Jim had an active role on the Central Maryland Conference/Monocacy Valley Athletic League reorganization committee and serves on the MVAL advisory board and scheduling committee. In Carroll County, Jim is also a member of the eligibility and the cheerleading committees. In addition, Jim has developed a coaching evaluation program. Jim has been a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association and the Maryland Association of Soccer Coaches. He was the MACS vice president from 1996-2000. At the state level he has been a member of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association soccer and track and field committees. Since the onset of his role as athletic director he has been an active member of the Maryland State Athletic Directors Association and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. He has served on the MSADA executive council since 2001 as an at large member and now as the District IB representative. He has been a host for the annual conference golf outing, and in 2006, was part of the round table discussion on “Simple and Inexpensive Ideas to Improve Contest Safety”. In 2003, Jim earned his Certified Athletic Administrator credential. He is a member of the state’s Leadership Training Program faculty and has taught LTC 501 on several occasions. In January of 2007, Jim completed the National Federation of State High Schools “Fundamentals of Coaching” course. A course he hopes to teach to Carroll County’s perspective coaches. Athletic Directors in Maryland’s Public and Private Secondary Schools
Jim Horn, CAAJim has served as the athletic director at South Carroll High School since 2000. Hetaught social studies from 1982 through 2004. When Carroll County instituted theposition of full time athletic administrator in 2004, Jim decided to end his tenure as ateacher and coach at the school and continue onward in his role as the athleticdirector. Before Jim entered into the field of athletic administration he was the varsitytrack coach (1983-1992), assistant girls basketball coach (1983-1989), JV girls soccercoach (1985-1986) and the varsity girls soccer coach (1987-2000).

The message by the membership of the MSADA for more professionaldevelopment and certification opportunities has been heard by the executivecouncil and was witnessed by the attendance at the LTC courses, workshops,CAA exam and other activities at the annual conference held recently in OceanCity. Maryland is one of the leading states in the nation with CMAA certifiedathletic administrators and the number of CAA and RAA certified individuals isgrowing by leaps and bounds throughout the state. As former MSADA presidentLee Dove, CAA, stated in a past newsletter, “Small in size but large in stature”best describes the role Maryland is playing not only in NIAAA Section 2 but at thenational level as well.
One need only look at the growth of the LTC faculty and the vast number ofcourses that can be taught by our own athletic administrators as proof that ourmembers are willing to get involved. The number of courses taken by ourmembers within our own state and at other locations proves that the LTC program
is important in helping athletic administrators do their jobs. Maryland is also fortunate to have so many talentedindividuals who serve on various LTC and standing committees at the national level. Attendance at the nationalconference by Maryland members surpasses many larger states and the quality of our newsletter produced threetimes a year is a tribute to Maryland.
The opportunities to improve your skills and knowledge can be seen by the full week of professional developmentthat is available this July. We hope all members take advantage of the Summer Institute, New AD Seminar, CAAExam, Field and Turf Seminar and the Circle System Equipment Tour that is offered this summer. It is vital to getinput from our members on future ideas for workshops and seminars that our membership believes would benefitus in doing our jobs. We encourage not only athletic administrators but assistant athletic directors and coachesto attend these activities.
In June, Maryland will host the Section 2 summer meeting and the MSADA welcomes the challenge to host avariety of activities for the delegates and showcase the many great attractions found in Maryland. A great deal ofplanning and help is required and members are encouraged to contact their representative to see what they cando to help make this meeting and conference successful. Such activities will include:

