L. Summary of my Activities and Future Plans
My academic drive and work originate out of my professional identity as an art
therapist, a profession, which is in its beginning stage of development. 18 years of
variant art therapy work with individuals, dyads, and groups in different settings had
given me a wide spectrum in regards to art therapy in clinical and theoretical levels. I
see a special importance to stay in touch with the clinical domain, as it enriches and
keeps it as a living essence in myself, in my endeavor to teach art therapy students. I’m
also keep creating art, and the writing and illustrating children books.
Currently I am involved in five research domains, and one art project:
1. The study of art-based assessments tools, as unique methods for art-therapists in
evaluating the client's strengths and difficulties, mostly during the first stage of
therapy. I had developed a quantitative rating system for scoring PPAT (Person
Picking an Apple , Gantt, 1990), the Symbolic Content of PPAT, and validated it
within two research projects in Israel [n=126 (D5, D6), N=215 (D7, D9)], and
within two research projects in Crete [N=800, N=120]). My collaboration with
professionals from the University of Crete is an active and fruitful. Our rating
system captures quantitatively the visual narrative, and thus contributes to the study
of projective drawings. I also analyses PPAT drawings of clinical samples with
qualitative methods as well (K4).
2. Together with Dr. Zilcha-Mano we developed a self reported questionnaire
measuring the art therapy working alliance. This year we have been conducting a
research for measuring the main factors in this innovating concept (K2).
3. The study of professional development of art therapist in Israel: A pioneer study
was conducted about the professional development of Israeli art therapists, and in
specific, their personal therapy, and preference of a theoretical model (K5). For this
project we have developed specific self-questionnaires.
4. For the contribution to the parental representations and mentalization, the study of
clay parent-child method included also fathers (K3) and mothers to Autistic
children. In these projects our efforts are to deepen the theory and art therapy
practice in this domain.
5. Finally, due to my former experience in working in group-therapy of bereaved
parents, and group-therapy for widows and orphans, in the Israeli Ministry of
Defense, I have started to explore the therapeutic qualities of art for people who
experienced the loss of a loved one by qualitative methods. By interviewing art
20
therapists that work with the bereaved, we hope to gain insights about the dynamics
of art therapy with this population.
As a teacher that continue to be involved in art therapy research, by developing art
therapy research tools, I also invite my students to be involved in research projects. I
believe that they may be contributed by their developing expertise to analyze drawings
from different research methods (as visual narratives, from phenomenological
perspectives, hermeneutics, qualitative and mix methods as well). The nurturing of the
attitude that clinical and research fields are complementary, and enriching our
knowledge, is one of my foundational goals in teaching. I see each art therapist as a
researcher of herself and of the therapeutic process. A critical perspective is
encouraged, facing and recognizing our methodological limitations in practice and
research as well.
Social Action in Art:
The next children book that is a bout to publish, deals with the Jewish-
Palestinian conflict, by bringing together the two narratives of the two people in our
country. My hope is that art may serve as a bridge for recognition, for acknowledging
the “other”, and for voicing muted pain in our society, that had been expressed through
violence.
I submitted an action-research proposal for the New Israel Foundation, on 19
Nov.
