Введение

На уроках английского языка, при выполнении домашних заданий и

заданий ЕГЭ учащиеся встречаются с фразами и предложениями

(фразеологизмами), дословный перевод которых может поставить ученика в

тупик. В учебниках английского языка общеобразовательной школы

изучению фразеологизмов практически не уделяется внимание. Для

правильного и полного понимания фразеологизмов недостаточно правильно

выполнить перевод. Необходимо дополнительное толкование значения таких

фраз с использованием дополнительных источников информации, в том числе

англо-русских фразеологических словарей и специальных справочников. А

для реального живого общения с носителями английского языка необходимо

хорошее владение фразеологизмами, незнание которых может значительно

затруднить естественный процесс коммуникации.

Фразеологизмы – это языковой материал, который может повысить

интерес учащихся к изучению английского языка, развить их языковую

интуицию, заложить привычку думать лингвистическими понятиями.

Хорошее знание языка, в том числе английского невозможно без знания

фразеологии. Знание фразеологии значительно облегчит чтение литературы

на английском языке, а также сделает процесс общения с носителями языка

более доступным и познавательным. Если найти способы изучения

английских фразеологизмов и рекомендовать их к изучению, то можно

значительно расширить словарный запас, и соответственно, повысить

коммуникативные возможности изучающих иностранный язык в

общеобразовательной школе, успешно подготовиться к олимпиаде и сдаче

ЕГЭ по английскому языку.

Большинство учащихся старших классов не знакомы с английскими

фразеологизмами, не употребляют их в речи и не умеют выявлять значение.

Это проблемное поле помогут заполнить предлагаемые дидактические

материалы для изучения английских фразеологизмов, как на уроках, так и во

внеклассной работе, а также самостоятельно.

Английский язык имеет тысячелетнюю историю. За это время в нём

накопилось большое количество выражений, которые люди нашли удачными,

меткими и красивыми. Так и возник особый слой языка – фразеология.

Фразеологизмы – это языковой материал, который может повысить

интерес учащихся к изучению английского языка, развить их языковую

интуицию, заложить привычку думать лингвистическими понятиями.

Идиомы (фразеологизмы) – это выражения, смысл которых не

равен смыслу составляющих их слов. Если переводить идиомы дословно,

получиться бессмыслица. Например: «You are pulling my leg!» Дословно это

будет переводиться так: «Вы дергаете меня за ногу!», но на самом деле

правильно это будет звучать так: «Вы морочите мне голову!». В русском

языке тоже есть идиомы. Например: «Ты работаешь спустя рукава!».

Иностранец может и не понять, что именно это выражение обозначает.

Следовательно, знание фразеологизмов важно в изучении любого

иностранного языка.

Современный английский язык насчитывает более 25000

фразеологизмов. Без знания фразеологии невозможно оценить яркость и

выразительность речи, понять шутку, игру слов, а иногда просто и смысл

всего высказывания.

В идиомах встречается много архаизмов, то есть старых, теперь

непонятных слов. Без них идиома рассыпается на отдельные слова и уже

сама ничего не значит. Например, в английской идиоме to be at somebody`s

beck and call– русский эквивалент: быть на побегушках, слово beck является

архаизмом и нигде, кроме данного фразеологизма не встречается.

Идиома – это конечный результат развития значения целых

словосочетаний. Она и исчезает сразу, целиком, вся идиома. А не отдельные,

составляющие ее слова.

В разных источниках мы нашли несколько определений

фразеологизмов.

Фразеологи зм — устойчивое по составу и структуре, лексически

неделимое и целостное по значению словосочетание или предложение,

выполняющее функцию отдельной лексемы (словарной единицы).

Фразеологические единицы (идиомы) – целиком переосмысленные

сочетания слов, обладающие номинативно-экспрессивным значением. Часто

фразеологизм остаётся достоянием только одного языка.

Исключением являются так называемые фразеологические кальки.

Все знают русский фразеологизм «когда рак на горе свистнет». В разных

языках можно найти соответствующие эквиваленты этого фразеологизма.

when pigs fly – дословно: когда полетят свиньи– английский язык;

quand les poules auront des dents – дословно: когда у кур будут зубы –

французский язык;

cuando las ranas crien pelos – дословно: когда у лягушек появится

шерсть – испанский язык;

wenn die Hunde mit dem Schwanz bellen – дословно: когда собаки

залают хвостами– немецкий язык.