As the outgoing President of the MSADA I wanted tothank Carol Satterwhite, our Executive Director, theentire Executive Council, and the membership of theMSADA. This year’s annual conference in Ocean Citywas once again offered in a very professional andinformative manner, and by all accounts, a good timewas had by all.
The scheduled workshops and LTC classes allowedfor continued professional growth and developmentopportunities. The vendor exhibitions provided an amplearray of goods and services available for consideration.Coach Joe Krivak, the banquet speaker, offered a veryreal scenario of a then and now comparison as itpertains to today’s athletic realm. Kim Chorosiewski, aformer AD here in Maryland and currently an athleticadministrator in New England, addressed the closingbreakfast gathering with a discussion of personalchallenge and commitment as it relates to herexperiences as the Head Coach for the Scottish NationalWomen’s Lacrosse team.
As a group we also had the opportunity to listen to theExecutive Directors from the MPSSAA (Ned Sparks),MIAA (Rick Diggs), and IAAM (Sue Thompson) as wellas the Secretary from the NIAAA (Holly Farnese). Eachof these individuals addressed the current news of noteas representatives for these various athleticorganizations.
We honored our local and state award recipients foroutstanding leadership and contributions as DistrictAD’s, as Distinguished Service recipients and as newlyinducted Hall of Fame Members. Congratulations to allfor a job well done.
In addition, this year’s conference afforded themembership to take part in an active election for theposition of Executive Council 2nd Vice President. DerekMaki (Kenwood High School) and Jeff Rose (CharlesE. Smith Jewish Day School) were our candidates forthe position. Derek Maki will serve the next two yearsas the new 2nd V.P. and Jeff Rose will assume an atlarge position with the Executive Council. Thank you toall the members who voted in this election.
As the MSADA continues to grow, develop and matureas an organization, it is my hope that the memberschools will play an active and supportive role to the
Executive Council, by continuing to make professionaldevelopment a priority, state and national dualmembership a shared objective, and personal challengeas athletic administrators an individual goal.
We do what we do for the young lives we influence.May that influence always be positive, well founded andpurposeful in the name of high school athletics.Leadership, Integrity and Character are traits all athleticdirectors should strive to achieve. Maryland is lucky tohave a professional membership who shares in thatbelief.
Thank you for attending and participating in the 2007annual conference. President Elect Karl Heimbach(Magruder High School) will ensure that next year’sconference will again be one of the best in the country.
The 31st annual MSADA conference was a greatsuccess!
Over 130 athletic directors attended the event. Theyparticipated in workshops, LTC courses, visited thevendors hall. A number of brave people even played golfin the fog! Throughout the conference, our MSADAmembers had the opportunity to visit with old friendsand make new ones.
Sixty vendors participated in the conference. Thevendors offered our MSADA athletic directors a varietyof products and services related to high school athletics.The vendors generously contributed over 50 items forour annual raffle. The feedback we received from thevendors about our conference was very positive. Inparticular, many people liked the improved traffic flowof the vendors’ hall.
We want to thank all of the vendors for their time andinterest in our conference. The cooperative relationshipof the vendors and the MSADA is critical. Ourrelationship is a win-win situation that we greatlyappreciate.
Our conference was also a success because of theworkshop speakers and presiders. We offered sixworkshops which covered various and important issues.We want to thank the volunteer speakers for presentingsuch interesting workshops.
As always, the LTC classes provided our members withthe opportunity for professional development. Theclasses were well received and very informative. As thescope of the athletic administrator’s responsibilities getswider, the value of the LTC courses increases.

� The NIAAA has leased an office suite on the northside of Indianapolis for the home of the NIAAA offices.This is a significant step in the evolution of the NIAAAand signifies the growth and development of theorganization. District 2BCongratulations to our award winners at the 2007 MSADAConference. Duke Beattie, Director of System-wide Athleticsin Montgomery County received a NIAAA 20 year Certificate ofMerit. He, also, received the MSADA District 2B Award ofAppreciation. Jeff Sullivan, Athletic Director at Paint BranchHigh School, received the District 2B Athletic Director of theYear Award and Mike Lanahan, who retired from QuinceOrchard High School in January 2007, was inducted into theMSADA Hall of Fame. In addition, we have two other athleticdirectors retiring this spring; Paul Kane from GaithersburgHigh School and Dave Magathan from Walt Whitman HighSchool. District 2B would like to congratulate all three ADs ontheir retirement.
District 3Earl Hawkins is now the Director of Interscholastic Athleticsin Prince George’s County and O’Shay Watson, who was theathletic director at Parkdale, is now the Supervisor ofInterscholastic Athletics. The Eleanor Roosevelt girls track team made history at the2007 Penn Relays. The Lady Raiders won two “Championshipof America” relays. A feat no other American school, boys orgirls, had ever accomplished. The girls ran the 4x800 metersin a time of 8:51.19 (second fastest time in the Penn Relayshistory) and the 4x400 meter relay in a time of 3:39.44.
District 6Congratulations to Ron Belinko, CMAA, Athletic Coordinatorfor Baltimore County Public Schools. He received the veryprestigious NIAAA State Award of Merit. Ron was recognizedfor his outstanding leadership as an athletic administrator. Hewas also honored for his continued commitment to excellencein athletics not only in Baltimore County but on the nationallevel as well. Jill Myers, CAA Franklin High School, receivedthe NIAAA Certificate of Merit for her 20 years of service withthe NIAAA and MSADA. Jane Rones, CAA, from PikesvilleHigh School was selected as the District 6 Athletic Director ofthe Year. Derek Maki, CMAA Kenwood High School was votedin as 2nd Vice President for the MSADA.

