RE: After-the-Fact UST Closure Assessment, Former Desautels Trucking, Enosburg Falls, Vermont. Facility ID# 2497

Dear Ms. Thayer:

This letter contains a summary of the after-the-fact underground storage tank (UST) closure assessment conducted at the above referenced site. This investigation was conducted to assess soil quality in the vicinity of a former 10,000-gallon diesel UST which did not have a site assessment conducted at the time of its removal. This work was completed by Griffin International, Inc:~(Griffin) for Luc Desautels.

The UST was estimated to be at least 17 years old. The UST had a capacity of 10,000 gallons, and was used to store diesel fuel for use in the company's vehicles. The UST was of single-wall steel construction and was not replaced. The UST was reportedly removed.from the subsurface during the summer of 1992, .A site--assessment was not conducted at the time of the UST removal.

The after-the-fact UST closure inspection was conducted on July 24, 2000. Excavation was performed by Mr. Desautels.

Excavation was performed in the vicinity of the former UST. Mr. Desautels identified the area as being the location of the former UST. Excavation was extended to a depth of approximately 12 feet below grade. Soil samples were collected from the excavation for field screening. Soil samples were screened for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using a properly calibrated Hnu Model HW-101 photoionization device (PID) equipped with a minimum 10.2 eV bulb.

Soils from grade to an approximate depth of 12 feet were comprised of coarse gravel. Soils in this area were observed to be stained gray and contained an odor resembling

diesel fuel; a PID response ranging from 50 to 120 parts per million (ppm) was observed in these soils. Groundwater was observed to enter the excavation from the north side at an approximate depth of 5 feet below grade. Field screening results are presented in Table 1.

Sample Number

PID Reading (ppm) Location

1 70 2 feet below grade 2 120 4 feet below grade 3 50 8 feet below grade 4 92 10 feet below grade 5 102 12 feet below grade 6 50 12 feet below grade 7 50 12 feet below grade 8 100 12 feet below grade Note: Soils screened with HNu Model HW-I0l PID

All of the soils excavated from the UST area were returned to the excavation.

A visual survey of the area surrounding the site was conducted at the time of the assessment. The site is located in an area that is mixed commercial and residential properties. The area is served by a private supply well; according to Mr. Desautels, the well is completed in bedrock to a depth of 465 feet below grade. The supply well is located approximately 300 feet to the northeast of the UST area. A shallow dug spring is located approximately 75 feet to the southwest of the source area; the spring is constructed of clay tile. On July 24, 2000, the water in the spring was observed to be approximately 20 feet below grade. The spring is used to supply water to the site garage; this water is reportedly not used for drinking. There were no surface water bodies observed in the direct vicinity of the site.

The adjacent garage building is constructed on a slab foundation; therefore, there is likely little risk of petroleum vapor migration impact to the garage building. The nearby residence is constructed on a basement foundation; the residence is located in what is perceived to be an upgradient location and is therefore likely at little risk of petroleum vapor migration impact. No complaints of petroleum odors are known to have been reported in the immediate vicinity of the site.

Other than soil and groundwater, there are no known receptors currently impacted by the residual petroleum contamination at this site. Please call with any questions regarding this site.
