Hello,
Following the reading of an article published on the internet regarding the
withdrawal of plastic straws from your hotel (Palace) I would like to congratulate
you for this great initiative.
This will have, without any doubt, a high positive impact via the image of the
Principality, the luxury property that supports it and of course the proximity with
our Mediterranean sea.
I don’t have the privilege to be one of your clients, but as a diver, father, and
being sensitive to the environment causes I would like to thank you for this
positive action.
Best regards

In order to maintain the high quality
standards of the beverages served to our
customers, some cocktails and smoothies will
use PLA straws – a fully biodegradable
material.
To emphasize our commitment in terms of
waste management, the hotel now serves
one biodegradable straw per cocktail instead
of two.

A few figures… to understand why ?
• One billion straws are used and thrown away everyday all over the world…
• … including 500 million only in the United States… (The population in the USA being
325,7 million inhabitants).
• 8,8 million straws are thrown away everyday in France (and this is only in the fast food
industry!).
• At the Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo, it represented 400 straws per day!
• Straws are single-used and have an average lifetime of 20 minutes.
But why such a decision?? INTRODUCTION

The consequences of using straws in a few figures:
• Every year, 1,5 million of marine animals die because of the plastic they have injected
(straws included) and 8 million tons of plastic are offloaded in the oceans.
• Straws are in the top 5 of the waste collected on the beaches.

The plastic straws are made out of oil,
so they are scarcely biodegradable,
with a lifetime of several hundred
years.
They seriously pollute the oceans.
A straw is very small and light and
because of the wind or the rain, we
often find them in the rivers or on the
coasts.
The plastic, which stockpile in their
stomach is absolutely not edible.
And because the human being eat
fish, the plastic ends up in our own
stomachs.
The small size and the shape of
the straws are a real trap for
millions of mammals, fishes and
birds who can easily confuse them
with food.
Why straws are a danger for the planet, the animals and the oceans?
