PREFACE
Dear Colleagues On behalf of the organising committee, I am delighted to welcome you to the 15th International Conference on “Advances in Materials and Processing Technologies (AMPT 2012)” in Wollongong Australia. The Advances in Materials and Processing Technologies (AMPT) conference series was founded in 1993 at the Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland. Since then the AMPT conferences were held in Ireland (1995, 1999 and 2003), Portugal (1997), Malaysia (1998), Spain (2001), Poland (2004), USA (2006), Korea (2007), Bahrain (2008), Malaysia (2009), Paris (2010) and Turkey (2011).
This year, the conference program covers over 450 papers in 72 technical sessions and 100 poster presentations. There will be 7 Keynote Speakers and 74 Invited Lectures at the conference. The conference sessions will cover a broad range of topics such as materials, deformation processing, materials removal processes, processing of new and advanced materials, welding and joining, surface engineering and other related processes. The conference promises to be a highlight in the Materials & Processing Technologies calendar.
I would like to express my gratitude to the University of Wollongong for its strong support and encouragement, and to my friends and colleagues for their ongoing help in making this conference a success. I am deeply indebted to all the members of the local Organising Committee, the International Scientific Committee and the International Steering Committee who have provided sound advice and guidance in planning this conference. My sincere thanks and appreciation goes to the 255 international reviewers for their prompt feedback on the submitted papers for journal publications. Getting Around Wollongong
Wollongong's FREE Gong Shuttle bus (Route 55A/55C) makes it easy to get around Wollongong's City Centre,
Wollongong Central Railway Station, Novotel Wollongong NorthBeach hotel, Boat Harbour Motel, Medina, Main
Campus University of Wollongong, Innovation Campus University of Wollongong, and beaches. The first Gong Shuttle
leaves Wollongong University in both directions from 7:00am Monday to Friday and 8:00am on weekends. Last service
leaves Wollongong University in both directions from 9:40pm Monday to Friday and 5:50pm on weekends. More

Morning and afternoon teas and lunches are included in conference registration. Morning and afternoon teas will be
served in Banquet Lobby, Novotel; Buffet lunches will be served in Windjammers Restaurant, Novotel.
Instructions for chairs
For invited presentations, timeslots are 30 minutes, including 25 minutes of presentation and 5 minutes of
question/discussion. For standard presentations, timeslots are 20 minutes, including 15 minutes of presentation with
5 minutes of question/discussion. Please stick to the program as provided even if a speaker does not turn up to
facilitate movement between sessions.
Instructions for oral presenters
For invited presentations, timeslots are 30 minutes, including 25 minutes of presentation and 5 minutes of
question/discussion. For standard presentations, timeslots are 20 minutes, including 15 minutes of presentation with
5 minutes of question/discussion. If using PowerPoint, please bring your file on a USB stick to the room of your
presentation during the break before your session, or 20 minutes before the start of the day’s proceedings. A
volunteer will help you load it.
Instructions for poster presenters
Posters will be displayed on a double‐sided freestanding board. The boards are 1.8m tall and 1.2m wide, thereby
accommodating posters up to ISO A0 size (1189mm x 841mm) in portrait format comfortably; one poster on each side.
Posters will be set up on Monday 24th September and Tuesday 25th September during the arrival tea/coffee time in
Banquet Lobby, Novotel; and remain in place for the day of the conference. Poster presenters need to stand beside
their posters for question/discussion during coffee breaks (10:30‐11:00 am and 15:30‐16:00 pm).

ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING IS ON ITS WAY TO INDUSTRIALISATION: TECHNOLOGY WITH HIGH DEGREE OF
INTERACTION BETWEEN SYSTEM MATERIAL AND APPLICATION
All started with the invention of Stereolithography by Chars Hull in 1984. A novel material processing technology
family was born. Based on a variety of physical principles an assortment of RP system was created. A handful of
implemented systems made the way to the industry. The earlier named Rapid Prototyping (RP) was later called
Additive Manufacturing (AM) and today informally referred as 3D Printing. Since several years the use Rapid‐
Prototyping is considered state of the art in the product, develop cycle. The community is motivated for Additive
Manufacturing. The first recent ASTM standard F 2792 defines it as: “Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a process of
joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive
manufacturing methodologies”. The AM systems open up never seen before potentials. “Complexity for Free” a near
to unlimited geometrical freedom in plastics, metals and ceramics became possible. Moreover, the biomedical
manufacturing with relevant Biomaterials and acellular tissue matrices is on the way. AM is application driven. In
comparison to the SM or traditional manufacturing AM are a family of technologies with high degree of interaction
between System and Material. The presentation will describe the state of the art of the Additive Manufacturing on the
way to industrialisation. Challenges and bottlenecks as well as success stories are used in praxis. A particular emphasis
will be on the link to material science and options as Gradual Materials, Digital Materials etc. and resulting challenges
and opportunities.

CRYOGENIC PROCESSING OF MATERIALS FOR ENHANCED PRODUCT LIFE, PERFORMANCE AND SUSTAINABILITY
In recent years, the use of basic principles of sustainability science and engineering in new product development has
been an emerging trend in manufacturing. Designing and manufacturing sustainable products and developing
sustainable manufacturing processes have been a major research focus in sustainable manufacturing. This
presentation will highlight recent advances in developing advanced manufacturing techniques involving novel
cryogenic processing (machining, burnishing and friction‐stir processing) on a range of aerospace, automotive and
biomedical alloys (Co‐Cr‐Mo, AZ31B Mg, Ni‐Ti, Inconel 718, AISI 52100 and A7075 alloys) for achieving enhanced
product performance, life and sustainability. This study covers an analysis of surface integrity involving severe plastic
deformation (SPD) induced by cryogenic processes in these materials and the resulting performance enhancement
through controllable ultra‐fine/nano grain structures and the associated wear and corrosion resistance properties and
the generation of compressive residual stresses enabling improved fatigue life, along with more favourable phase
transformation in these processed materials. Experimental results are compared with numerical simulations.
Encouraging trends are observed with potential for applications in industry.

TAKING ADVANCED MATERIALS AND MAKING AN IMPACT
The advent of high throughput materials development has led to a significant increase in the rate that materials are
developed. It was not long ago that a whole PhD project focused on the development of a new material type with its
associated phase diagrams. This would require years of development. With the introduction of high throughput
materials development and characterization, it is possible to achieve a phase diagram in a very much shortened time
frame. The current expectations on the modern materials scientist is to utilise these newly developed materials with
highly desired properties to meet complex challenges and to see their implementation into a device, structure or
product. This talk will review the changes in the way materials are developed using high throughput and combinatorial
methods and materials informatics. I will then provide some case studies on how these new materials are used in new
devices, structures and a range of applications that use their combination of properties to have an impact on an
application or major global challenge.

MULTI‐SCALE MODELLING AND SIMULATION OF DIRECTIONAL SOLIDIFICATION PROCESS OF TURBINE BLADE
CASTING WITH MCA METHOD
Nickel based superalloy turbine blade castings are widely used as a critical part in aero‐engines. However, due to the
complex solidification and manufacturing processes, complicated internal blade structure and interaction among
different elements in the superalloy, casting defects especially stray grain often happen during directional
solidification of turbine blade casting, which causes low production yield and high production cost. In order to
improve the quality of the directionally solidified turbine blade casting, modelling and simulation technique has been
employed to study the microstructure evolution as well as to optimise the casting process.
In the paper, a Modified Cellular Automaton (MCA) method was introduced and used to simulate the directional
solidification of turbine blade casting. MCA method was coupled with macro heat transfer and micro grain growth
kinetics in order to simulate the micro‐structure evolution during the directional solidification. In addition, a ray
tracing method was proposed to calculate the heat transfer especially the heat radiation of multiple blade castings in
a Bridgman furnace. Competitive mechanism was incorporated into the grain growth model to describe grain
selection behaviour phenomena of multiple columnar grains in the grain selector. With the proposed models, the
microstructure evolution and related defects could be simulated, while the processing parameters optimized and the
blade casting quality guaranteed as well.
A number of experiments were carried out to validate the proposed models, and quite good agreement between the
simulated and experimental results was achieved.

