Tigers milestone

» Beau Maister with daughter Rylee.

rides the bumps to reach

Football has always been the driving force in Beau Maister’s life. Indeed, his adult years have revolved around the code. He spoke this week about “being a long-time retired” and thus why he wanted to be involved in the game for as long as he can. Naturally, that desire depends on his 32-year-old body handling the conditions. As a key position player at AFL and WAFL level his 194cm frame has taken some hard knocks. Yet nothing compares to the illness in 2014 that almost killed him. Even then, it was the thought of being amongst his beloved Claremont teammates that drove his recovery. And that desire will be rewarded this round when Maister notches his 150th match for Tigers. It was a milestone that was in jeopardy when he was rushed to hospital three-and-a -half years ago with a blood infection that almost ended everything. After finishing his stint with St Kilda, which followed six years on West Coast’s list, Maister returned to Perth to have some clean-up surgery and resume his career at Claremont Oval. Instead, on the first week of pre-season training he was in intensive care battling Golden Staph. “It put a few things in perspective,” Maister recounted this week. “I just felt for the people around me, like my family, afterwards. “I was oblivious to it really. It was right at the last minute that I was diagnosed with it and it progressed quite fast. I was a bit stubborn with it in that I was a bit sore but saying I’d be okay. “The drive to the hospital was all that I could remember for a couple of days because I was in intensive care and it was intense. My poor wife and my mum, what they had to go through had the biggest impact on me. “I was in hospital for 10 days on a variety of anti-biotics and I lost 12 kilograms. After that I was on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week drip for another month. It was really scary stuff.” Once the danger had passed, football was again on Maister’s agenda.

He rebounded to play 15 matches in 2015 and remain a key component of the Claremont forward line. “I’ve done nothing else but have a football program to commit to since 2002 when I first moved up (from Albany),” Maister said. “Every season or pre-season I’m always training two-to-three nights a week. “The thought of not having that didn’t sit well and it still doesn’t sit well with me. I just love the team environment, I love the relationships you build and most importantly I love the football club I’m representing. “There was never a question of was I going to get back into it and commit? With how much I could commit was always the issue – and how I was going to manage my load. But coming back was a no-brainer.” Maister isn’t setting any time limits on his playing career although juggling Claremont duties with a growing family, daughter Rylee arrived last November, and work in a growing construction business takes some clever planning. There are some young Tigers who are also driving Maister to continue. And if he sees the season out he will graduate to the WA football 200-game club when his AFL and State matches are considered. A new home base at Claremont Oval has also injected life into Maister and his teammates. Even the prospect of facing the rampaging Subiaco line-up this round has the Tiger excited.

“They are the absolute benchmark since I’ve been back – even way before that. But I was fortunate to win a grand final (2011) against them,” Maister said. “I’ve always remembered them having such a strong culture with the leaders at the top, Aidan Parker, Marc Webb, Chad Cossom and little whipper snippers under them like Kyal Horlsey and Chris Phelan who then step up to set such a high standard. “That’s what we’re aiming for. We’re hunting them – and they know that. But what better challenge than go out there and throw everything at the benchmark and play your best to hopefully become the best.”

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 911, Subiaco WA 6904. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

Sometimes I find myself wondering exactly what constitutes “football memorabilia”. To some, it might seem obvious, but it’s an important question for anyone with a finite amount of storage space and a growing collection. For instance, it’s clearly a football collectable if it’s a magazine or program from the footy. But what if the item is not about football, but was written by a famous footballer? You see what I’m getting at. One great example from last year’s column was a bookie’s bag belonging to West Perth star Neville Hebbard. It’s not really footy memorabilia, but a keen collector of West Perth memorabilia could certainly find a reason to keep it in the collection. Over the summer, I was hit with such a conundrum. Mine related to 1920s East Perth star Billy Hilton, who played in five straight premierships for the Royals in just 98 games with the club. Back in 1921, the East Perth Football Club presented Hilton with a beautiful mantel clock, which still works when wound. The clock had been bought some years ago by a hobbyist who fixes old clocks for fun. And he did a nice job bringing back to its former glory. Needless to say, I was pretty keen to have a look at a clock presented by the club to Hilton. But what I found when I finally got to see the clock was that it was given to him as a gift to mark his marriage to Gladys Pamment. So, is it a piece of football memorabilia? Or is it a wedding present? Or both? In this case, I was so taken with the clock itself that I was able to justify the purchase on the basis that it would actually look good on the mantelpiece. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; provenance is the most important thing in collecting football memorabilia. In fact, in collecting pretty much anything. Take, for instance, this little tinnie badge, which features a “WPFC” logo and “1918” on it. Back in mid-2013, one of these turned up at auction and I told WAFL Collectables readers at the time that it had sold for $33. But I stopped short of saying it was a West Perth membership badge, given there are other possible explanations for the “WPFC” acronym. Perhaps of greatest concern to me was that the badge had a maker’s mark on the edge, which revealed it was made by a company with a presence in both Adelaide and Melbourne. Why would the Cardies have had it made in the east when there were badge makers here at the time?

