Jayu Hapkido 自由 合氣道
The Unencumbered Path of the Harmonious Spirit
Jayu Hapkido Follows a traditional Taoist philosophy in which its Disciples areencouraged to follow their own paths. Emphasizing Principle elements of eachTechnique allows for the practitioner to explore variations in technique andcustom tailor them to the practitioner’s Body Type, age, Physical ability andpersonal Philosophy. The techniques in Jayu Hapkido are the basic elements ofself defense, like brush strokes, when combined they express the artist’s truepath. In this way each practitioner learns their own rhythm and fluidity blendinghard and soft, Um and Yang. By focusing on the basic elements and principles,Students of Jayu Hapkido Are free to explore their own paths.

This Diagram organizes each of basic techniques into one of 8 Categories, Locks, takedowns, Kicking techniques, grappling techniques, blocks, footwork, strikesand meditations, each category is expanded in the pages below. No onetechnique is more important than any other, each is just one element of a completemartial art. Mastering the principles behind these basic techniques opens the doorto a much greater understanding of the martial path.

Stances
Stances are at the core of every martial art. It is through our stances that we learnabout stability, structure, power generation, mobility, and grounding energy.Without stances there would be no stable platform from which to launch
techniques.

Basic Locks
These basic locks help us to understand the way in which the body moves. This iscrucial to understanding how to control and manipulate it, the basic arm locksinvolve the wrist, elbow and shoulder,
as the wrist rotates with the crossing of the radius and ulna there are onlytwo types of wrist locks, Inside rotation wrist locks and outside rotation wristlocks. keeping in mind that there are many variations of these two based on yourposition in relation to the other person, use of pressure points, hand positions Ect.
as the Elbow bends on a hinge joint there are only two elbow locks, astraight bar about a fulcrum and a bent elbow lock. Variations on these depend onhand positions, leverage and body position in relation to the other person.

Advanced Locks
Here we see the same basic principles applied from different positions andto different parts of the body, by understanding the ways in which thesetechniques work and why they are done the way that they are, we can applyvariations of these techniques from a wide range of different positions and todifferent joints. Ultimately these principles open up a nearly infinite number ofvariations in technique making them simple and intuitive without spending yearson rote memorization in order to learn thousands of “different” techniques

Takedowns
There are countless variations on throwing and take down techniques butthese basic techniques Help us to understand the principles of structure, massand balance. Structure is the physical alignment of the body, its geometric formthat distributes weight, and redirects energy into the ground. when mass isaligned with structure a person is physically balanced.
each of these techniques utilize principles that miss align the mass andstructure to take a person off balance. Some of these techniques attack thestructure by lifting an opponent up breaking his or her connection with theground, while others attack the opponent’s mass and missalign it from theopponent’s structure while some employ mechanisms to simultaneously disruptboth.

Basic Kicking
These 4 basic Kicks help us to understand the methods of powergeneration. The round house utilizes torque to generate maximum power andspeed, while the front kick, back kick and side kick, utilize structure and bodyalignment to put as much mass behind the kick as possible. The basic kicks cantarget any part of the body making them very useful. these kicking methods builda foundation for more advanced kicks as well as unique combinations.
Map Ranks Weapons
Advanced Kicks
These more advanced kicks utilize a variety of principles to maximizepower, speed and efficiency, including torque, structure, gravity, and bodymechanics, each of these kicks can also be used in deceptive ways adding a levelof strategy many of these kicks also target specific areas of the body making themvery useful for forcing an opponent to react in a certain way
Map Ranks Weapons
Grappling Techniques
These techniques focus on positioning and flow between positions. This is veryimportant because whether your goal is to get back to your feet and escape, or togain an advantageous position to execute a lock these principles are invaluable. The fluidity that they teach is also essential for developing one’s own abilities onthe ground.
Map Ranks Weapons
Basic Blocks
These are the basic blocks, while they are often considered to be hard andexternal they can just as easily be executed with soft fluidity. In these blocks welearn that a block can just as easily be a strike. As each of these blocks isexecuted the body is also rotated slightly not only driving mass behind the blockgiving it more power but also to minimize the center line, these principles build thefoundation for the more advanced blocking techniques while teaching theprinciples of center line and line of attack.
Map Ranks Weapons
Advanced Blocks
These Blocking techniques utilize principles that not only block but redirectincoming attacks slightly off of the center line, as well as bridging the gap between
hard and soft applications
Map Ranks Weapons
Footwork
Footwork is the cornerstone of martial arts. Through footwork we learn to controland maintain distancing and positioning in relation to an opponent. Whether it is
advancing or retreating footwork is essential to the rhythm of combat.
Map Ranks Weapons
Basic Strikes
These basic strikes help us to understand how striking power is generated as thebody expands in both directions pushing off the ground and directing that energyforward into the strike while the body rotates both to generate torque and to close
distance allowing the strike to make contact.
Map Ranks Weapons
Advanced Strikes
These more advanced strikes are crucial to understanding that every part of thebody is useful, speed and power can be generated in a variety of different wayswith many parts of the body, including striking with the elbows and knees as we
close the distance with an opponent. These Strikes also help us to managedistance and give a larger arsenal of tools to use in various situations.
Meditations
Map Ranks Weapons
Often Dismissed for Due to a lack of understanding Ki and Meditation areabsolutely essential not only to martial arts but life in general. Ki is not some
supernatural force but rather one’s own will. It is through meditation (a completefocusing of the mind on a singular though) that we learn to control our will and
push our minds and bodies further than we believed possible in order to actualizea greater potential.
Map Ranks Weapons
there are only so many ways to punch, to kick, to block, only so many ways thebody can bend and twist. It is the way that the techniques are applied that makesone style different from another, Jayu Hapkido has no set method strategy or wayand instead seeks to expose its students to many ways so that they can follow the
path that suits them best

Weapons Techniques
Techniques for using as well as defending against weapons are taught to seniorstudents who have a firm grasp on the principles of Hapkido. Weapons includehard and bladed weapons such as Swords, batons, staffs, and knives, as well as
soft weapons such as rope, or clothing,
Gumdo and center line control strikes
This diagram shows the relationship between the 5 angles of the internal strikingmethod (centerline) and is used with two handed swords/sticks. The entirety of
Jayu Hapkido’s sword method is illustrated in this diagram.
