What is the Nervous System?

It is the part of the body that coordinates the voluntary and involuntary actions of the body, and transmits signals between different parts of the body.

2 main parts:- Central Nervous System- Peripheral Nervous System

Page 5: It is the part of the body that coordinates the voluntary and involuntary actions of the body, and transmits.

Central Nervous System The part of the nervous system that

integrates the information that it receives from, and coordinates the activity of all the parts of the body.

It contains majority of the nervous system such as:

-Brain - Spinal Cord

Page 7: It is the part of the body that coordinates the voluntary and involuntary actions of the body, and transmits.

Peripheral Nervous System The part of the nervous system

consisting of nerves and ganglia outside of the brain and spinal cord.

Its main function is to connect the central nervous system to the limbs and organs.

Divided into 2 parts:- Somatic Nervous System- Autonomic Nervous System

Somatic Nervous System Is the part of the PNS associated with

the voluntary control of body movements.

Consists of efferent nerves which are responsible for simulating muscle contraction.

Autonomic Nervous System Is part of the PNS that acts as the

control system. It controls visceral functions such as:

- Heart rate- Digestion- Respiratory rate

Parts of the Nervous System

Neuron- Nervous cell that processes and transmits information.

Axons- Nerve fiber that conducts electrical impulses.

Neurotransmitters- Endogenous chemicals that transmit signals from a neuron to target cell across a synapse.

Synapses- Structure that permits a neuron to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another cell.

Glial Cells- Non- Neuronal cells that provide support and nutrition to maintain homeostasis.

Hydrocephalus A buildup of fluid inside the skull that leads to brain

swelling. It is caused by an imbalance of how much fluid is

produced and how much is absorbed into the blood stream.

Signs and symptoms:- Large head- Loss of coordination or balance- Loss of memory Treatments- Shunt- Ventriculostomy

Multiple Sclerosis Disease in which your body’s immune system eats

away at the protective sheath (myelin) that covers your nerves.

It is an autoimmune disease. Signs and symptoms:- Numbness or weakness - Double vision or blurring of vision- Slurred Speech Treatments:- Cannot be cured- Corticosteroid- Plasmapheresis

Epilepsy A central nervous system disorder in which the

nerve cell activity in your brain is disturbed, causing a seizure during which you experience abnormal behavior.

Signs and symptoms:- Temporary confusion- Uncontrollable jerking

Treatment: - Vagus nerve stimulation

- Ketogenic diet

Parkinson’s Disease A Progressive disorder of the nervous system

that affects your movement. Signs and symptoms:

- Shaky- Slowed movement- Speech changes

Treatments:- Cannot be cured- Medications- Carbidopa
