The Fund is named after the daughter of Ken and Sharon Bradwell. Sian (pronounced “shahn”, her name is Welsh Gaelic) died on March 15th, 1986 of a rare form of cancer, primitive neuroectodermal tumour, which doctors thought started in her pancreas and spread through her bloodstream. She was only 17 months old. The Tournament is a celebration of her life, and the hope that other children may be helped in their own struggle for life.

Welcome to the 26th Sian Bradwell Softball Tournament (Montreal) and 5th Sian Bradwell Softball Tournament (Toronto)! It is always a delight to see so many friends at these and all other events and to meet the new participants each year.

Together with all our friends, we have been raising funds for the purchase of medical equipment through sports events, collection of donations and other sundry (but always fun!) efforts since 1987. They bring us together as families and friends, and remind us how blessed we are to have good health and that strong families build a strong society. These events would not be possible without the help of the sponsors who provide the facilities and most especially, the organisers and volunteers who actually run the events. We are deeply grateful that you have chosen to support our efforts on behalf of the Montreal Children’s Hospital, SickKids Hospital in Toronto and McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton, and thank you for giving your personal time so generously.

For the past 25 years, our annual book has been in paper format and the production team has done a superb job. The book serves to report on our fundraising activities, acknowledge the contributions of our sponsors and donors, and doubles as a programme for the softball tournaments. Rising postal costs have dictated that we change to electronic format, however, so the book will be available on our web site and will be distributed via e-mail. One of the positive aspects of this is that sponsor advertisements are linked to web pages or e-mail addresses, so the reader has only to click on the ad when looking for further information or services. Sîan (pronounced “SHAHN”, hers is a Welsh Gaelic name which means ‘precious gift of God’) was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal on October 3rd, 1984. Her mother found a lump on her foot on March 6th, and after undergoing a series of diagnostic tests, was diagnosed as having a rare form of cancer called ‘primitive neuroectodermal tumour’ (PNT) in her spine, liver and foot. Normally a brain tumour, doctors thought it had started in her pancreas and spread through her bloodstream. Sîan was treated with chemotherapy at the

Montreal Children’s Hospital and radiation at the Montreal General Hospital, since the Montreal Children’s did not have the facilities at the time.

She responded well for a short time, but when it was evident that the drugs were not working any longer, she underwent radical abdominal surgery in early October of 1985. Followed by an intensive course of radiation treatment.

On Christmas Day, 1985, doctors found that the tumours had re-appeared in her legs, jaw and elsewhere. Sîan underwent radiation treatment again, and since the regular chemotherapy ‘protocol’ did not work, she was treated with experimental drugs.

They did not work, either, and on March 15th, she passed away. She was 17 months old.

Sîan Bradwell Endowment Funds

(Montreal and Toronto)

The first Sîan Bradwell Fund was established at the Montreal Children's Hospital in 1990, the intent being to purchase medical equipment for the Haematology-Oncology department by raising funds and donating them in Sîan’s name. In 2000, the Sîan Bradwell Fund was incorporated federally as a not-for-profit organisation and received its charter through Letters Patent. The objectives were formalised in the incorporation, and are the same today as they were in 1990 – and indeed since the very first donation was made in 1986.

Volunteers conduct fundraising events for 3 hospitals: the Montreal Children’s, Hospital For Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, and McMaster Children’s in Hamilton. Funds raised through events conducted in Toronto and surrounding areas are donated to SickKids, and monies raised in the Oakville to Hamilton region go to the McMaster Children’s Hospital. Each hospital has its own criteria for setting up an endowment, and there is usually a time limit by when the target must be reached.

In 2007, the Advisory Board (Montreal) -- all long-time volunteers -- decided to create the Sîan Bradwell Endowment Fund as a means of providing resources for the future equipment needs of the Oncology department. The basic difference between the Sîan Bradwell Fund and the Sîan Bradwell Endowment Fund is that the first addresses the present needs of the Oncology department while the Endowment Fund makes provision for future needs. From the total of funds raised each year in Montreal, a portion is set aside for future purchases, while the bulk of monies raised go towards funding the immediate needs of the Oncology department. However, donations go to the Sian Bradwell Fund unless the donor specifically requests that it be directed to the Endowment Fund.

