Name Sleuth Work

Look Out for Wildlife

Wild animals are amazing! They can be scary too! Mom and Dad took me to Yellowstone National Park. Many wild animals live in its fields and woods.

One day we drove through the park. We saw a herd of bison. Another name for bison is buffalo. A bison has shaggy hair and a big bump on its back. We drove on and reached a dead end. Suddenly a huge bear came toward the car. It looked mad!

Dad said, “Don’t worry. She can’t get in the car.” Dad slowly backed up the car. Then we drove away. The huge bear watched us go. My heart was beating fast. But I still took some pictures. They show the mother bear—and its cub! Dad said the bear was just protecting its baby.

Is Your Polar Bear Happy?

What would you do with an unhappy elephant? Some scientists study animal behavior. They can answer this question.

Some scientists watch animals in the wild. Others see how people’s pets act. Still others watch zoo animals. They see how the animals behave. Is the animal comfortable in its zoo home? Does it eat enough? How does it get along with other animals?

At one zoo, a polar bear seemed upset. He swam up and down his pool all day. Scientists watched the bear for several days. They took notes. They decided to give the bear more toys. They played games with him.

At another zoo, some elephants were causing problems. Scientists watched their behavior. Then they gave the elephants more exercise. They fed them different foods. They put the foods in feeders off the ground. The elephants behaved better.

People don’t understand everything about animals. These scientists help us learn more.

Cam’s New Voice

Cam was unhappy. He would be in the hospital for many weeks. He had a tube in his throat. He could not talk. How could he tell his mom or dad that he wanted something? How could he talk with friends?

One day a nurse had an idea. She found a special tool for him to use. Cam’s eyes lit up when she gave it to him. The tool looked like a computer keyboard with a screen. Cam typed a word. He typed a sentence. Then he pushed a button. The computer said what Cam typed!

This computer uses special software. It helps people who have difficulty speaking. It gives them a “voice.” The software can fit on the tiniest computers. This software has given people freedom to communicate. That’s something to shout about!
