1. What is one must-have accessory for the home? Potted plants or a vase of flowers or branches. An interior needs nature to bring it to life.

2. What color do you like to work with? In interiors, I’m a sucker for dining rooms in a warm shade of salmon or pumpkin, colors that make the people and the food look good.

3. What is a favorite artifact that you own? I’m drawn to ceramics from the Song Dynasty, the simplicity of form and deep rich glazes have an aesthetic kinship with 18th- to 19th-century American pottery. There’s a lidded

bowl I found in Hong Kong; it’s on my desk holding paper clips. It’s beautiful and

useful and 750 years old.

4. How do you like to spend your down time? Taking a

nap is my favorite activity. In Maine, we have a hammock between two pine trees at the

edge of the bank before it drops into the water.

5. You are recently married. What is a treasured gift from your wife? For Christmas, she gave me a wonderful painting of eucalyptus trees along the California coast. I love it because it reminds me of my time there.

6. What is your favorite classical motif? Moldings. Plain or fancy, through scale and proportion, big or small, they let you define the character of the house.

7. What item is critical to have in a home? From a decorating standpoint, furniture that’s comfortable. A great big sofa filled with a lot of down that you can sink into and stretch out on.

The grandson and great-great-grandson of architects, Gil Schafer III grew up in locations around the United States and

in the Bahamas, then went on to acquire a degree in architecture at Yale. After working with various distinguished firms, in 2002 he founded his own company focused on balancing architecture, landscape and interior design. “My goal is to create places that celebrate the way people like to live, repositories for memories,” says Schafer. “If a house is going to feel like home, it has to create opportunities for memories even in the smallest moments of life.”

He recently married interior designer Courtnay Daniels, and they reside in a New York City apartment, a Greek Revival–inspired mansion Schafer designed in Hudson Valley, and a breezily modern gable-roofed home Schafer renovated on the coast of Maine. g pschafer.com.

Winner of countless accolades for residential designs, G.P. Schafer Architect was founded by Gil Schafer III, one of the world’s leading experts on contemporary classical architecture and author of the best-selling books The Great American House and A Place to Call Home. —Sharon King Hoge