One of the same badges hit the market last week and is being sold as a “1918 West Perth Football Club Membership Tinnie Badge”. It could well be a West Perth badge. But I’m not 100% convinced. And for $750 I would need to be absolutely sure before I would consider buying it.Regular readers of this column probably know that I’m a sucker for a mystery. The satisfaction gained from finding out when a WAFL collectable was made, or by whom, is almost as good as getting a new piece for the collection. And one mystery that I had been trying to solve for about five years was finally put to bed last week when I came across a newspaper advertisement from 1965. It finally provided me with a full list of posters issued by the Sunday Times that year. I had only ever seen six of the eight posters, none of which were in great nick. But I now know that the players featured were: Lorne Cook (C), Tony Casserley (EF),

Derek Chadwick (EP), Barry Cable (P), Garry Scott (South Fremantle), Brian Sarre (S), Fred Castledine (SD) and Ron Evans (WP). I also now know that each poster cost three-and-a-half shillings and could be obtained directly from the Sunday Times office in Stirling St, or by mail for an extra sixpence. You could even buy the whole set for 28 shillings (or 30 if you wanted them posted). None of that explains why they never turn up on the market, though. Have you ever seen one of these?

by Sean Cowan

During 2018, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

Saturday April 21, Lathlain Park

Perth East PerthStory so far: The Demons got the confidence-booster they so desperately needed. There were some anxious moments but last year’s wooden spooners rose to defeat the reigning premier, Peel Thunder, by one straight kick.Running hot: Spencer White kicked 12 goals in an injury-hit 2017 season but he has already notched 10 in 2018 – a tally lifted by his best-on-ground return of five goals in the win over the Thunder.Who is to come: West Perth (A), Bye, Claremont (A), Subiaco (H).

Story so far: Last week’s bye has stopped East Perth’s momentum. The Royals started with a humiliating loss to Subiaco but immediately bounced back to embarrass some so-called WAFL judges with a strong win over West Perth.Running hot: Will Maginness has been a consistent performer for East Perth over a couple of seasons and his experience has proven a great advantage for the younger Royals players.Who is to come: Peel Thunder (H), East Frem (A), South Frem (H), Swan Dists (H).

Last time they met: Round 22 2017, Perth 14.14 (98) d East Perth 13.15 (93).Cody Ninyette had his kicking boots on with seven goals, but it was veteran Clint Jones who proved the difference between the teams with 38 possessions. East Perth received just 10 free kicks for the match. The key: For one of the few times over the past few seasons Perth has a midfield unit that is giving the team a chance to be more than competitive. Stopping Cody Leggett, Michael Sinclair, Clint Jones and Corey Byrne will be the only the way the Royals can triumph.

Subiaco v Claremont Perth v east Perth

Swan Districts v West Perth

East Fremantle v south Fremantle

Thursday April 19, Leederville Oval.

Subiaco ClaremontStory so far: More like a fairytale than a run-of-the-mill story. Subiaco has kicked 68 goals in three games and has a percentage above 254 following comprehensive victories over East Perth, South Fremantle and Swan Districts.Running hot: Where do you start? With so many options through midfield the Lions have a wealth of talent driving the team. But Hayden Kennedy’s form as an attacking defender has been particularly pleasing.Who is to come: Bye, West Perth (H), Peel Thunder (A), Perth (A).

Story so far: Had chance to overcome West Perth in Round 1 before having a break and rebounding with a tight victory over East Fremantle. Keifer Yu kicked the winning goal in the dying stages to put Claremont in the top five.Running hot: Alex Manuel had a reputation for goalkicking at colts and reserves level and he posted 20 majors in 2017. He has followed that form with 6.1 in the first two matches of the new season.Who is to come: South Fremantle (Albany), Peel (A), Perth (H), South Fremantle (A).