По происхождению английские фразеологизмы можно разделить на две

группы:

Исконно английские фразеологические единицы

Заимствованные фразеологические единицы.

I. Исконно английские фразеологизмы связаны с традициями, обычаями и

поверьями английского народа, а также с реалиями, преданиями,

историческими фактами.

1. Идиомы, отражающие традиции и обычаи английского народа:

Baker’s dozen- чертова дюжина (по старинному английскому обычаю,

торговцы хлебом получали от булочников 13 хлебов вместо 12, причем

тринадцатый шел в счет дохода торговцев).

2. Идиомы, связанные с английской историей и реалиями:

Carry coals to Newcastle - возить уголь в Ньюкасл (т.е. возить что-либо туда,

где этого и так достаточно; Ньюкасл - центр английской угольной

промышленности); Русский эквивалент: Ехать в Тулу со своим самоваром;

Send somebody to Coventry – бойкотировать кого-то, отказать в общении (в

средние века в городе Ковентри находилась тюрьма).

3. Идиомы, связанные с именами английских писателей, ученых,

королей и др.

A good Jack makes a good Gill - если Джек хорош, то и Джилл хороша;

Русский эквивалент: У хорошего мужа и жена хороша;

4.Идиомы, связанные с поверьями:

A black sheep - паршивая овца, позор в семье (по старому поверью, черная

овца отмечена печатью дьявола); Русский эквивалент: В семье не без урода;

5.Источником многих английских фразеологизмов является

английская художественная литература. Произведения знаменитого

английского классика У. Шекспира являются наиболее важными по числу

фразеологизмов, обогативших английский язык. Число их свыше ста.

A fool’s paradise («Ромео и Джульетта») – призрачное счастье, мир

фантазий;

To be or not to be? («Гамлет») - быть или не быть?

Cakes and ale («Двенадцатая ночь») – пироги и пиво, т. е. беззаботное

веселье, наслаждение жизнью.

Кроме Шекспира, многие другие писатели обогатили английский

фразеологический фонд. Среди них главным образом следует отметить

Александра Попа, Вальтера Скотта, Джеффри Чосера, Джона Мильтона,

Джонатана Свифта и Чарльза Диккенса.

Never say die – (Чарльз Диккенс «Давид Копперфильд») – не падай духом;

A bag of bones – (Чарльз Диккенс «Оливер Твист) - кожа да кости;

Vanity Fair – (У. Теккерей «Ярмарка тщеславия») - ярмарка тщеславия.

Есть ещё один интересный способ возникновения идиом. В английском

языке есть такое выражение As mad as a hatter, которое стало известно

благодаря литературе. Оно обозначает «безумен как торговец шляп». Вы

спросите, почему торговец шляп безумен? Это все легко объясняется.

"Совершенно чокнутыми" становились как производители, так и продавцы

шляп не случайно. Долгое время в процессе производства шляп

использовались ртуть, металл, являющиеся ядовитыми. И уже затем только

Льюис Кэрролл в своей книге "Алиса в стране чудес" показал безумие

шляпника в деле.

6. Фразеологизмы библейского происхождения встречаются очень

часто:

Loaves and fishes означает земные блага. Loaves - хлебы и fishes - рыбы

употребляются в евангельском предании о том, как Христос накормил пятью

хлебами и двумя рыбами сотни людей, собравшихся слушать его;

the apple of Sodom означает красивый, но гнилой плод, обманчивый успех.

forbidden fruit – запретный плод;

Juda’skiss – поцелуй Иуды;

7. Большое число английских фразеологизмов связанно с античной

мифологией, историей и литературой. Многие из них носят

интернациональный характер, так как встречаются в ряде языков.

Achiles’ heel- ахиллесова пята;

the apple of discord- яблоко раздора;

the golden age – золотой век;

Pandora’s box – ящик Пандоры.

8. Фразеологизмы в английском языке в своем большинстве

являются исконно английскими оборотами, авторы которых неизвестны.

Примерами подобных широко распространенных оборотов, созданных

народом являются:

Have a bee in one’s bonnet - носиться с какой-либо идеей, быть помешанным

на чем-либо;

In for a penny, in for a pound- рискнул на пенни, рискуй и на фунт; Русский

эквивалент: Взялся за гуж, не говори, что не дюж. Назвался груздем –

полезай в кузов!