Towson, presented a workshop onhow to organize an athleticbanquet. Reggie Brooks, CAA,New Town and Joe Sargent,Milford Mill kept the party going until early in the morning byhosting the fabulous hospitality room. Baltimore County willsay goodbye to three of its finest this June. Lori Powell isstepping down at Patapsco High. Lori will continue to coachat the school. Jane Rones, CAA, at Pikesville will retire atthe end of the school year and Jill Myers, CAA, Franklin HighSchool will retire after a stellar career as teacher, coach, athleticdirector and friend to all, after many years of dedicated serviceto the folks in Reisterstown and across the State.
District 8The Bayside Conference had its 7th Annual Senior Scholar -Athlete Banquet on May 7, 2007. The award criteria is a maleand female scholar-athlete selected from each of the 18 BaysideConference member schools. The recipients must havemaintained a minimum of a 3.25 grade point average throughtheir last report card; have no failing grade on their transcriptthrough out their high school career and they must haveparticipated in a minimum of two sports in their senior year.
The Bayside Conference will host the 2007-08 BaysideChampionships at Washington College on their new artificialturf fields. The conference will play their championship gamesin the following sports: field hockey, boys and girls soccer, andboys and girls lacrosse. We are very excited about having theopportunity to use this fantastic facility.

Thank you to Mary Ella Marion from Mercy High School whohas served as the IAAM president and vice president for thepast seven years. Retired AD’sEight retired athletic directors attended this year’s conferencein Ocean City in April. We were all shocked at the recent video of a father of a six-year-old wrestler who stormed onto the mat to tossanother six-year-old wrestler off his son. Or the story of an ice hockey parent who punched an official for notmaking the correct call against his son’s team. Or, how during a 65-lb. Pop Warner football game, a father walkedonto the field, leveled an official, and then instigated a full riot of parents while two teams of frightened kids lookedon.
We can go on and on with examples of such stories. Each of us, as sports administrators, are always on ourtoes, vigilant for signs that an incident like one of these might happen at our own home games. These uglyincidents can occur in all sports in any school in the country. They cross both genders and all socio-economiclevels. There seems to be no escaping this frightening and disheartening trend.
And yet, most simply, what we are lacking is common sportsmanship. Has the Golden Rule, “Do unto others asyou would have them do unto you” disappeared from society? The once held belief that participating in sportsbuilds solid citizens seems to be vanishing from our recreation leagues and our schools. Why do so manyconsistently challenge the decisions of officials? Why is it no longer a satisfactory accomplishment for a team tohave a winning, successful season, but instead a battle ground for parents as they frequently complain aboutinsufficient playing time for their son or daughter?
While we may not know the answers to these questions, we feel that the key to regaining good sportsmanship inour schools is through education, modeling, and maintenance of the highest expectations for all involved. Thisstarts, of course, with us, as the leaders of our athletic communities.
As sports administrators, we need to model and maintain the highest sportsmanship expectations for our coaches,students, parents, families and fans. There are several ways to do this. First, at school functions such as “Back-To-School Night,” you and/or your principal can share expectations of good sportsmanship. These expectationsshould also be presented in writing and disseminated to your community, via articles in your school and localnewspapers, conversations with radio announcers, and video clips on local TV stations. Ask your principal to talkabout these expectations at your pep rallies and school-wide assemblies. Constantly work hard to be sure yoursportsmanship expectations remain in prominent locations in your school community, taking advantage of yourschool web page, your local grocery store, and your local pizza hang-out. Good sportsmanship will evolve andimprove with a concerted effort on the part of the school leaders to communicate it as a high priority for yourathletic community.
With all of that said, your most diligent efforts will likely fail unless your coaches buy into and support this concept.Since a coach is the most scrutinized person during a game, he or she can be a positive and highly effective rolemodel, as the assistant coaches, players, parents, fans and families will frequently emulate the head coach. Asthe leader of the athletic community in your school, it is your responsibility to emphasize to your coaches thatwinning is important, but doing it with class, poise, and fairness is imperative.
Students and parents need to be taught what sportsmanship expectations are desired. They need to be giventhese goals and standards early in the process. Students and parents alike should be given handouts at all pre-season meetings where the expectations are in writing, and are discussed at length. Coaches need to reinforcethese items whenever they can. Public address announcers should also read sportsmanship expectationsbefore each game.
Repetition is the key if we expect our community to listen to us. We continue to see on TV, ESPN, video, sportsbroadcasts, arguments with officials and taunting and unacceptable behavior over and over again. We need to