Last time they met: Round 17 2017, Subiaco 14.10 (94) d Claremont 7.12 (54).Leigh Kitchin, Kyal Horsley and Adam Cockie dominated midfield as the Lions roared in Esperance. Ben Sokol booted four goals for Subiaco. Defender Haydn Busher worked tirelessly for the Tigers. The key: Is it so simple as Claremont praying for a miracle? Subiaco is so strong now and has won seven of the past 10 encounters between the teams at Leederville Oval. Jared Hardisty, Jye Bolton, Keifer Yu and Tom Lee have to be at their peak for Claremont to win.

Saturday April 21, Steel Blue Oval

Swan Districts West PerthStory so far: There was a reality check for Swan Districts last week when it ran into a white-hot Subiaco. But the strides taken by the black-and-whites in the first two rounds cannot be forgotten. If only Swans could bottle that form.Running hot: Tobe Watson, 20, got his chance at league level in the latter stages of last season but he has quickly cemented his place in the Swan Districts line-up with 22 marks in the first three rounds. Who is to come: East Fremantle (H), South Fremantle (A), Bye, East Perth (A).

Story so far: Successive losses to East Perth and South Fremantle have left the West Perth match committee with some concerns. Not capitalising on the strong start against the Bulldogs will be one of the key focus points.Running hot: He might have relinquished the captaincy but Jay van Berlo is still a key leader for the Falcons and his guidance almost kick-started the West Perth engine room in Round 3.Who is to come: Perth (A), Subiaco (A), East Fremantle (H), Bye.

Last time they met: Elimination Final 2017, Swan Districts 11.9 (75) d West Perth 8.12 (60).Swan Districts blew West Perth out of the contest with 5.1 to 0.5 in the opening stanza. Tony Notte and Sam Taylor were outstanding for the black and whites as was veteran Freddie Clutterbuck. Michael Lourey made the most of his chances in the Falcons attack. The key: How much doubt has the loss to Subiaco put into Swan Districts? Adam Pickering’s men touched the ball just 280 times last round. It will be up Nathan Blakely and Corey Gault to try to inspire a turnaround in the Swans engine room.

Sunday April 22, East Fremantle Oval

East Fremantle South FremantleStory so far: With a bit of luck East Fremantle could be undefeated from three matches instead of having a 1-2 record after tight losses to Peel and Claremont (last round) around the tight victory over Perth. Running hot: The four goals from his boot were very handy but the Sharks were also happy with Jack Perham’s seven inside 50m entries in the clash with Claremont. Perham has seven goals for the year.Who is to come: Swan Districts (A), East Perth (H), West Perth (A), Peel Thunder (A).

Story so far: Lacklustre is the best description for South Fremantle’s two outings in 2018. There was the big loss to Subiaco followed by a slow first three quarters before storming home to defeat West Perth.Running hot: Nick Suban has quickly settled into the South Fremantle midfield brigade, averaging 20 possessions in the first two matches and he was the inspiration in the come-from-behind win over the Falcons.Who is to come: Claremont (Albany), Swan Districts (A), East Perth (A), Claremont (H).

Last time they met: Round 20 2017, South Fremantle 22.9 (141) b East Fremantle 15.6 (96).Tom Vandeleur and Ryan Cook set the South Fremantle train into motion after half-time as the home team booted 12 goals in 50 minutes. Jon Marsh and Jayden Schofield were the leading contributors for the Sharks. The key: If Nick Kommer can continue his 2018 form then East Fremantle are a realistic chance to hold off a South Fremantle team that will be keen to finally make a statement. Kommer’s hard work is highlighted by his 12 free kicks in three matches

We understand that choosing how you live your future is one of the biggest decisions you will make. That’s why we’ve asked residents like Athena and Victor to share their own personal story on how they came to start life at St Ives Murdoch.

It’s about connecting with likeminded people who may have similar personal experiences; a way for you to find out how St Ives Murdoch can help you feel more connected, more active, safer, and happier with how you live your life.

But don’t just take our word for it…

You can read more of our St Ives stories on our website. Or you can book a St Ives Murdoch tour and meet our residents for yourself.

We look forward to being a part of your story.