II. Ко второй группе относятся фразеологические единицы,

заимствованные из различных языков.

1. Фразеологические заимствования из немецкого языка

немногочисленны:

Blood and iron- железо и кровь, беспощадное применение силы - принцип

политики Бисмарка, стремившегося объединить Германию силой прусского

оружия;

Speech is silver, silence is golden - слова - серебро, молчание - золото,

пословица впервые встречается у Томаса Карлейла.

2. В английском языке имеется всего несколько фразеологизмов,

заимствованных из испанского языка:

blue blood - голубая кровь, аристократическое происхождение;

the fifth column - пятая колонна, тайные пособники врага. Выражение

возникло во время гражданской войны в Испании, когда фашистский генерал

Мола, осаждавший Мадрид четырьмя колоннами, заявил в переданном по

радио осенью 1963 года обращении к населению Мадрида, что в городе у

него имеется пятая колонна;

3. Часть идиом была заимствована и из русского языка:

The Sick Man of Europe - «больной человек Европы», так называл царь

Николай I Турцию в 1853 году; в настоящее время любая европейская страны,

находящаяся в тяжелом экономическом положении.

4. Из датского языка:

An ugly duckling - «гадкий утенок», человек несправедливо оцененный ниже

своих достоинств, проявляющихся неожиданно для окружающих; по сказке

Г. Х. Андерсена о гадком утенке, который вырос и стал прекрасным лебедем.

5. Из китайского языка:

To lose face - потерять престиж, быть униженным, обесчещенным. Русский

эквивалент: потерять лицо.

6. Фразеологизмы, восходящие к арабской литературе:

Из сказок «Тысячи и одной ночи» в английский язык пришло несколько

выражений:

Aladdin’s lamp - волшебная лампа Аладдина- талисман, выполняющий все

желания своего владельца;

rub the lamp - легко осуществить свое желание;

an open sesame - «сезам, откройся!», быстрый и легкий способ достижения

чего-либо - магические слова, с помощью которых открывалась дверь в

пещеру разбойников в сказке «Али-Баба и сорок разбойников».

Способы происхождения английских идиом разнообразны и в каждом

отдельном случае индивидуальны. В дидактических материалах

предлагаются интересные исследовательские упражнения на анализ и

распределение фразеологизмов по источникам их происхождения. Изучая

происхождение английских фразеологизмов, можно узнать много

интересного из области языкознания, истории, религии, страноведения

англоговорящих стран.

Можно ли научиться переводить английские фразеологизмы?

Перевод фразеологических единиц представляет собой одну из самых

сложных и интересных проблем, разрабатываемых в рамках современной

теории перевода. Трудности перевода фразеологических единиц объясняются

сложностью их семантической структуры.

Для перевода фразеологических единиц с одного языка на другой

необходимо не только хорошее владение языком, но и знание реалий жизни

англоговорящих стран и англоговорящего народа. При переводе конкретного

фразеологизма переводчику надо передать его смысл и отразить его

образность, не упустив при этом стилистическую функцию фразеологизма.

Многим английским фразеологизмам можно подобрать эквиваленты в

русском языке. Фразеологические эквиваленты могут быть полными и

частичными.

Полными фразеологическими эквивалентами являются те

готовые английские эквиваленты, которые совпадают с русскими по

значению, лексическому составу, образности, стилистической окраске и

грамматической структуре. В данном случае нам поможет дословный

перевод. Например,

почивать на лаврах – rest on one’s laurels;

соль земли – the salt of the earth;

играть с огнем – to play with fire;

час настал (пробил) – one’s hour has struck;

нет дыма без огня – there is no smoke without fire;

трудолюбивый как пчела – as busy as a bee.

Частичными фразеологическими эквивалентами являются

фразеологизмы, совпадающие по значению, стилистической окраске и

близкие по образности, но расходящиеся по лексическому составу.

Используя воображение, логическое мышление, а также обладая

определённой долей эрудиции, мы можем догадаться о значении данных

английских идиом. Например,

сулить золотые горы – to promise wonders, to promise the moon;

купить кота в мешке – to buy pig in a poke;

первая ласточка – the first portent (sign);

притча во языцех – the talk of the town;

старо, как мир - as old as the hills.

