!7 Marshalltown Aviation Inc., is a subsidiary branch of Midland Aircraft Y<YZ"##%#=+#!"<<+<Z"#/['<=!=Z"""#+!<<\#%!]"%!<Z"#<\]"%!"<!#!"\FAA approved maintenance, aircraft management, fuel sales and local concierge services. The company started out in 1949 as Johnson Aviation in Newton, Iowa with Earl Johnson being the owner. When Bill Smothers joined Earl in 1973, Marshalltown Aviation was born under the parent company: Midland Aircraft Sales and Service. That company was owned by Earl and Bill until Earl retired in the 1990’s. In 2009, Ethan Nasalroad and Steve Valbarcht purchased the company from Bill. The two developed it into the current '<"<<%"#%! !%""#%!]"%!"<!#!"<Z"#<added to it a maintenance, sales and aircraft management business with /+!=< One of the most useful aspects of their business that many people don’t know about is that according to owner Steve Valbarcht, “Marshall-town Aviation provides services to many local companies to destinations all over the United States.” He continues, “In fact, many of the airplanes you see arriving in Mar-shalltown have been across the country contributing greatly to the growth of local businesses.” Marshalltown Aviation’s services can, therefore, be used for both personal and business purposes to take people to a destination of choice or to receive business partners from anywhere in the U.S. Being involved in the community also plays a crucial part for the company. According to Valbarcht, “Community involvement is the best part of being in Marshalltown.” He added, “The town has many very dedicated community organizations that are working hard to support local '<"<<<^%<!+!%"<#'<""#<!+/#!!%"=!as well as an increase in local organizations using airport services to expand. This community involvement is the part that Valbracht enjoys the most. “I am able to help other businesses and families grow and succeed. Whether it be a a local business investing in growth or a family taking much needed time away, we have the ability to contribute.” Since this contribution is so palpable in this industry, they truly know whether they have supported the local economy which Valbracht says is the most rewarding factor for the company and its owners.

Valbracht also credits the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce as a vast contributor to Marshalltown Aviation’s success. “The goals of the Chamber directly impact the success of our business,” he says, “as well as the potential opportunities for our business in the future.” As a result, Valbracht says, “Marshalltown Aviation operates in a city that I am proud to call my home.”

This event will be held in the Fisher Community Center. The pieces have been bequeathed to the CIAA by the former Director of the CIAA, and the collection originator, Gary Eason Eige. The Ceramics Collection was formed in 1970, focusing primarily on utilitarian, vases, boxes, plates, and cups. It was extended to include a diversity of contemporary and historical work from a broad variety of geographical sources including Canada, England, Japan, Korean, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Guinea, Rhodesian, Scotland, Spain and the United States. After the CIAA collected privately for several years, a museum pur-chase grant was awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts. This <!%/<!!"!%'<=#"/#!!+the purchase of major art works by living American artists in the medium of clay. Additional community grants were received from the Iowa Arts Council, the City of Marshalltown and Marshall County.