WELDING ‐ AN ENABLING TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE THE FUTURE GLOBAL QUALITY OF LIFE
With world population 7 billion in 2011 and predicted to top 9 billion by 2045, the pressures on manufacturing and
maintenance, infrastructure and energy generation, not to mention basic needs such as food, water, shelter and
education, will become enormous common future challenges.
Welding, as an enabling technology, plays a critical role in almost every industry sector, and is vital to the world’s
ability to cope with these pressures and challenges. Welding and related technologies, whether basic or sophisticated,
and the people skilled in their implementation and application, are thus cornerstones to improved quality of life for all.
The future challenges may arise from the demand for nuclear power generation for an emerging nation, the
production of floating liquefied natural gas facilities of enormous magnitude, the need to transport clean water to a
village, or it could be the urgency of infrastructure and community reconstruction after natural disasters such as the
floods, cyclones, fires and earthquakes occurring across the world.
The paper covers the future challenges to 2021 as identified in the International Institute of Welding (IIW) White
Paper “Improving Global Quality of Life through Optimum Use and Innovation of Welding and Joining Technologies”.
Examples of the challenges for major industry sectors for future applications, as well as specific needs and challenges
will be covered. Short, medium, and long term strategic agendas of the world of welding and joining technology have
been identified leading to opportunities in research and development, education and training, qualification and
certification initiatives, and in particular, technology transfer activities.
Recommendations on how individual countries and organisations can utilise the benefits of the IIW White Paper will
be highlighted.

FABRICATION OF BULK NANOSTRUCTURED METALS BY SEVERE PLASTIC DEFORMATION OR BY PROCESSES
WITHOUT SEVERE PLASTIC DEFORMATION
Bulk nanostructured metals or ultrafine grained materials of which mean grain sizes are much smaller than 1 m can
be nowadays fabricated in bulky dimensions. The bulk nanostructured metals have been energetically studied, since
they show superior mechanical properties, such as high strength and good toughness, and also unique phenomena
that never happen in conventional grain‐sized materials. One of the ways to fabricate bulk nanostructure metals is
severe plastic deformation (SPD) process in which huge plastic strain is applied to the materials. There have been
developed various unique SPD processes, and the author is a developer of one of SPD processes, accumulative roll
bonding (ARB). In the present talk, formation process and mechanism of ultrafine grains during SPD, especially in ARB
process, are introduced. The formation of ultrafine grains during SPD is understood in terms of grain subdivision, so
that the obtained ultrafine grained structures are a kind of deformation structure. On the other hand, fabrication of
bulk nanostructured metals without severe plastic deformation is also possible. Some examples through new concepts
of thermomechanical processing in steels and other examples in particular materials are also shown in the lecture.

THE CHARACTERISATION AND BEHAVIOUR OF ADVANCED HIGH STRENGTH STEELS ACROSS LENGTH SCALES
Advanced High Strength Steels are meeting the demands for increased strength without sacrificing ductility or other
properties such as fatigue, fracture and crash behaviour. These steels range from quite simple single phase
microstructures through to very complex microstructures where not only the nature of the phases changes but also
the characteristic lengths within these phases can vary. In our work we consider the behaviour of these steels from
the macroscopic (e.g. tensile properties and formability) through the mesoscale (e.g. the arrangement of phases and
the texture behaviour at a grain by grain level) to the microscale (e.g. classic measures of grain size and packet size) to
the nanoscale (bainite morphology and precipitates) to finally the atomistic (engineered strain hardening and cluster
formation as examples). It is proposed that it is only by the use of appropriate characterisation methods for each of
the phenomena, underpinned by appropriate modelling, can we develop a comprehensive framework for the future
development and optimisation of such steels. The lecture will include recent work using 3D atom probe tomography,
in particular, to unlock the nanoscale and atomistic effects.