Исследователи фразеологии обратили внимание на национальную

особенность фразеологизмов. Поэтому фразеологизмы и определили

термином “идиома”, что в переводе с греческого означает “своеобразная”. В

английском языке они тоже называются “idioms”. Некоторые языковеды

поначалу утверждали даже, что фразеологизмы непереводимы на другие

языки. В русском языке есть фразеологизмы, которым нет аналогов в

английском языке.

Например, повесить нос, один как перст, без царя в голове, душа в

пятки ушла, губа - не дура, на лбу написано, а Васька слушает да ест,

слона-то я и не приметил, рыльце в пуху, мартышкин труд, медвежья

услуга. Многие из них родились в произведениях русских писателей.

Кладезем фразеологизмов были басни И. А. Крылова, из которых в нашу

фразеологию пришло большое количество фразеологизмов. Остальные были

созданы народом-языкотворцем.

Для достижения максимальной адекватности при переводе

фразеологизмов с английского на русский язык используют разные виды

перевода: эквивалент, аналог, описательный перевод, антонимический

перевод, калькирование, комбинированный перевод.

Фразеологические единицы широко используются в литературе всех

стилей. И грамотный переводчик не может допустить неточностей в переводе

того или иного фразеологизма. Без знания фразеологии невозможно оценить

яркость и выразительность речи, понять шутку, игру слов, а иногда и просто

смысл всего высказывания. Многие как русские, так и английские идиомы

невозможно перевести на другой язык. Для их понимания необходимо

пользоваться специальными словарями или консультироваться у носителей

языка. В общении с иностранцами надо быть осторожными в применении

идиом. Иностранцу будет непонятно, что значит «душа в пятки ушла» или

«повесить нос».

Фразеологизмы английского и русского языка совершенно разные, так как

у каждого народа свои обычаи и традиции, источниками которых явились

фразеологизмы.

В идиомах разных языков встречаются названия животных. Животные,

которые символизируют человеческие качества, в русском и английском

языках имеют много общего, но есть и различия. Сходство объясняется

общими источниками, а именно – Библией, а различия – национальными,

историческими и географическими особенностями жизни каждого народа.

Часть английских фразеологизмов появилась сравнительно недавно и

связана с реалиями современной жизни. Эти фразеологизмы также могут

представлять определённые трудности для понимания и общения, так как не

все современные устойчивые выражения можно найти в словарях и

справочниках.

Из области космонавтики появились устойчивые сочетания:

Chain reaction- быстрая передача чувств от одного к другому;

To link up - стыковать космические корабли, знакомиться, встречаться;

Из области политики появились сочетания:

Round table - встреча за круглым столом;

To change the channel - сменить тему разговора; сменить пластинку.

Военная терминология:

Stellar brothers - звездные братья, космонавты;

To give a bloody nose – наносить поражение;

Double zero - полное уничтожение оружия;

Из области просвещения появились следующие выражения:

Free school - школа со свободной программой обучения;

Open enrollment - неограниченный прием в ВУЗы в США;

Red brick university - провинциальный университет;

To sound like a computer – четко выражать свои мысли.

Современное образование обеспечивает формирование всесторонне

развитой личности. Школа помогает ученикам войти в сложный мир через

культуру. Язык, будучи одним из основных признаков нации, выражает

культуру народа, который на нём говорит, т.е. национальную культуру.

Большая роль в её постижении отводится фразеологизмам. Они как

свёрнутые тексты представляют собой важную составляющую «языка».

Фразеологизмы не только выражают, но и формируют культурное само-

сознание народа – носителя языка.

Изучение фразеологизмов во многом помогает понять культуру и быт

народов, освоить иностранный язык. На примере рассмотренных

фразеологических единиц можно отчетливо представить, насколько

разнообразны и выразительны фразеологизмы современного английского и

русского языков, насколько они схожи и различны между собой.

1.Cat bird seat

Mocking birds (птицы-пересмешники) are sometimes named to as cat birds.

Mocking birds usually sit at the top of a tree. Hence the cat bird seat is at the top.

1.Chew the fat

The Inuit (инуиты – жители Аляски) used to chew on pieces of whale blubber

almost like chewing gum. The blubber took quite a while to dissolve, so it just sort

of helped pass the time while they were doing something else.

Some other cultures may have used bacon fat in a similar way.

1.Crocodile tears

It was often thought that crocodiles shed tears that fall down into their mouths,

moistening (увлажняя) their food and making it easier for them to swallow

(проглатывать). Hence the tears appear to be an expression of emotion but are in

fact a means to make it easier to swallow.
