What are they?...
• Exponents show repeated multiplication.
An exponent is a number multiplied by itself the given number of times.
For example:
53 = 5 X 5 X 5, 62 = 6 X 6
and 78 = 7 X 7 X 7 X 7 X 7 X 7 X 7 X 7.
The exponent tells us how many times the base is used as a factor.
THE EXPONENT OF A NUMBER SAYS HOW MANY TIMES TO USE THE NUMBER IN MULTIPLICATION
So an Exponent just saves you writing out lots of multiplies!
How to read a power…
In words: 82 could be called "8 to the second power", "8 to the power 2" or simply "8 squared"
