IN WHAT is believed to be a first in the history of the Northern Terri- tory, the Katherine Anzac Day march will showcase a banner for Aborigi- nal and Torres Strait Islanders who fought in the wars of the 20th century or who are currently serving their country. Ellen Gough, Chairperson for the Katherine Stolen Generation Aborig- inal Corporation said the Corporation had created the Anzac Banner for the annual march on April 25. “There has never been a banner in the Anzac March here in Katherine for Indigenous people who fought in the wars or for the serving members and their families,” Ms Gough said. “There were about 400 to 500 people of Aboriginal heritage who fought in the First World War, and in recognition of those who served our country at Gallipoli and in wars and conflicts throughout the century, we will be marching with the new banner,” she said. Ms Gough said throughout the wars Aboriginal people “never re- ceived recognition or the same enti- tlements”, which is why she is now rallying to give those who served their country- the unsung heroes - the recognition and support they deserve. Ms Gough said she would like to encourage descendants of those who fought for their country, to march be- hind the ‘Unsung Heroes’ banner this Anzac Day. The RSL has officially approved of the new Anzac Day banner.