As a part of the continuous effort to build Sîan’s legacy, the Advisory Board (Toronto) established an endowment fund at the Hospital For Sick Children in 2012. Donations raised online through SickKids web site will continue to address the immediate needs of the Oncology department, while selected extra fundraising efforts -- such as event sale proceeds -- will benefit the Endowment Fund. Annual income earned from the endowment will also be designated to purchase highest priority equipment. We believe the endowment fund will help us to achieve our vision of providing necessary tools for the better diagnosis and treatment of children with cancer, in perpetuity.

Good Afternoon. My name is Tobin and I'm 13.

I was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour, called an Anaplastic Ependymoma, in 2002 when I was 2 1/2. I had surgeries, chemo and 33 radiation treatments. The cancer returned when I was 5 and I had more surgery which was followed by 11/2 years of chemo. During that long time of chemo, I was at the hospital often. Unfortunately, the cancer returned again when I was 9. I had another surgery and 30 more radiation treatments.

A year ago, I had surgery to replace missing skull and that has improved my quality of life as I experience fewer headaches and sports aren't as risky. We are all very grateful to report that my MRls have been clear since the end of treatment in October 2009.

I've spent a lot of time in the hospital over the past 11 years and am glad for all the things which make it special. I've never minded going to SickKids, even when i know that I'm going to have surgery, IVs, needle pokes, or other procedures. It's a very unique hospital filled with the best doctors, nurses, and other staff.

I'm graduating from grade 8 in a few days and then I'll be at Mayfield Senior Secondary in the drama program in September. I'm playing ball and golfing this summer. This is all good stuff for me, and I'm grateful. Sadly, hundreds of children are going through chemo, radiation, and other treatment for various childhood cancers.

I understand that funds from the 4th Annual Sian Bradwell Softball Tournament will go to purchase an anesthesia monitor for the SickKids Oncology department.

Thank you, Ken and Sharon Bradwell, for raising awareness and research funds for childhood cancer in Sian's memory. Thank you to Peggy and the organizing committee for inviting me again this year and for putting so many hours into making today's event a success.

Thank you to the Sian Bradwell Fund for Children With Cancer for hosting their 4th annual Rock ‘n’ Bowl event in support of McMaster Children’s Hospital this year, along with all of the friends and family that participated. The funds from this fun initiative were very warmly received by our Pediatric Oncology Unit once again.

Recent funds that have been generated through this event have been designated for the purchase of furniture for our new “clinic/counseling room” in our Pediatric Oncology Unit. This room is used primarily when families need a quiet space to recover from the shock of being informed of their child’s cancer diagnosis, and to have an intimate discussion with a doctor regarding the subsequent treatment plan.

McMaster Children’s Hospital is one of Canada’s leading pediatric health care facilities and is the regional referral centre for children who are seriously ill, injured or require specialized services in south-central Ontario (Burlington, Fort Erie, Guelph, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, Oakville, and all points in between). With more than 210,000 patient visits a year, we provide a full range of specialized pediatric services including a dedicated emergency department, child and youth mental health services, over 40 outpatient clinics, the province’s largest neonatal intensive care unit and the only pediatric trauma centre in the region.

The planning continues for the scheduled opening of the new McMaster Children’s Health Centre in the fall of 2015. This new facility will house all of our specialized outpatient services that currently operate at our Chedoke campus, including autism, developmental pediatrics & rehabilitation, mental health, and prosthetics & orthotics. It will provide services for more than 70,000 patient visits annually and exist as the only Centre of its kind in Canada.

On the day of the bowling event, the Toronto Argonauts were leading the Hamilton TigerCats in a fundraising challenge for McMaster Children’s Hospital, thereby winning the Sian Bradwell Trophy. Following the event, however, the Hamilton TigerCats came through with extra donations to surpass the Argos total. Our thanks go to both teams and their supporters for their great generosity. The biggest winners are the children!