*(" ,

Throughout the process of building the collection, the CIAA maintained a selection committee to carefully review and select pieces aligned with the collection’s intent – education. Eason Eige’s gift of 20 more ceramic pieces will continue !+/!%"<==<}/""=<in the collection either in style, ge-ography or technique. When a piece helps an individual to understand a new concept, learn about a new glaze or technique or become aware of the art of other cultures, the col-lection has succeeded. The Central Iowa Art Associ-ation (CIAA), founded in 1946, serves as stewards of the Ceram-"#<#!""<=/!agency dedicated to promoting visual arts through quality instruc-tion, exhibitions and community outreach. All proceeds from the October 2 fundraiser will go to the Central Iowa Art Association. When a person starts looking at the issue in that light, it hits home how residential development truly impacts the greater community. >>*G Following the completion of the housing study, MEDIC endeavored to create a working group of stakeholders related to residential development. What became obvious when this group was together discussing the study was that our #"<<<!<"Z/!<<!""%'<^"!%Iowa communities were experiencing the same thing. We weren’t isolated in our housing issues. %!="<#<<"!"/"<<<%Z#=""!!%+-ing categories: 1) Why do so many choose to commute? ket segment who can bring on the volume necessary for systemic change in our local residential market? Will capturing a small percentage of these commuters through quality market-rate rentals drive a middle-income single-family building market? Are there incentives that need to be in place to entice developers to enter the market? What are our competitor communities doing to entice developers and are we competitive in that environment? What are the local constraints to devel-opment? What do other communities do? Who are the players on this issue? 2) Community Blight and Neighborhood Revitalization How do we address blighted properties to negate the impacts they have on the surrounding neighborhoods and tax base? We know there are programs to assist developers looking to rehabilitate and build new developments for low-income in-dividuals. What about those neighborhoods that, due to income restrictions, do not qualify for the low-income programs but are on the cusp of deterioration? Again, what have our neighbors in other towns done for neighborhood revitalization best practices? Read next month’s digest article as we will drill into these issues and questions as well as outline a number of programs related to marketing, revitalization, part-nerships, incentives, neighborhood revitalization and other initiatives that have been undertaken over the course of the last year.

! ," Marshall County res-idents now have a new tool to keep their commu-nities safe and help law enforcement solve crimes. On September 1, Marshall County Crime Stoppers Board launched its phone line and online service to solicit anonymous tips.Crime Stoppers is a nation-al organization that offers

cash rewards for information that helps lead to an arrest and conviction in a case. Until now, such a program did not exist in Marshall County. A volun-teer board of community members spent the past seven months working to make it a reality. “The emergence of this program in our area provides a clear pathway between those of us investigating crime and the individuals who have in-formation on criminal activity. It also allows citizens the means of working more directly with public safety as partner, when called upon. The Crime Stoppers program has proven its value all over the United States, and I’m #/!"!"!"! !%#"!"<"<%!safer places to live,” said Ted Kamatchus, Marshall County Sheriff. The board is operating the Crime Stoppers program with the full support of all law enforcement agencies in Marshall County. “We are fortunate to live in a community where there are so many peo-ple who care about public safety and want to help make our community a great place to live and work. The Crime Stoppers program is a great oppor-tunity to bring law enforcement and the community together for a common cause of reducing crime and arresting criminal offenders. This communi-ty-driven program will positively impact all of Marshall County now and moving forward into the future. Crime Stoppers will allow our community to proactively address criminal events and emphasize the importance of community partnerships to prevent crime. Through these partnerships we will realize a safer and stronger community,” said Michael Tupper, Mar-shalltown Police Chief. Now that the program is up and running, the board is working to secure funding to maintain its operation and to offer as cash rewards. Donations can be made to the following address: Marshall County Crime Stoppers, 112 W Church St., Marshalltown, IA 50158. Recently, the Chamber and Marshalltown Central Business District teamed up with Iowa State University for the Iowa State Retail Studio Project. The purpose of the project was twofold: to provide an opportu-nity for Iowa State students to apply their learning in a real-world setting through analyzing a store’s retail space and offer recommendations to en-hance it; and to assist local store owners to develop a vision for their store. Two groups of Iowa State students visited with Marshalltown retailers on Wedneday, August 26 to review the current status of the retail locations. The students then prepared recommendations for each retailer as to ways the store owner could improve the appearance of the store, make the store more welcoming, and also provided suggestions on product placement and displays. The students returned to Marshalltown on September 23 to present their recommendations. Participating retailers from Main Street and Marshalltown Mall includ-ed: 3rd Generation Upholstery, 7 Rayos Liquor Store, Black Tire Bike Company, Charmed by Kim, Denny’s Hometown Appliance, Golden Land Grocery, In Stitches, Liberty Gifts, Sports Page, Storia Bella, The Optical Center, Those Ink Guys, and Zamora’s Grocery. The project was made possible by a grant from the Marshalltown Development Foundation.