consistently emphasize the positive side of sports as well. Our society seems to have adopted certainunsportsmanlike behaviors that would not have been tolerated just a decade or two ago. Think back to your youthand ask yourself whether your own parents would have taken your side over that of your teacher or a coach in adisagreement. I am sure that not many of you would have answered affirmatively. Can we turn this around? Notovernight, but it can be done. We need to expect better behavior and believe that it will happen. Through this, itcan be achieved. By not accepting bullish behavior as educators and sports administrators, we can make adifference in a very positive way.
Below is a list of expectations that we use at Springbrook High School. It has been modified with permission froma similar posting on the Walt Whitman High School athletic web page.
Expectations of Athletes1. Treat opponents with respect.2. Respect the judgment of contest officials.3. Abide by the rules of the event.4. Display no behavior that could incite fans.5. Cooperate with officials, coaches and participants to conduct a fair contest.6. Accept seriously the responsibility of representing the school and community.7. Display positive behavior in public at all times.8. Live up to the high standards of sportsmanship established by the coach.
Expectations of Parents, Students & Other Fans1. Realize that spectators represent the school just as the members of the team and, therefore, have an
obligation to demonstrate good sportsmanship and encourage good sportsmanship in others.2. Recognize that good sportsmanship is more important than victory by approving and applauding good
team play, individual skill and outstanding examples of sportsmanship exhibited by either team.3. Recognize that, since the primary purpose of interscholastic athletics is to promote the physical, social
and emotional well being of players through the medium of contest, victory or defeat is of secondaryimportance.
4. Treat visiting teams and officials as guests, extending to them every courtesy.Expectations of Coaches
1. Always set a good example for participants and fans to follow.2. Instruct participants in proper sportsmanship responsibilities and demand that they make sportsmanship
and ethics the #1 priority.3. Respect the judgment of contest officials, abide by the rules of the event and display no behavior that could
incite fans.4. Treat opposing coaches, directors, participants and fans with respect. Shake hands with officials and the
opposing coaches in public.5. Develop and enforce penalties for participants who do not abide by sportsmanship standards.

Margaret A. Hedges, former athletic director at Albert Einstein High School, passed away on March 10, 2007. Herhusband and three sons, her parents and two brothers survive her.
Winfred Edward Lakes, 82, died March 30, 2007. Ed had a long and honored career as a teacher and coach, highschool principal and supervisor of physical education and health in the Charles County School System. Ed was one of thefounders of the MSADA and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984. He is survived by his wife, two sons, twodaughters and four grandchildren.
