497-4042 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Wisdom of the Saints Obedience is a virtue of so excellent a nature, that Our Lord was pleased to mark its observance upon the whole course of His life; thus He often says, “I did not come to do my own will, but that of my heavenly Father.” —St. Francis de Sales To do the will of God, man must despise his own: the more he dies to himself, the more he will live in God.

—St. Peter Claver I am quite resigned to live or die, I am even willing to recover and go to Cochin-China if it is God’s will.

—St. Therese of Lisieux A little drop of simple obedience is worth a million times more than a whole vase of choicest contemplation.

—St. Mary Magdalen de’Pazzi

Sanctity of Life "Dear friends, it is certainly necessary to give bread to the hungry – this is an act of justice. But there is also a deeper hunger, the hunger for a happiness that only God can sat-isfy, the hunger for dignity. There is neither real promo-tion of the common good nor real human development when there is ignorance of the fundamental pillars that govern a nation, its non-material goods: life, which is a gift of God, a value always to be protected and promoted; the family, the foundation of coexistence and a remedy against social fragmentation; integral education, which cannot be reduced to the mere transmission of information for pur-poses of generating profit; health, which must seek the integral well-being of the person, including the spiritual dimension, essential for human balance and healthy coex-istence; security, in the conviction that violence can be overcome only by changing human hearts."

F or whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it (Luke 9:24).

Don't we want to save our life? Isn't it all about living longer, healthier lives? Isn't it all about having a career, getting the best in life, achieving greatness, seeing the world, going to Disney World? We only live once, right? Wrong! We live twice and the second life is in union with God and is eternal. How we live this life, how we treat others, how we love our enemy, how we forgive and repent of our sins is in great measure the basis of our eternal disposition. So when Christ says, whoever wishes to save his life (in this worldliness) will lose it (i.e. eternal life), but whoever loses his life (giving up the self-centeredness and temporality) for Jesus' sake will save it (i.e. life for eternity). Christ calls us to live for the other, both other people (love you neighbor as yourself) and the Other (love God with all your being). Now this is not so easy. Our instinct is to survive and in surviving we want the best: best food, best shelter, success, and the like. In our opulent society this can be had and it is what is expected. However the "good" things in life are sacrificed to the idols we have made of worldly desires. Family, friendship, faith, and even everyday fun (the 4 Fs) have suffered or died all for the sake of Success, Power, Wealth, Pleasure, etc. In our struggle to give to our chil-dren everything we did not have, we have forgotten to give them the one thing we truly had, our Faith. In saving our lives (obtaining all that the world has to offer) we lost our lives (losing faith and family). What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life (Mark 8:36)? So if we desire what is good and holy in this life and in the life to come, we must deny ourselves

and take up our cross daily and follow Jesus. If we remain our whole life never knowing how to love, sacrifice, and give our-selves to the other, we will remain dust from which we came. Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

Faith Journey for the next generation…..Pass it on! We need you; Christ needs you.

By becoming a catechist of our young disciples and nurturing their faith, you will grow in your own faith. One catechist said, “I entered the classroom unsure of how I’d be received. But as I taught them about Jesus and his love for us, they began to hear the Word, open their hearts, and grow in their faith. It was not me but Jesus whom they encountered.” If interested or for more information contact: Mr. Julian Garcia, Coordinator for Religious Education at

(201) 343-5170 We have 400+ disciples to catechize. Your gift of faith is need-ed. CCD classes are offered Sunday mornings and Thursday evenings providing you with the time that fits your schedule.

Beginning January 1, 2017

Because of one less priest in the parish and a lesser number of people attending particular Masses, I find it prudent to elimi-nate the 6:30 PM Spanish Mass on Saturday Evenings. The 6:30 PM Mass on Sunday evenings will remain year long. On Sunday, the 10:00 and 11:15 Masses will be combined to a 10:30 AM Mass. I had notified you of this earlier in the year, but had to move the change up to January 1. I am sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause. The Mass book is for 2017 will open June 15. Please feel free to have a Mass said for you dearly departed. I kindly ask that you do not attempt to take every available Sunday or Saturday Mass for your intentions. It is nice to share with others. We have plenty of weekday Masses available. Beginning January 1, 2017 Sunday: English: 7:00 AM, 10:30 AM, & 12:30 PM Spanish: 8:30 AM & 6:30 PM Saturday Eve: English: 5:00 PM
