Fantastic Okinawa Okinawa Food Flea Shurijo celebrates harvest with ‘Chushu-no-Utage’ C hushu-no-Utage (Mid-Autumn Celebration) is one of the seven banquets that during the Ryukyu Kingdom Era were organized to show hospital- ity to ‘sapposhi’ envoys of the emperor pf China. Chushu-no-Utage always took place Aug. 15th of the lunar calendar under the full moon. This year the lunar Aug. 15th falls on Sep. 27th of the western calendar, and in honor of the tradition, the Shurijo Castle holds a Chushu-no Utage celebra- tion on both days of the weekend, on Sep. 26th and 27th. The highlight of the event is four Okinawan Living National Treasures showcasing authentic tradi- tional performing arts that were once performed exclusively for the nobility of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Now everyone can enjoy this real and prestigious performance for free. In addition to the show, the next new King-and-Queen contest will be held. A video of the cere- mony is at http://oki- park.jp/shurijo/informa- tion/detail/2004 The ceremony is held on Sep. 26th and 27th from 18:30 to 21:00 on the ‘Unaa’ courtyard in front of the main castle. Eventually a decision was made to have the event on Sep. 27th on the grounds of Ginowan Marina, the venue of the original plan. The Food Flea is a family fun event featuring live entertainment, a handicraft market and, of course, food items of every imaginable kind. Many of them are novelty products that their creators are bringing to the public for the first time. Small stores and shops that make delicious products using top quality ingredients, but are known only among people, who have a palate and passion for special treats, set a shop at the event. Among them are a café specializing in Thai food, a popular ‘yatai’ food stall that is open only at night-time on a parking lot next to Okinawa Bank Head Office in Kumoji, Naha City, a bakery that sells additive-free bread made using wild yeast, a popular hamburger shop from Nago, a gelato shop and others. There are more than 50 stores taking part. This being a true flea market, there is a musical instrument store, furniture shop and fabric store as well.
